BEGINNING WITHOUT A VOICE BEGINNING WITHOUT A VOICE BEGINNING WITHOUT A VOICE BEGINNING WITHOUT A VOICE

On Wednesday, a participant in Simchat Torah at Shaarei Shomayim returned to work. His colleagues commented upon his hoarse attempt to speak, “We wish we could party so hard that we would lose our voices.” So much happens before we read Bereshit. On some level, we always begin the Torah having lost our voice. We read Bereshit in light of V’zot Habracha. We read the beginning with the end in mind. We read Bereshit knowing of its importance to our grandparents and teachers. We read Bereshit having danced like crazy on Simchat Torah. We read Bereshit knowing that Rashi read it before us:

IN THE BEGINNING GOD CREATED — This verse cries out for explanation…

What’s bothering Rashi? Everything! “In the beginning” of WHAT? Where does this verse come from? Where does the Torah come from? Why are we reading the Torah? Why do we read anything? Why are we here? It is not simply this verse, which says, “Explain me!” Everything cries ”!Make sense of me“ -ָּדְרֵׁשִני

Our Rabbis explained it: God created the world for the sake of the Torah, which is called (Mishlei 8:22)“The beginning (ראשית) of His (God’s) way,” and for the sake of Israel who are called (Yirmiyah 2:3) “The beginning (ראשית) of His (God’s) increase.”

Teleology is the philosophical explanation of phenomena in terms of the purpose they serve rather than in terms of the cause by which they arise. Rashi takes creation from the past into the future. Rather than explaining what was, Rashi interprets Bereshit to express what should be. From its outset, the Torah comes to answer what is the purpose of creation. God created the world to serve God’s plan as embodied in the Torah and implemented by the Jewish people. This is core Jewish theology. This is the ultimate דרשה– explanation (and sermon).

In a world still filled with sorrow and suQering, we turn to the Torah and discover hope and purpose. We expressed this idea during our prayers at Neila:

The holy city [Yerushalayim] and its environs have become disgraced and plundered, and all its treasures lay buried and hidden, and nothings remains except is this Torah. Restore the captivity of the tents of Yaakov and deliver us for the sake of your name.

Through the Torah, God ultimately restores our captivity and delivers us. The Torah gives us back our voice.
