K'tivah v'Chatimah Tovah SHUL DECORUM REMINDER At YIEB we encourage talking to everyone: HASHEM during Davening. FRIENDS during Kiddush. ______________________________________ RABBI’s CORNER / SHOFTIM 5773 Dear YIEB Families, This week we embarked upon the month of Elul. This time of year, leading up to Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, is an opportunity to focus on Tefilla as a core vehicle in which we maintain our relationship with Hashem which is ideally expressed through davening in a shul. Therefore, in anticipation of the High Holidays, I’d like to make the following suggestions to help us prepare for the Yamim Noraim: 1. Increase participation. Consider coming to shul more often over the next month. Whether it be during the week, Friday night or Shabbat afternoon, the more we attend shul, the more we’ll connect to Hashem through Tefilla. Additionally, when we come on Shabbat morning, let’s show up on time. (FYI- we begin at 9:00 AM.) 2. Increase understanding. The only way Tefilla can be more meaningful is if we understand what we are saying and why we’re saying it. Now’s the time to learn about the various prayers we say both on a daily/weekly basis and in preparation for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. There are many books, websites and other resources that can help us get a deeper understanding of our Siddur and Machzor. If I can be helpful in providing more resources, please feel free to be in touch. As we approach Rosh Hashana, I will be teaching about the Machzor during the Shabbat afternoon class. 3. Increase decorum. When we come to shul and walk into the sanctuary, we have to realize that we are there for a meaningful purpose. (Of course, there’s always ample time to socialize during the Kiddush.) In order to stay true to our mission for ourselves and for those around us, we have to leave all external distractions and conversations outside the sanctuary. Together, I hope we can accept upon ourselves the spiritual opportunities that the month of Elul has to offer us, in particular to take full advantage of the Tefilla experience. If we put forth the effort, then we can elevate ourselves and go into the High Holidays ready to maximize our relationship with Hashem. Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Jay Weinstein ------------------------------------------------------------- UPCOMING BOARD MEETING Tuesday August 20th at 8:45 PM --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jay Weinstein, Rabbi 732.354.5912 (cell) 732.254.1860 x2 (office) Elliot Denenberg, Editor Aron Adams, President Yaakov Wasser, Inaugural Rabbi (1979-2009), Retired
