OLPH History, Mission Statement, Vision Statement and Core Values

Matthew 28:18-20: The Commissioning of the Disciples

Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go,

therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have

commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish has a rich, black cultural history. From its formation in 1920, the Black

Catholics of Anacostia contributed to its development and growth through their sacrifices of time, talent, skills and funds to provide a parish plant of their own. Thus, the

uniqueness of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish places it in a leadership position to interact with other Black and

non-black parishes in utilizing the gifts of Black spirituality through music, dance, education, and special action.

MISSION STATEMENT: We, the people, of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, therefore, acknowledge that our Pastoral Mission is to proclaim Christ and teach the “Good News”, to worship and bear witness in the community, to love and serve as Jesus commanded, and to preserve and share our rich Black heritage.

VISION STATEMENT: “A Roman Catholic church that is actively visible in the Community, shares its spirituality through fellowship, and is committed to serving God.”

CORE VALUES BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS: We will always speak the truth, respect the opinions and roles of all parishioners, and value each person, always maintaining Christian charity in all of our actions.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH: We will seek to increase the understanding of our Catholic faith and expand our spiritual growth by participating in and supporting charitable and spiritual activities, in addition to attending Mass.

STEWARDSHIP: We will become involved in church activities and commit our time, talent and treasures.

INCLUSION: We will be open and inviting by extending ourselves to all by sharing in our parish life; thereby, reaffirming our vision of being actively visible in the community.

LEGACY: We will preserve our rich Black cultural history by respecting the past, continuing in service and faith in the present, and committing to the future of OLPH.

Sunday, May 13th: The Ascension of Our Lord, which celebrates the day on which the risen Christ, in the sight of His apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven is a moveable feast. The date of the Ascension depends on the date of Easter. Ascension Thursday always falls 40 days after Easter (counting both Easter and Ascension Thursday), but since the date of Easter changes every year, the date of Ascension does as well. For many dioceses of the United States (or, more accurately, many ecclesiastical provinces, which are collections of dioceses), the celebration of Ascension has been transferred from Ascension Thursday (40 days after Easter) to the following Sunday (43 days after Easter).

3:00-4:00 pm NBCC WEBINAR ON RACISM. The National

Black Catholic Congress presents Overcoming

theSin of Racism: A Change of Heart

Mandated by God. This webinar will focus on the need for honesty in admitting our complicity in the sin of racism within our Catholic community. We will contextualize our remarks with the mandates found in the Gospel and in our Catholic Social Teachings. We invite our listeners to discover that racism cannot be “fixed”, but rather we are all called to be transformed into a Beloved Community where all are cherished. This webinar will be recorded and will be available for viewing on the NBCC website. Webinar Presenters: Bishop Roy Edward Campbell, Jr. (Co-Chair of the statewide Joint Taskforce on Racism for the MD Catholic Conference and Chair of the Committee on Racism for ADW); Sr. Patricia Chappell, SNDdeN (Esecutive Director, Pax Christi USA); and Mr. Ralph McCloud (Director, Catholic Campaign for Human Development).

the Class resumes

the Book of Samuel!

It can be very important whom we sit next to. Any family that has tried to sit down to a

family dinner or packed the car for a trip has heard children argue at least once about who

should sit where. To sit next to someone, especially if that person is important, is to

have a place of honor. Jesus has this place of honor seated at God’s right hand, but there’s more to this metaphor than where Jesus sits

in relation to God. To be in the place of honor is also to be in a place of power. Knowing

people in powerful places can be helpful. Our children remind us of this each time we are

called upon to referee a conflict. Jesus, honored at God’s right hand, is a powerful ally for us. As you gather as a family, recall a time when there was a discussion, or perhaps even an argument, about where people were going to sit. Talk about why it might be important to

a person to sit in a particular place. Observe that in today’s Gospel we will learn about

Jesus’ place in heaven. Read together today’s Gospel, Mark 16:15-20. Talk about what we might learn about the relationship between

God and Jesus from today’s Gospel and what we learn about Jesus’ relationship to us.

Observe that one of the things we learn is that Jesus continues to help us from this place of honor in heaven. Pray together the Apostles’

Creed.

Did you know? The more you give to God’s service,

the more He returns to you!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ MORE ABOUT MARY – DID YOU KNOW?

Mary would have been about 15 years old when she received God’s message that she was to be the mother of the Messiah. She said yes to God and became pregnant with God’s Son. This posed quite a problem in Mary’s society. Because she was unmarried, she could have been killed as an adulteress. An angel told Joseph that his betrothed Mary was pregnant with a child conceived through the Holy Spirit. Joseph listened to God’s messenger and did not leave Mary or shame her. Instead he married Mary and protected her. In the last month of her pregnancy, Mary and Joseph had to make a long and difficult journey to Bethlehem. After Jesus was born, they became refugees, escaping to Egypt to protect Jesus from Herod’s soldiers. They lived as refugees for a while until it was safe to return to their homeland and settle in Nazareth. In this setting, Mary and Joseph raised Jesus to be a faithful Jew, aware of the injustices in the world, but believing in God’s justice, mercy, and love— believing that there is another way. By doing so, they changed the world. Mary has a unique and privileged place in salvation history and in the Church. Because she responded yes to becoming the Mother of God, she is our first model of discipleship and our model of grace and trust in God. These moments in Mary’s life offer us the opportunity to learn from her and emulate her response to God. Mary teaches us how to lead our lives in faith and hope and love.

Prayer is an essential part of maintaining a strong intimate relationship with the Lord our God. Through faith prayer does

change things, and the Bible teaches us to pray without ceasing. As we continue to pray and know that God is able to

do all things but fail, we can walk in victory no matter what our circumstances.
