ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY
The Society for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art (SECA) was founded in 1961 as an
auxiliary of the San Francisco Museum of Art. SECA’s objective was to encourage private collectors
to purchase contemporary works by local and national artists. Groups of works were assembled
for viewing with the intent of allowing members to purchase them. At this time, only half of the
exhibit was dedicated to Bay Area artists.
SECA’s function shifted to awarding prizes to individual artists in 1967 and focused its attention on
supporting Bay Area artists exclusively. Its dedication to local talent manifested itself in facilitating
dialog between local artists, SECA members, and art professionals outside of the Bay Area; in the
educational programs offered to its members and the general public; in its encouragement of art
collecting; and its awards’ exhibition and promotion of local artists.
Individual awards evolved into multiple awards combined with small group shows. A monetary gift
from the Charles E. Merrill Trust in 1974 increased the possible number of award recipients. Studio
visit were introduced in 1981 as part of the art award selection process. The visits were intended to
fulfill the educational requirements for the SECA membership.
A film award was introduced in 1973 and was held irregularly until its last occurrence in 1998. A
photography award was added in 1976 and last held in 1982. Very little documentation remains for
the photography award. A video award was added in 1988 and was last held in 1992. An electronic
media award was held once in 1996, and an architecture and design award was also held once in
2001.
SECA presents several membership activities each year, such as presentations by artists, curators,
and other art professionals, often held as informal gatherings in a member’s home or art gallery. It
offers art tours of cities both in the United States and abroad. The tours visit museums, important
private collections, and galleries. Membership activities also include dinners, picnics, and other
social events.
Membership to the auxiliary was, initially, exclusively male. Records show that by 1964,
membership was opened to couples. However, women were not allowed to join until 1966 and even
then they were only allowed to comprise 10% of the membership. Due to the gaps in the
documentation for the late 1960 and the 1970s, it is not clear when women were allowed to join
without restriction.
The SECA Council is the auxiliary’s governing body. The officers of the Council include the Chair, the
Treasurer, and the Secretary. The Chair is elected for one to two years by a Council majority vote.
The position is responsible for presiding over all Council meetings. The Treasurer oversees the
organization’s budget and expenditures. The Secretary maintains complete record of all
proceedings. When deemed necessary by the Chair, a Vice-Chair position was also added to assist
the Chair. Generally, the Council consists of anywhere from 11 to 16 SECA members elected by a
Council majority vote from a list presented by the Nominating Committee, one of several
committees maintained by the Council overseeing activities and administration.
In 2001, New Forum, a group sponsored by and affiliated with the Collectors Forum, was merged
with SECA to form a new education and collection group, IN/SITE. The Collectors Forum is an
invitation-only membership organization that provides support for the Museum and its Painting
and Sculpture Department while offering its members the opportunity to participate in the
Museum's acquisitions program, as well as travel and education opportunities. New Forum’s
Page 7
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art 6
function was to nurture SFMOMA members and donors who were new or experienced collectors of
emerging artists. Unlike the Collectors Forum, membership to New Forum was open to any
SFMOMA member.
The programs and goals of the SECA and New Forum were seen as overlapping and it was deemed
advantageous to combine them together. The decision was made to keep the name SECA for the
awards as it was an already established and recognizable program. By 2004, the decision was made
to retire the name IN/SITE and return to the name SECA. The new name was perceived by some
auxiliary members, museum staff, and the local art community to be too confusing.

PROCESSING NOTES
A small portion of the collection was originally housed with records from the Office of the Director
(ARCH.ADM.004 and ARCH.ADM.005). The remainder came from two sources: the older records
were kept in the museum’s storage area and the more recent records were kept in the office of the
SECA Coordinator in the Development department. The series were created to provide structure to
the records and facilitate access. Filing systems varied in care and approach depending on the
coordinator in charge. Also, records were separated by irregular transfer of records by the
generating department to different storage locations within the museum.
The records are primarily administrative in nature, pertaining to its organizational management,
and that of its awards and educational programs. Duplicate or redundant records were
deaccessioned. Files related to SECA exhibitions through 1976 can be found in the Exhibition
Records (ARCH.EXH.001). More recent exhibition records remain unprocessed. SECA publications
can be found in Publications Collection (ARCH.ADM.009).
The records are housed in legal size folders. Some oversize records are housed in flat oversize
boxes.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection dates from 1961 to the present. It documents SECA’s award and programmatic
activities and its administrative history through correspondence, meeting minutes, financial
records, publications, press releases, invitations to events, announcements, press clippings, and
other materials.
The SECA records are divided into four series: Organizational, Administrative, Events and Activities,
and Awards.
The Organizational files document SECA’s Council, Committee and Membership activities. They
include official records such as meeting minutes, by-laws, committee meeting reports,
membership correspondence, and member rosters.
The Administrative files cover the clerical and managerial aspects of SECA including general
correspondence, financial records, fundraising efforts, and general clerical documentation.
The Events and Activities files document the various programs offered to SECA members. They
include social gatherings such as member dinners and picnics; as well as lectures, panel discussions
with significant collectors, and important art professionals; artists’ talks in art galleries and SECA
members’ homes; national and international travel to visit museums, art galleries, studio visits, and
private collections.
The Awards files relate to the procedures and production involved in the organization and
implementation of SECA’s art, film, and other awards. The awards honor local artists of exceptional
promise with an exhibition at the museum. The process involves soliciting artist recommendations,
slide reviews, studio visits, and selection voting.
Award recipients have included Bonnie Sherk, Squeak Carnwath, Michael Naimark, Barry McGee,
Rigo ’98, Kathryn Van Dyke, John Bankston, and Rosana Castrillo Diaz.

