4-H’er Opportunities
Senior Scholarships Seward County 4-H will be awarding scholarships to
deserving 4-H’ers in the 2019 graduating class. To be
eligible for these scholarships, 4-H’ers must have
submitted their Career Portfolio. Letters for the 4-H
scholarships will be mailed out in November to
eligible seniors. County scholarship applications
will be due early January.
Martha & Don Romeo Scholarship Fund The Nebraska Association of Fair Managers will award a
$500 scholarship to one qualifying male and female who
are graduating seniors in the state of Nebraska and who
plan to continue with post high school education. The
Nebraska 4-H Introduces the Fed Steer Challenge Nebraska 4-H along with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Department of Animal Science is offering the Nebraska 4-H Fed Steer Challenge. The Fed Steer Challenge is a new opportunity for youth and is designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders in the Nebraska cattle industry. The goal of the Fed Steer Challenge is to enhance the educational value of the traditional 4-H beef projects by providing an affordable option that rewards production merit and carcass value of the market animal, along with accurate and complete record keeping, industry knowledge, and producer engagement by the 4-H member.
Contest Components:
Raising a commercial steer—4-H Member: Selects and raises a commercial steer to market weight (1,350 lbs). Utilizes management and nutrition protocol similar to a commercial feedlot. Maintains detailed record book related to the management and feeding of the steer. Steers will be displayed in the Nebraska 4-H Fed Steer Challenge Commercial Cattle Class at the
2019 Nebraska State Fair. Steers will be visually evaluated by a commercial cattle buyer representing a packer. Predicted carcass merit (USDA Quality Grade and Yield Grade) and market value. Following the live exhibition, steers will be transported to a commercial packer, harvested, and carcass data
will be collected. Evaluation of 4-H member's knowledge and interpersonal skills Knowledge related to their project and the cattle industry as a whole Accuracy and details related to a record book Interview with representatives from the cattle industry

County Fair 4-H Premium Checks 4-H premium checks from the county fair are now available to
be picked up at the Extension Office. They must be picked up
by December 31.
County Fair Champion Awards Hoodie, baseball cap and trophy champion awards are now
available for pick up at the Extension Office. Pick up your
gear and show off your achievements from the county fair!
Registration for School Year Camps Open!
During the school year, 4-H Camps will be hosted throughout the state. Nebraska 4-H
Camps and Centers provide a wonderful opportunity for youth to get away from it all
and spend quality time connecting with nature and the great outdoors while they have
