Beforewegetunderway,thefirststepisthetogetthewingmotifonthe

frontofyourbag.Ichosetogowithfabricpainttoget

Butifyou’dpreferappliqué,thisiswhereyouwouldfuseyourappliquéfabrictothefrontofyourbagusingthepatternguidelines.Thensewitinplaceifyoudesire:D

TheexposedzipperlookthatIachievedonthefrontofthebagusesa

techniquethat’salittlebeyondbeginner.It’smade

bysewingkindawindowinthefabric.You’lldothisbylayeringoneofyourpocketpiecesoveryourbagfrontwithrightsidestogether.Matchupthezipperplacementboxesexactly,thensewalongtheoutlineofthisboxsothetwopiecesaresewntogether.

Followingtheguidelinesthatruninsidethebox,cutopentheinsideofthebox,gettingasclosetothecornersaspossiblewithoutaccidentallysnippingthethread.Turnthepockettothewrongsideofthebagfrontusingthatopeningyoujustcut.Itwillfeelalittlestrange,butifyousmoothouttheseamlinesfromtheboxyou’vesewn,you’llseethatyoucanturnitrightsideoutwithjustalittlebitoffinagling.Pressitfirmlysotheedgeslookniceandcrisp.

Ifyou’veturnedthefabricproperly,itshouldlooksomethinglikethis.Thetwofabricssewntogetherfromthatrectangleformsalittlewindow.Oncethatareaisfirmlypressed,layyourzipperbehinditandholditinplacewithpinsortapeasI’vedonehere.Thenyou’llwanttosewallthewayaroundtherectangle,makingsurethatyou’realsocatchingthezippertape,andthesliderofthezipperispulledtothemiddleofthewindow.Becarefulwhensewingoverthezipper;you’llwanttodoitveryslowly.Trimtheexcesszippertapewhenyoufinish.

Tocompletethepocket,foldbackthemainbagfabricandfocusonthe

pocketsectionthat’snowconnectedtoyourzipper.Take

yourremainingpocketpieceandlineitupwiththefirstpocketpiecebymatchingupalltherawedgeswithrightsidestogether.Sewaroundtheentireperim-eterofthesquare,andthatcompletesyourpocket!Sinceit’spartofthelining,there’snoneedtoturnitrightsideoutoranythinglikethat:D

Whenyou’refinished,yourpocketshouldlooksome-thinglikethis.Thiswillall

behiddenbythemainliningofyourbagwhenyoufinish.

Considerclippingintotheseamallowancesofthebagsides(about3/8”to½”).Thiswillhelptheedgestretchandcurvearoundthebagsidesaloteasier.

Nowyoucansewonthesides.Takeyourbagsidespieceandmatchupthesquaremarkingsthatappearinthecornerswiththesquaremarkingsthatareonthesidesofthebagfront.

Matchuptherawedgesasyougoaroundthesidesandbottomofthebag.Ifitallmatchesupproperly,thenyouarefreetosewitinplace.

Whenyoufinish,repeatthiswiththeotherlongedgeofthebagsidesandyourbagbackpiece.Gobackandrepeatthisstepwithyourliningpiecesaswell,exceptremembertoleaveanopeninginthebottomofthebagasthepatternindicatesforturningitrightsideout:D

Withboththeliningandthemainbagdone,you’llwanttosewthemtogetheralongthetopedge.Nestlethemainbagintotheliningwithrightsidestogetherandmatchuptheupperedge.Thisincludesmatchinguptheextensionsatthetopofthebagaswellasthetopedgesofthesidepieces.

Wheneverythingisalllinedupandpinned,youcansewalongthetopedge,beingsuretopivotatthecornerswheresidesmeetatthebagfrontandback.Goaroundtheentireperimeter.

Whenyoufinishitshouldlooksomethinglikethis.It’sanoddshape,butifyou

managetogetthroughallthepivotingit’lllookperfect

whenyouturnitinsideout.

Fromhereyou’llwanttoclipallthecornersandcurves–espe-ciallytheconvexcornerswherethebagsidesmeetthebagfrontandback.Thenturnthebagrightsideoutfromtheopeningintheliningandevenoutthetopedge,pokingtheextensionswithachopsticktogetthembackoutandallthat.Ironthistopedgereallyfirmlysoitlookscrisp.

Tokeepitlookingcrisp,edgestitcharoundthetopedge,pivotingatall

thecornersandwhatnotjustasinstep8.Whenyou

finishwiththat,you’llwanttogobackandsewuptheopeningleftintheliningeitherwithahandsewnladderstitchoranedgestitchdonebymachine.Andthat’sprettymuchthemainbodyofthebag!Giveyourselfapatontheback,andnextwedothestraps^-^

Ifyou’reusingalighterweightfabric,you’llwanttocreateyourstrapsbyfoldingeachedgeunderby5/8”,thenfoldingthewholestrapinhalfwithwrongsidesfacing,thenedgestitchingthefoldededgestogether.

Minewasalittledifferenthowever.SinceIwasusingthickvinyl,itdoesn’tfoldascleanlyoreasily.Inthatcaseitwasbesttofoldthestrappieceintothirdsandsewdownbothedges.

Whateverfabricyou’reusing,you’llwanttorepeatthiswithyourotherstrappiece.

Toattachthemetalrings,you’llwanttolooponethroughoneofthebagextensionsatthetopedge.Thenfoldtheextensiondownuponitselfbyabout1½”.Sewtheoverlappedareainplacewithaboxstitch.Repeatthiswiththeother3extensionsandremainingmetalrings.

Thenlastlyyou’llneedtoattachthestraptotheotherhalfofyourmetal

rings.Looptheendofoneofyourstrapsthroughametal

ringonthefrontsideandfolditoveronitselfjustasinthepreviousstep.Sewitinplacewithaboxstitch.Theotherendofyourstrapshouldgothroughtheremainingmetalringonthefrontside.Besurethatthestrapdoesn’tgettwistedalongtheway.

Onceyouhaveonesidecomplete,takeyourotherstrapandrepeatthiswiththebacksideofyourbag.
