love these lakesPriest LakeTourism offi cials are cautious about overusing the term “crown jewel.” But the term is richly justifi ed to describe this stunning north Idaho waterway. With most of its 755 acres designated as public land, it’s light on development but heavy on recreation – think fi shing, boating, hiking, berry picking or simply relaxing.
Lake Pend Oreille With a surface area of 148 square miles and a depth of 1,150 feet, this Idaho lake is the fi fth deepest in the U.S. This gives plenty of room for everyone to play, from full-sized sailboats to hush-hush U.S. Navy subs. Then there’s nearby Sandpoint which has its own unique charm.
Lake Coeur d’AleneIf you’ve only seen the impressive city along its northern edge, you’ve merely seen a portion of this beautiful lake. There are lovely views to be had all along its 49.8 square miles – picturesque bays to pull your boat in, tranquil hiking trails and many lovely beaches and swimming spots.
Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake Created in 1941 during the impoundment of the Grand Coulee Dam, the 125-square-mile reservoir is the largest in the state and has become a prime spot for outdoor rec enthusiasts. There’s no shortage of fi shing, boating, camping and hunting opportunities, plus a fun ferry ride and excellent wildlife viewing spots.
Medical LakeEarly settlers knew there was something special about this little lake on Spokane’s western edge: people felt good after swimming in it, and in the early 1900s, soaps and ointments were even made from its salts. Today, the lake and the city of 5,000 residents still attracts plenty of swimmers.
Long LakeBefore the Spokane River empties into Lake Roosevelt, it passes over Long Lake Dam and creates this scenic 15-square-mile reservoir known for its warm water fi shing populations including yellow perch, smallmouth and largemouth bass, and black crappie. This year, Avista and the State of Washington plan to start stocking rainbow trout.
Lake Chelan Why drive four hours from Spokane when there are many other lakes closer to home? Because its Lake Chelan, which offers great adventure all year long – there’s 50 miles of lake to enjoy, plus wines to taste, trails to hike, golf courses and shops to visit, and many other sights to see.
Hayden Lake As endorsements go, Bing Crosby was a big booster of this north Idaho lake. Everything is beautiful on its 3,800 acre surface – the beaches, the opportunities for fi shing, two public and two private boat launches, hiking trails, a camp area and the proximity to the oldest golf course in the state.
Liberty LakeThough the nearby city incorporated in 2001, the lake near the Washington-Idaho border has been attracting visitors for decades, especially for ideal water skiing and sailing conditions. It’s part of Spokane County’s 3,591-acre Liberty Lake Regional Park which includes wetlands, and seasonal swimming and camping areas, plus a nearby off-road vehicle park.
