FROM THE COMMODORE

Our 145th Annual Meeting was a very special evening for The SFYC. Those present witnessedBill Melbostad’s passion for The SFYC and rewarded him for the great job that he did as the2014 Commodore with a rousing standing ovation.

That evening, the membership approved the addition of S/C Ken Frost to the esteemed list of SFYCHonorary Life Members. Congratulations Ken and thank for your excellent service!

It was a very special evening for me as I humbly accepted the honor as the 82nd Commodore of TheSFYC. It was also a very special evening for the women members as I am the second woman to hold thiscoveted position.

When I thought about what to say that night, I did not want to come across as self-important orpretentious. I have worked hard and made contributions. Yet, not one of those contributions wasaccomplished without the support of other members of The SFYC. Instead, I conveyed a few of the lessonsI have learned that will guide me over the next year.

Commitment to ExcellenceCommitment to excellence helps us raise the bar above being good at what we do. To me, it is a

question of how we leverage the skills of other members to achieve the level of excellence of our programsexpected by The SFYC membership.

Do the Right ThingThis applies to dealing with the concerns of one member to the membership at large. I will seek to

treat every member as I would like to be treated, with compassion and respect, and to clearly understandeach of the critical elements of each concern. I will also be disciplined in understanding the consequencesof decisions made to ensure that each is made in the best interests of The SFYC membership.

TEAMWORK!Clearly, there is only one person at the helm as Commodore. That person is only as successful as the

leaders supporting the Commodore. Everybody is for “teamwork,” but what does that really mean? To me,it means working collaboratively to solve a problem or to reach an objective without getting hung-up onego or rank. It also means striving to be a valued and trusted teammate particularly when there are thosethat may be skeptical about what we are trying to achieve or how we are trying to achieve it.

I am proud of the 2015 leadership team. In addition to my very accomplished Flag Officers, V/C EdLynch and R/C Jerry Eaton, I have a diverse and highly qualified group to work with on the Board. And, Iam fortunate to have very capable members serving as Committee Chairs and as the Auxiliary Co-President. The team includes:

V/C Ed Lynch: Facilities Planning Chair David Cobb: Harbor ChairDon Jesberg: Treasurer and Finance Chair Director Paul Rosenlund: House ChairStephanie Stroub: Entertainment Chair Nancy DeMauro: Race Council ChairAngie Lackey Olson: Race Development Chair Patty Young: Youth Sailing ChairDirector Stu Reilly: Membership Chair S/C Ken Frost: Historical and Artifacts ChairHelen Reilly & Marily Rimmer: Auxiliary Co-Presidents S/C Wendy Miller: ProtocolS/C Jim Robinson: 8 Bells Committee Chair Rich Wideman: Port Captain

The SFYC Leadership Team has been working toward a seamless transition. In total, this represents wellover 100 dedicated, smart, and talented individuals that will be working toward maintaining thelongstanding excellent reputation of The SFYC programs. In addition, P/P Elizabeth Merrill has agreed toassist me with a new initiative to welcome our new members.

I am thankful to General Manager Steve DePetro for his counsel and encouragement over my yearsas a Flag Officer. I am very fortunate to have Steve’s support and the support of the high caliber SFYCmanagement team. One more extremely valuable teammate is Bryan Moore. I feel very blessed to be ableto share the honor of being the 2015 Commodore with Bryan by my side. I am confident that the 2015team will work collaboratively to achieve excellence and to serve the best interests of The SFYC. So TeamSFYC, let’s set our site on a fantastic 2015!

Carry on,

Suzie Moore, [email protected]

2015 is shaping up to beanother year of racingexcellence at The San

Francisco Yacht Club. We have afull regular racing schedule, with thecontinuance of some new eventsthat were incorporated into theschedule for the 2014 season likean expanding Small Keelboat Seriesand a Multihull Regatta. TheMidnight Moonlight MaritimeMarathon was resurrected in 2014and we hope to see it grow in2015. The major regatta in 2015will be the Audi Melges 20 WorldChampionship in late Septemberand early October. This class makesfor very exciting racing. The 2014’sNorth Americans were a successfultest for the much larger upcomingWorld Championship this year.