Page 36
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art 35
ART was established to enhance the relationship between the SFMOMA and its auxiliaries, as well
as improve coordination of activities and resources between the different auxiliary groups. It
functions as an oversight committee and is headed by two co-chairs or trustee representatives.
ART activities consist of three meetings per year. Meeting attendees include heads of each of the
auxiliary groups, staff contact for each group, and other SFMOMA staff as needed.
1.4.5 SECA Operating Plan, 2004-2006
The records include correspondence, meeting notes, and meeting agenda. The goal was to
generate ideas for new programs and events that would increase SECA membership and ultimately
generate funds to support the SECA Art Award.
Subseries 1.5: Membership, 1960-2006
SECA memberships are renewed yearly. The renewal reminder was usually included in the
Chairman’s letter to the membership at the beginning of the calendar year.
In 1987, the membership year was adjusted to correspond with the museum’s fiscal year which
started July 1st. This was done to facilitate bookkeeping practices.
In 1988, a new policy was implemented that required SECA members to maintain current museum
member or donor status.
In 1993, SECA membership policies were altered for individuals interested in joining the auxiliary. A
single letter of recommendation replaced the three sponsorship letters previously required to
apply for membership. The change was an attempt to enlarge and diversify the membership. The
former policy was seen as cumbersome by some and elitist by others.
This subseries is arranged alphabetically and relates to SECA’s membership. Within each file, the
records are arranged chronologically. They are comprised of correspondence related to
membership such as letters of acceptance, interest, invitation, and resignation; renewal forms; and
member rosters.

Subseries 3.1: Annual Dinner, 1983-2003
The annual SECA member dinner typically took place in September. It offered members an
opportunity to meet council members, to learn about programs taking place in the coming year,
and frequently featured presentations by artists or art professionals. SECA award winners were
also frequently invited to the dinner.
The records include correspondence, guest lists, invitations, announcements, and planning notes.
Below are examples of some of the dinners:
1986
The dinner featured Ed Ruscha and honored Henry Hopkins.
1987
The dinner was a commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the SECA Art Award and featured the
award recipients of the previous 20 years as special guests.
1998
The dinner was held at the Southern Exposure Gallery and featured works by emerging artists.
2003
The dinner was replaced with a reception. The SECA membership was invited to a small reception
with wine and hors d’oeuvres followed by a brief talk and a masked wrestling performance by
Carlos Amorales, entitled Amorales vs. Amorales (Challenge 2003). The 2004 SECA Art Award
winners were also invited.
Subseries 3.2: Fireside Chats, 1995-2007
The Fireside Chats offered SECA members a chance to discuss art issues in detail with recognized
artists and art professionals. Each chat featured an artist and was held at a member’s home. SECA
members were encouraged to educate themselves about the Fireside Chat guest beforehand so as
to make the event more dynamic and rewarding. The chats were meant to be intimate and were
limited to 15 participants. They required a reservation and a small fee to attend and frequently had
a waiting list.
The records include correspondence, guest lists, form letters, planning notes, and announcements.

In addition to the longstanding programs, SECA offered a variety of events and activities that only
occurred once or for one year. Additionally, there may be little documentation on the event. This
subseries groups them together. The General files in particular contain records of these events.
The records include correspondence, guest lists, planning notes, invitations, and announcements.
Subseries 3.4: SECA Evenings, 1965-2003
SECA Evenings frequently featured an informal discussion or lecture given by artists or art

Subseries 3.7: SECA Trips, 1963-2005
These were national and international trips offered to SECA members. They were limited to small
groups and the events usually consisted of behind-the-scenes tours of important private
collections, art galleries, and museum; cocktails and dinners; and visits to local sites of interest.
They were lead by a SECA tour leader and sometimes by local curators or local hosts.
The records include correspondence, itineraries, planning notes, and announcements.
Subseries 3.8: Visiting Critics Fellowship, 1987-1993
The goals of the fellowships were to offer SECA artists one-on-one time with established art
critics, to educate the SECA membership about art criticism, and to promote Bay Area arts.
Activities included studio visits, public lectures, and more intimate SECA members-only talks.
The records include correspondence, itineraries, planning notes, artist information, meeting
minutes, press releases, and announcements.
Series 4: SECA Awards, 1967-2007
Boxes 1-16, Cartons 9-10
Subseries 4.1: SECA Art Awards, 1967-2007
SECA began its art award in 1967. Initially bestowed upon individuals, the awards evolved into
awards combined with small group shows.
In the early years, the selection process involved teams of four or five SECA members. Led by a
team captain, they were divided up geographically: Sacramento, East Bay, Peninsula, and San
Francisco. They were responsible for visiting artists’ studios in their area and for nominating award
finalists. SECA members would then have the opportunity to cast their votes. As the award grew,
the artist visits and voting procedures were constantly being fine-tuned and modified. SECA
members expressed a desire for greater SECA member and museum-staff participation in the
selection process.
Beginning in 1988, recommendations solicited from Bay Area art professionals and SECA members
are introduced to the search process. The allotted exhibition space was also increased two to three
times in size. SFMOMA agreed to match SECA’s underwriting funds increasing its budget four
times for costs related to the exhibit and documentation.
In 1994, the evaluation process involving the selection of the finalists and the choice of award
recipients was modified to include greater input from SFMOMA’s Department of Painting and
Sculpture. The selection of award finalists and award recipients would be made by the curatorial
staff rather than the SECA membership. It was felt that the award would gain greater prestige and
credibility from this change.
In 1996, Chief Curator Gary Garrels and Assistant Curator of Painting and Sculpture Janet Bishop
selected three winners for the award: D-L Alvarez, Anne Appleby, and Barry McGee.
The records include artist applications, correspondence, itineraries, planning notes, press releases,
announcements, and catalogs
