Student Government of

Olympic College(SGOC)

*Formerly ASOC*

A NAME CHANGE IN THE MAKING… ASOC will

now be known as Student Government of Olympic

College, or SGOC! This change has come about for

several reasons, the biggest being that when asked, most

OC students were not aware that there was a student

government organization here on campus. All students are

members of the Associated Students of Olympic College,

thus when the student government was referred to as

ASOC, it was not clear exactly who was being

represented, students or student government leaders? The

SGOC is excited about the name change and will continue

to represent the students of OC to the best of their

ability. Keep an eye out for our new logo coming soon!

STUDENT ELECTIONS - Elections for next year’s

student officers are coming soon. If you or anyone you

know is interested in student government, please stop by

the SGOC Office in BSC 118 to pick up an information

packet! And as a plus, Student Government positions are

regular student employees, so it is a paid position.

On February 19, the Student Liaison Mentors

and mentees went to the SeeFilm movie

theater for a lunch and movie event. To

celebrate Black History month, they were

able to watch the movie ‘Race’, which was

based on the true story of Jesse Owens, a

famous track star who defeated all the racial

odds against him and won 4 gold medals at

the 1936 Olympics. Everyone enjoyed the

event and

gave great

feedback

about how

much they

have learned

about the

times when

Black/African

American

people had

zero equality.

on the concept of solidarity through hip hop. She commanded

the BSC North & South Conference room with her powerful

voice and resonating message. At one point, audience members

were invited onstage to freestyle with her! The show ended with

caused an

“What’s Next?” Transition Tours

On Tuesday, March 1,

2016, various students

that volunteer with

Multicultural & Student

Programs participated

in assisting with

campus tours for high

school students

around Kitsap County

that would like to transition into college (and ideally, Olympic

College!). Student volunteers were very excited for a chance to

connect with future college students and assist with the process

of knowing what’s available for them on campus. A couple of our

volunteers prepped for the tour the day before by reviewing an

OC campus script to be more knowledgeable of the buildings as

well as did a “mock campus tour” to plan their routes. When the

tours were completed, MSP volunteers ranted and raved about

their experiences with the students and anticipate the next

campus tour they can assist with. –MSP Staff

On March 22 & 23, the OC Shelton Campus, under the direction

of Teresa McDermott and Faviola Barbosa, held the first annual

Latino Student Success Day. Students from Oakland Bay Jr. High,

Choice High, and Shelton High School were able to spend the

day learning about college, especially Olympic College. They

were treated to discussions about goal setting, how to apply to

college, scholarships that are available, played games, ate some

great food, and were able to see how accessible the OC campus

was. –SGOC Staff
