Spring Green and the River Valley area are special. Somehow this land escaped the last great Ice Age, as well as the one before that. What you see here, and nowhere else in the Upper Midwest, is a landscape sculpted at least a half million years earlier than anything else around it. The results are breathtaking: rolling hills and bluffs that overlook the Wisconsin River Valley, and a setting infused with ageless beauty.

Spring Green was founded in 1857 by Welsh, English, Norwegian and German immigrants whose industries were dairy and produce farms, lumbering and cheese production. Today, agriculture remains integral to the area economy and its residents.

Another tradition has grown on this land as well: a dynamic and spirited arts scene. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin, American Players Theatre and The House on the Rock collectively attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. A host of artists, musicians and craftspeople who live and work in the River Valley add to the experience.

But what makes the River Valley stand out is an infectious sense of community. The residents of this area are dedicated to helping their neighbors and welcoming visitors. We hope you will feel welcome and become part of the River Valley community whether you’re visiting for a day or staying here permanently.

SPRING GREEN is situated in south central Wisconsin, 40 miles due west of the state’s capital city of Madison. It’s a short, scenic drive from Dubuque, Baraboo, Galena and many other destination cities.

The House On The Rock began in 1945 when a man named Alex Jordan had a towering goal: to build a retreat as awe-inspiring as the view from the rock upon which the House would eventually be built.

What took shape on and around Deer Shelter Rock is a truly remarkable achievement. The House was only the beginning. In the years that followed, Alex expanded his vision beyond the House and collected and built on a massive scale. In the end he had created the world-renowned attraction known as The House on the Rock.

o n E m a n ’ S D r E a mGeologists say this lush green valley was once covered by a huge ocean. The waters eroded the stone and left craggy rock formations towering over the valley floor. Alex first spied one such unusual outcropping of rock called Deer Shelter Rock, which by then had become a popular picnic spot, on a family outing when he was a boy. By the early 1940s he was already dreaming of building a house there.

And so began his life-long endeavor. At first he built what he called a “shack”, but tore it down because he was not satisfied. He then rebuilt and called his creation “The Winter Room,” which he used as a private retreat to pursue his interests in music,

books and sculpture. In the years that followed, he added more rooms – thirteen in all by the early 1960s. Alex never drew up any plans for the House but built directly from the ideas in his head. He was not afraid to tear down, backtrack and re-build if things were not to his liking.

Jordan’s grand project began attracting attention from friends and passersby. As the number of sightseers increased, he built a staircase for them – now a 375-foot ramp through the tree tops.

In 1960, he bowed to the inevitable and opened The House on the Rock to the public, charging fifty cents for admission. The revenue was immediately reinvested in expanding the scope of his dream. What started as a simple “shack,” a sculptor’s retreat, continues to charm and fascinate thousands of visitors from around the world.

p l a n t o v I S I t S o o nSince those early days, the world Alex Jordan created has grown far beyond the original house and into an attraction with many buildings, exhibits and collections. During the regular season, the attraction has three sections. If you are not able to visit all three sections in one day, you may return to see the remaining sections, or purchase a ticket for only one section.

In Section One, you’ll visit the foundation of Alex Jordan’s vision – the architecture and magnificent structures of the Original House and the Gate House. Section One also includes the Infinity Room, the Alex Jordan Center, the Japanese Garden, the Asian Garden and the Container Gardens and Pavilion.

Section Two moves from the unique architecture of the House to the imaginative contents and creations of Jordan’s vision, including the Mill House, Streets of Yesterday, The Heritage of the Sea, Tribute to Nostalgia, Music of Yesterday, Spirit of Aviation, and The Carousel.

Section Three focuses on Alex Jordan’s varied and eclectic collections that range from the miniature to the magnificent: the Carousel, the Organ Room, Inspiration Point, The Doll House Room, The Circus Room, The Galleries and The Doll Carousel Room.

The regular season runs from March 14 to November 10, 2013, and all three sections are open.

At Christmastime, the House on the Rock is transformed with the splendor and joy of the holiday season. Santa takes up residence in a big way! As you stroll through the shortened tour of exhibits, you’ll be greeted by more than 6,000 collectible Santas of all sizes and types – large, small, fancy and homespun. Christmas at The House on the Rock runs from November 14, 2013 to January 5, 2014.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin Estate is truly among the world’s treasures. His home, surrounded by 600 acres of rolling hills in southwestern Wisconsin, traces not only Wright’s long and fruitful career, but ranks as one of the most thorough explorations of Organic Architecture.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center is your gateway to all things Frank Lloyd Wright. Overlooking the scenic Wisconsin River is a Wright-designed building where you can purchase a tour, shop for the perfect gift, or enjoy a meal, all while taking in the picturesque view through windows which sweep the entire building. No amount of study, reading or web surfing can substitute for an in-person visit to Taliesin. Here you’ll breathe the fresh country air of Wright’s Wisconsin home, take in nature’s magnificent panorama, and trace the arc of Frank Lloyd Wright’s creative vision.

