SFT-NPX-10 Processing System

TheSFT-NPX-10ProcessingSystemisdesignedtoperformsupercriticalfluidextractionsincorporatinga5Litervessel,singleoroptionaldual10Litersamplevesselsorasingle20Litervesselwithsingleoroptionaldualseparators,andintegratedinterfacecontrols.Thesystemincludesfeaturesthatfacilitatethetransitionfromourlaboratoryscaleequipmenttopilotandproductionprocessingsystems.

Thissystemisconfiguredtoenablesupercriticalcarbondioxide(SCCO2)extractionusinga5Literextractionvesselor10Literextractionvessel(s)inasingleordualconfigurationorasingle20Literextractionvesselratedforoperationupto10,000psi(689BAR,68.9MPa)and120°C.Thesystemincludeseitheroneortwoseparatorvessels,apneumaticCO2pumpwithanintegratedwaterlesspre-chillertomaximizepumpingefficiency,andallassociatedvalvesandpiping.Thesystemismountedonapowdercoatedsteelframe.Pressuresandtemperaturesarecontrolledintheextractor(s)andseparator(s)withcontrolvalves,electronicheatexchangers,andpumpcontrol.

Benefits of Supercritical Fluid Extraction

UsingSupercriticalCO2toperformextractionsonbotanicals,herbs,spicesandothernaturalproductmaterialshassignificantbenefitsovertheuseoftraditionalliquidsolvents.CO2entersthesupercriticalregionatanelevatedtemperatureandpressure,whereitisnolongeraliquidorgas.Itbecomesasupercriticalfluid.Undertheseconditions,thefluidpossessesmanyofthesamecharacteristicsofaliquidsolventwiththeaddedbenefitofthehighdiffusivityofagas,andpressuretunablesolvencypower.ThereisnoneedtoperformadistillationstepsinceuponreturningtoatmosphericpressuretheCO2becomesagasandcanberecycled.ThismeansNOresidualsolventsareintheextract.Additionally,giventhatthesolvencypowerofthefluidispressuredependent,itispossibletofractionateandobtainmultiplefractionsfromasinglerawmaterial.Thisisimpossibletodowithtraditionalliquidsolventanddistillationprocessing.SupercriticalFluidTechnologiesalsoofferstrainingwitheachsystemcustomizedtoyourspecificapplication.

System OperationTheprocesscyclebeginswithfreshCO2gasfromliquid

bulkstorage.Theprocessstreampassesthroughacoriolismassflowmetertoprovideaccurateflowmeasurementthatisinsensitivetovariationsinpressureandtemperature.TheCO2streamisdeliveredat5

oCand725psi(5.0MPa)toapneumaticair-drivenpump(PMP1).CO2massflowiscontrolledbymodulatingtheairpressureappliedtothepumpviaanelectropneumaticregulator.Theprocessstreamisheatedtoamaximumprocesstemperatureof120oC.

Apressuretransducermeasurestheextractionvesselpressure.TheCO2flowiscontrolledthroughmodulationofamicrometeringcontrolvalve(PCV201).TheprocessstreamsubsequentlyflowsintotheSeparator#1.

Thesystemincludesaheatexchangerpriortotheextractorpressurecontrolvalve(PCV201).Thisheatexchangerisusedtowarmtheprocessstreamupto120oC,dependingonprocessrequirements,priortoflowthroughPCV201.Undersupercriticalconditions,thesetemperaturesincreasethesolubilityofextractintheSCCO2.FollowingexpansionthroughPCV201,aportionoftheextractfallsoutofsolution.ThepipingfromPCV201toSeparator#1isextremelyshortsothatthereisvirtuallynoopportunityfortheextracttoclogthelinesandsothatthereishighflowvelocityuponentryintoSeparator#1tofacilitatecentrifugalseparationoftheextractsolidfromtheCO2gasstream.

AfterSeparator#1,theCO2flowsthroughaheatexchanger.TheCO2nextflowsthroughapressurecontrolvalveandintothesecondseparator.ThepressurewithinSeparator#2ismaintainedwithabackpressureregulator(PCV203)attherecyclepressure.

Allshutoffvalvesinthehighpressureportionofthesystemareratedtoatleast10,000psi(689bar,68.9MPa).Highpressuretubingisatleast1/4inchouterdiameterandwillberatedto10,000psi(689bar,68.9MPa).