The SFYC Club ChampionshipSeries saw good participation in

2014, so please help carry this into2015. The 2015 Series kicks offwith the Rosenblum Regatta onMarch 14. This series is designedto be “user-friendly,” with easy buygood racing. If you have anyquestions about registration pleasecall or email the Race Office andLisa Turner and Forrest Gay willbe happy to assist in getting youracing.

Along with all the racing thatSFYC hosts we have also beencontinuing our commitment tosafety training. More than 70sailors were certified in ISAFSurvival at Sea courses at SFYC in2014. This year we have scheduledtwo more sessions, one in thespring and one in the fall. Theschedule and signup is available onour website under On theWater>Training.

So remember to check:• Your lines for chaffing

• Your shackles for rust andwear

• Make sure your fenders aretied and placed properly

• Most of all check your jibsheets and sails to makesure they are secure. This isthe most dangerousoversight your SFYC Harborstaff has to deal with instorms. When the jib sheetsget loose, they causedamage to boats, docks andare life threating to staff andmembers that try to securethem in already dangerousconditions.

for Tom on both Rhodes 19's andShields, and for Al Finley on his BearBoat. She later acquired her ownRhodes 19 and continued to competeas skipper.

In 1968 she raced in the LAMidwinters, which was quitefortuitous, as it was there at a regattaparty that she met Hal, her futurehusband. She was a good, solid sailorand smart and he was fascinated. They had their first date, a sailnaturally, in May of 1970. He was asailmaker, and would often be gonefor weeks racing. She was his first andlast girlfriend to understand. Later shewould accompany him on deliveriesup and down the California Coast. He “was gone,” hook, line and sinker!

Not only was Anne smart anddetermined, but she had gumption.

At the time when The SFYC had fewfemale members, she joined in orderto crew for Martha in the Adams Cupseries. Together they would go tothree Adams Cup finals. Anne wouldgo on to become the Area GRepresentative to the Adams Cup for15 years; often both competing andorganizing. One year she reached thefinals as skipper. She was a trailblazer, becoming the first woman to sail inthe SF Cup in 1970. In 1971 shecrewed for Hal in the CongressionalCup in Long Beach; becoming the firstwoman to crew in that event. Onememorable race occurred shortly

This year's Yachtswoman of theYear, Anne McCormack, hasmore years on the water than

most. Her sailing career began inBristol, Rhode Island, where she grewup near the water and in a sailingfamily. She enrolled in the local juniorsailing program at the age of ten andwent on to become a sailinginstructor and began racing with herfriends in local events as well as theNational Sears Cup and later AdamsCup championship regattas.

Anne’s love of sailing took her tomany places and eventually to SanFrancisco. As foredeck crew for hersister, Elizabeth, she had helped herteam win several elimination seriesand reach the Adams Cup finals in1967. They competed in that eventin Rochester, NY, before Annetraveled to join three roommates inSan Francisco. Soon afterward shemet Tom Martin through aconnection in RI, and met her nextAdams Cup skipper, MarthaMacDougal Martin. For severalyears at SFYC Anne was foredeckcrew for Martha on her Rhodes 19,

after Anne and Hal met, when he found outwhat she was made of. He invited Anne torace on Commodore Emmett Rixford'syacht, Annie Too, in the Buckner Race upthe Marin Coast and back. Nine wereaboard for the long race. They made it toPoint Reyes and conditions worsened toblowing 50 knots. They passed the BodegaBuoy downwind and the boat rolled, throwing Hal overboard and sending Anneover the lifelines. Luckily he hauled himselfback on board using the mainsheet andpushed her back over the lifelines first.Once back onboard, Anne tended to theentire seasick crew doling out Ritz crackersand buckets.

In 1972 Anne took three months offfrom work to do some racing. But not justany racing; she raced in the Newport toBermuda Race during a hurricane on a 68foot modern schooner named New World.Anne proved she was tough andundeterred by the weather because once in

Bermuda she was soon off in the direction ofEurope in the Transatlantic Race. From thereshe traveled to Norway to race in theInternational Knarr Championship on a boatcompeting against Hal, who was crewing forKnud Wibroe.