Taliesin offers a variety of tours to fit each visitor’s level of interest and familiarity:

Hillside Studio and Theater TourWright designed Hillside in 1902 for his aunts, who ran an innovative children’s boarding school based on the motto “learn by doing.” Wright’s building, as innovative as the school it housed, is situated on land cleared by his pioneering grandparents. After his aunts retired, Wright re-opened their building and expanded it to accommodate a community of architects and designers ... a community that continues to live and work at Hillside to this day. Highlights of

this tour include the charming, light-filled Assembly Hall, the dramatic 5,000-square-foot Drafting Studio, the Romeo and Juliet Windmill Tower, and the jewel-like Theater.

Taliesin House TourThe House Tour guides you through rooms that Wright imagined and built, exploring the rich canvas he worked on every day of his life. You’ll experience the landscaped grounds, furnishings, collected objects and, of course, the building itself. From the Taliesin courtyards and gardens, you are afforded a commanding view of the beautiful valley settled by Wright’s ancestors, while the interior portion of the tour explores Taliesin’s famed living room, the garden room, loggia, bedroom, and studio.

Highlights TourThe Highlights Tour is a way to experience the interiors of two significant, yet distinctly different Wright-designed buildings, Hillside and Taliesin. Created for the Wright enthusiast and the casual visitor, the Highlights Tour couples the history and masterful design of two architectural landmarks into one quick-paced two-hour tour. Included is a drive through the scenic Taliesin grounds past Midway Farm, Taliesin’s former farming complex.

Estate TourThe tour begins at the Frank Lloyd Wright® Visitor Center, the only free-standing restaurant designed by Wright. From there, the tour moves to Unity Chapel, built for Wright’s maternal family, where Wright’s gravesite is located. Next, the tour takes you to Hillside, the school that Wright designed for his aunts. At Hillside, you’ll explore the Assembly Hall, Fellowship Dining Room, Drafting Studio, the Theater and gallery space. A country walk takes you past the Romeo and Juliet Windmill Tower, the oldest design on the estate. Next, you’ll get a close-up look at Tan-y-deri, the home Wright built for his sister Jane Porter, and Midway Barns en route to the house itself. Two hours into the tour, you’ll be served light refreshments on Mr. Wright’s Terrace before enjoying an exterior tour of his home. Finally, you’ll spend a delightful hour inside Taliesin. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for this tour, since it includes a mile-and-a-half hike from one end of the estate to the other, with few places to sit down.

The Spring Green area is a treasure trove of architecture designed or influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright. Besides the buildings designed by Wright himself, the River Valley features many structures by Wright’s former associates and apprentices.

*1. Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1953): Originally designed as a restaurant. Tours of the Taliesin estate begin here.

2. Unity Chapel (J.L. Silsbee, 1886): The Lloyd Jones family chapel. Silsbee’s apprentice, Frank Lloyd Wright, did the interior delineations.

3. Aldebaran Farm was the ancestral home of Wright’s Uncle James, later modified by William Wesley Peters. Call 773-334-4924 for lodging reservations.

4. Wintergreen (Paul Wagner, with original concept developed by W.W. Peters, 1989): A conference center with majestic 360-degree views on a hilltop.

*5. Wyoming Valley Grammar School (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1956): This

two-room public elementary school was in large part donated by Wright as a memorial to his mother.

*6. Scenic Overlook Pedestrian Bridge (James Charles Montooth, 1992): A bridge over Highway 23, it offers a great view of the House on the Rock’s Infinity Room.

*7. The House on the Rock Resort (James Charles Montooth, 1989 with

addition, E. Thomas Casey, 1992): Hotel and resort. *8. Spring Valley Inn (Joseph Fabris, 1988): Reception area, bar and inn. *9. Usonian Inn, (J.C. Caraway, 1948): An 11-unit motel on 3 beautiful acres. *10. St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church (William Wesley Peters,

1989): The church features 8” x 18” leaded glass altar windows designed by Susan Jacobs Lockhart.

*11. Spring Green Area Chamber of Commerce (William Wesley Peters,

1975): Originally a drive-up bank facility, it is now the Chamber of Commerce Office.

*12. BMO Harris Bank (William Wesley Peters, 1970). *13. Riteway Plaza (James Charles Montooth, 1995): Originally a Phillips

Located on 110 rolling, wooded acres four miles south of Spring Green, American Players Theatre is one of the most popular outdoor classical theater companies in the nation, with an audience numbering over 100,000 each season. Shakespeare is the foundation of APT’s repertoire, with other classics filling out the balance of the season.

The 1148-seat mainstage theater is nestled in a natural acoustical bowl outdoors under the stars. The atmosphere at APT is informal; patrons picnic on the grounds before the show then make their way up the winding path to the theater at the top of the hill. A shuttle bus is available for those who prefer to ride. The Touchstone, APT’s 200-seat indoor theatre complements the outdoor experience with plays more suited to an intimate, indoor setting.

The 2013 season Up the Hill includes Shakespeare’s The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Hamlet; Too Many Husbands by W. Somerset Maugham, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard and All My Sons by Arthur Miller. The Touchstone Theatre features Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra (adapted by Kate

Buckley and James DeVita), Molly Sweeney by Brian Friel and Dickens in America, from his Works and Words by James DeVita.

