Dielectric — SFT Cables incorporate pro-prietary low loss taped expanded PTFEdielectrics with 76% velocity. These providemuch greater inherent ruggedness thandielectrics with 80% or higher velocity. Thisresults in better flex life and stability inapplications, such as testing and fielddeployable antenna feeders, where thecable will be flexed over its life.
Inner Shield — The inner shield ofthe SFT cables is silver-plated copperflat ribbon braid. This construction, pioneered by Times Microwave Systemsin the mid-1960s, replaces groups ofround wire with a single silver-platedflat wire or ribbon. The result is a closeapproximation of a smooth, continuoussilver surface — the ideal coaxial cableinner shield. This is achieved whilemaintaining the ability for the cable toflex and bend due to the interwovenbraided construction.
Jacket — The jacket is translucent blueFEP (Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene). This tough, high temperature material pro-vides mechanical protection and its smoothlow friction sur face is ideal for routingthrough tight spaces. It is also inherentlyresistant to degradation from exposure toUV, making these cables suitable for out-door use.

Center Conductor — SFT™ Cables usesolid center conductors for the lowest atten-uation. The center conductors are silver- plated copper except for SFT-600. The silver plating provides the best long-termperformance in high frequency applica-tions. Since SFT-600 is limited to low frequencies by its size, the use of a copperclad aluminum conductor results in lowercost and weight.

Interlayer — The helically applied in t e r l aye r cons i s t s o f a compos i t eAluminum/Kapton ® tape, which serves to provide improved shielding and tomechanically restrain the flat braids tomaintain their electrical performance withflexing. This layer is removed for connectorattachment.
Outer Shield — The outer shield consistsof round wire braid. In addition to provid-ing additional shielding and mechanicalprotection, this layer is used for connectorattachment and retention. Connectors forthese cables are designed to crimp, clamp orsolder to the flat wire and round wire braids.

The SFT Product Line has been successfully deployed ina broad range of applications. It has been used in systemlevel microwave interconnects for airborne and groundbased military as well as, commercial telecom applications. It performs admirably as a low loss test cable for productiontesting of RF components and equipment with excellentphase stability and durability. The larger sizes are ideal forhigh power industrial applications, where their high powerhandling combined with flexibility provide long life insemi-conductor manufacturing equipment and roboticlaser cutting equipment. Interconnects in MRI systems andother medical applications utilize the low loss and stabilitythat these cables provide. The smaller sizes have been used

as board level interconnects within LRU’s in both militaryand commercial systems.
Our expertise as a cable assembly supplier has led to therefinement of these cable designs. They provide an excel-lent combination of outstanding electrical performance, mechanical ruggedness and cost effectiveness. Combinedwith the availability of a good selection of connectors, thismakes them the practical choice for a broad range ofdemanding applications. Our field engineers can help youto select the right cable for your application from the rangeof SFT cables or the large range of other standard and special cables produced by Times Microwave Systems.

SFT™ Cable Assemblies
Finish Metals: G=Gold SS=Stainless Steel
Premium connectors attach to the cable via a solder to both the outer shield and the center conductor. Achieving the stated performance requires expert soldering techniques and precise trimming of the outer shield, which is best accomplished with
automated stripping equipment, and expert soldering techniques. They are suitable for use by experienced, professional cable assembly shops. Below are some of the connectors for reference:
SFT™ Premium Performance Connectors
Times Microwave Systems also provides SFT cables as assemblies to meet a broad range of application requirements. We provide special testing, custom connectors, improved strain relief, special markings and other services to meet the requirements of your application. We produce the cable assemblies in our facilities in US or China (Shanghai).
