Nebraska 4-H Introduces the Fed Steer Challenge Nebraska 4-H along with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Department of Animal Science is offering the Nebraska 4-H Fed Steer Challenge. The Fed Steer Challenge is a new opportunity for youth and is designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders in the Nebraska cattle industry. The goal of the Fed Steer Challenge is to enhance the educational value of the traditional 4-H beef projects by providing an affordable option that rewards production merit and carcass value of the market animal, along with accurate and complete record keeping, industry knowledge, and producer engagement by the 4-H member.

Contest Components:

Raising a commercial steer—4-H Member: Selects and raises a commercial steer to market weight (1,350 lbs). Utilizes management and nutrition protocol similar to a commercial feedlot. Maintains detailed record book related to the management and feeding of the steer. Steers will be displayed in the Nebraska 4-H Fed Steer Challenge Commercial Cattle Class at the

2019 Nebraska State Fair. Steers will be visually evaluated by a commercial cattle buyer representing a packer. Predicted carcass merit (USDA Quality Grade and Yield Grade) and market value. Following the live exhibition, steers will be transported to a commercial packer, harvested, and carcass data

will be collected. Evaluation of 4-H member's knowledge and interpersonal skills Knowledge related to their project and the cattle industry as a whole Accuracy and details related to a record book Interview with representatives from the cattle industry

Important 4-H Club Information

Year End Treasurer’s Report—Due December 31

As we near the end of the 2018 4-H year, 4-H clubs will need to prepare a Year Ending 4-H Club Treasurer’s

report. Even if your club does not have a treasury and does not have an EIN Number, please complete the Year

Ending 4-H Club Treasurer’s Report and submit it to the Extension Office.

Extension staff will then forward the information to the IRS for the Form 990 or Form 990 EZ. This is important

so that Seward County 4-H and the Nebraska 4-H Foundation can maintain their tax status.

Volunteer Enrollment

All 4-H volunteers need to re-enroll in 4honline every year. Please make sure that your club organizational

leaders, as well as any one who helps in anyway with your club, is enrolled. You may re-enroll for the 2019 year

after October 16. Go to https://ne.4honline.com/

Leadership Changes?

Let us know if your club will be changing organizational leaders as soon as possible, so we can update our address

lists. Thank you to all of the 4-H club leaders, who do the important work of positive youth development.

4-H Club Meeting Minutes are needed for each organized meeting your 4-H club holds. Thank you to those clubs

who have been turning them in after each meeting. If your club has not turned them in yet, please do so before the

end of the year.

officer, meeting, and teaching resources. https://4h.unl.edu/resources/club-leaders