Hal and Anne would return to RhodeIsland where they were married July 14,1973. Honeymooning was a sail around thestate. The couple became a lifelong team;racing his Knarr and her Rhodes 19 from1974-77. In fact, she was crewing on theKnarr while very pregnant when Hal realizedit was time for Anne to take a break. Threequarters through their 1977 season their son,Skip, was born. P/P Carol Jesmore recalledseeing our Yachtswoman walking down thedock with a basket one day and thought itodd that she would be taking a lunchpacked in a basket to the wet Rhodes 19....As she drew nearer, Carol was surprised tofind a baby inside.

While taking time to care for their infantson back in Connecticut the familiar tug ofsailing pulled at both Anne and Hal. Anneconnected with the local yacht club inRowayton, where she organized and raced intheir Wednesday Night series. But Californiacalled and the family returned a year later. From 1978-90 the McCormacks were boat-less. But that would not stop them fromgetting out on the water. They turned toRace Committee work, Hal as PRO and Anneas timer and scorekeeper - a harbinger ofthings to come.

Anne continued to race and went onmany deliveries and cruises with Hal.Highlights that they both enjoyed includetheir three weeks in the South of France, where Hal hired and trained a crew for the93ft sailboat Diablesse; sailing Diablessefrom Guadeloupe through the Panama Canal, with eight year old Skip along; a wonderfulcruise from San Diego to Mexico withWyman and Gay Harris on Safari; anddown the California Coast, stopping at adifferent port every night, on AlHaussener's Josephine.

Being boat-less didn't last. In 2004 Anneand Hal began racing a Mercury. It wasdubbed Timex by the fleet (“takes a lickingbut keeps on ticking”) for reasons that wouldbecome clear. The couple were racing at theLong Beach Midwinters and headed in toavoid a squall when the boat rocked toweather. The water poured in, sinking theboat beneath them and sending it to thebottom. Fortunately it was shallow water, and

they were able to refloat the boat, re-rig it,and race it the next day - to win the regatta.

Anne has made a significant contributionto The SFYC Race Program. She was RaceOffice Administrator for sixteen years. Her titleis not indicative of the fact that she ran theplace; mentoring race chairs over the yearsand making the Race Program one of the bestin the country. She has been a resource andvast wealth of knowledge for The Club. She iswell deserving of the Marianne Mason awardfor Yachtswoman of the Year.

- By Tina Lundh with assistance from the McCormack Family

AUXILIARY HOLIDAY DECORATING A lot of work but a lot of fun with members helping outto make The Club look festive. SFYC is a special place with a warm family atmospherethat we all enjoy, especially during the holidays. A big thanks to our employees who did somuch to make our job easier. AUXILIARY

Marily and Helen are writing to you as thenewly elected co-presidents of The SFYCAuxiliary. Neither of us could have asked

to work with a better partner. The Club as well asthe Auxiliary are evolving and though having co-presidents is a novel idea for the Auxiliary, it worksfor 2015. We are all busy with many things and wefeel that by job-sharing we can provideexperienced leadership to our Board.

As a little background, Helen was a part of theAuxiliary Board beginning in 2005 and served aspresident in 2009. Marily joined the Board in 2011and served as President last year. We are bothhonored to be leading the Auxiliary again. It iscertainly notable to have Suzie Moore, only thesecond woman Commodore in The Club's history, lead The SFYC this coming year. It is also significantto have Bryan Moore as our “Honorary” AuxiliaryBoard member. Welcome Bryan!

We were busy in December starting withdecorating The Club for the holidays. The newsix foot tall nutcrakers and 12 ft. tall Christmastree made their debut and, along with theeveryone's favorite train and Reny's gingerbreadhouses, The Club was transformed into a magicalwinter wonderland. Thank you to our band ofvolunteer elves led by Eugenia Jesberg andConnie Lewis. Next on the calendar was thetraditional Children's Santa Brunch. This event isalways popular and the rain held off so Santa andMrs. Claus could safely arrive on their sleigh boatto the delight of all the children. Thanks go toEmily Heller, Tinsley Hutson-Wiley and Santaand Mrs. Claus for all the fun. Next we saw thenight Get Lit and the Harbor Lighted. Thejudging of the lighted boats was headed by ournewly elected Commodore Suzie Moore andRear Commodore Jerry Eaton. Thank you!