Drawing from the artistic resources of the River Valley area and nearby environs, the summer series is augmented by RMF’s seasonal concerts, performances and educational workshops held in other local

The White Church THEATRE ProjectNestled in the Wyoming Valley, just south of Spring Green, sits a 1902 Methodist church now the residency of the London-based Theatre de l’Ange Fou and International School of Corporeal Mime. Led by directors Steven Wasson and Corinne Soum, the Theatre has created many original plays and adaptations, ranging from duets to large ensemble work. The annual event transforms the town’s main thoroughfare with block after block of arts and crafts of all mediums. There are many wonderful bike routes in the Spring Green area. A marked bike lane runs all the way from Hillside School (just south of the Wisconsin River on Hwy. 23) to Dodgeville, and the Military Ridge Bike Trail is also accessible from Spring Green by following Hwy. 23 south to County Hwy. Z.

The Pine River Bike Trail, between Lone Rock and Richland Center, is laid on an abandoned rail bed. The trail gives riders the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful river bluffs without riding over them. Parking and access is available in Lone Rock, Gotham and Richland Center. The trail is free and open to the public; motorized vehicles are not allowed. For more information, call (608)647-6205.

H I K I N GFrom state parks to nature preserves, the Spring Green area offers hikes through the woods, prairies and wetlands where you’ll witness all types of flora and fauna. The following are a few places to begin:

av o c a p r a I r I EFor wildflower and native plant enthusiasts, and for those who like their recreation on the wild side, an outing to this 970-acre wet-mesic prairie is highly recommended. Located in the Avoca Unit of the Riverway, seven miles west of the Lone Rock bridge on Hwy. 133, the Avoca Prairie is the largest tall grass prairie east of the Mississippi. It is probably the only place in the eastern U.S. where, no matter where you stand, you only see natural prairie-savanna features. We recommend that you check in with the ranger station at Tower Hill State Park before heading out to the prairie.

F E r r y b l U F FLocated off Highway 60, four miles southwest of Sauk City, Ferry Bluff has a spectacular and historical view of the river and surrounding topography. To the north and east you can see the Baraboo Hills, containing some of the oldest rock in North America. On a clear day you can spot the highest point in southern Wisconsin, Blue Mounds, thirteen miles to the south.

Ferry Bluff is a spring nesting site for Cooper’s Hawks. Winter visits are not allowed, however good winter viewing of Ferry Bluff is possible from Conservation Road just northwest of Mazomanie.

S p r I n G G r E E n p r E S E r v ELocated off Jones Road, two miles from Spring Green, the Spring Green Preserve has been called the “Wisconsin Desert,” with a variety of cacti, sand dunes and dry grasses. It is an area where forest meets bluff and bluff levels off into plains and dunes. The preserve’s self-guided trail allows you to learn as you go. At the trailhead, you will find a pamphlet containing information corresponding to each of a series of numbered markers along the trail.

Saint Anne’s Chapel, built a half century ago on top of the high, wooded hill west of the present day St. Luke’s Church in Plain, is open at all times. A strenuous climb takes you past the 14 stations of the Way of the Cross leading from St. Luke’s through the cemetery and winding up the hill to the chapel. A short distance down the hill from St. Anne’s Chapel is a replica of the Lourdes Grotto. There are benches along the path to allow for breaks.

t h E l o W E r W I S c o n S I n r I v E rTraveling on the Lower Wisconsin River near Spring Green is ideal for those who like to take in the sights at a leisurely pace. River currents range from three to five miles per hour upstream of Spring Green and only one to two miles per hour downstream. There are no rapids, falls or portages along the entire 92.3 miles. Two-thirds of river-users are on the 25-mile stretch between Prairie du Sac and Spring Green. There are numerous canoe landings in the River Valley area, including those at Tower Hill State Park, Peck’s Landing, Lone Rock (just east of the Hwy. 130 bridge) and Arena (South Bank).

F I S h I n GBoth the main channel and backwaters of the Wisconsin River offer great fishing. In the main channel you’ll find walleye, auger, catfish, smallmouth bass and northern pike, among others. In the sloughs and bayous, there are bluegill, bullhead, crappie and largemouth bass. There is also good fishing to be had on area streams and lakes. h U n t I n GThere are several public hunting grounds and private hunt clubs in the Spring Green area. In the autumn, many hunters travel to the area for deer hunting, but other game includes coyote, wild turkey, quail, pheasant, and more. For specific areas and hunting/trapping seasons, see the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website at dnr.wi.gov.

St. Luke’s Catholic Church, one of the largest and most beautiful in southwestern Wisconsin, overlooks the village. Nearby is St. Anne’s Shrine, a 60-year-old chapel at the top of a hillside path lined with the Stations of the Cross. The Municipal Park is home to many community events, and has a playground, pavilion for large gatherings, a ball diamond, tennis and basketball courts and a swimming pool. HIKING A DESERT IN THE MIDWESTHike the Spring Green Nature Conservancy just outside of town. Climb up the bluff and take in the view of the valley.
