ANZAC Day Service at Hyde Park Our Year 6 leaders will attend the Schools Remember ANZAC Commemorative Service on Wednesday 5 April at the ANZAC Memorial, Hyde Park, Sydney. We will be joining other schools from The Blacktown Learning Community and the service is conducted in collaboration with the Catholic Education Commission NSW and the Association of Independent Schools of NSW who, along with the Department of Education and the Return Services League of Australia (NSW Branch), coordinate students to participate in the Service. During the ceremony all schools are invited to lay a wreath or floral tribute at the memorial. At 11.30am on Wednesday 26 April the school will conduct an ANZAC Service to recognise all the Australian and New Zealand men and women who fought in Gallipoli and all the other wars since. Our School Captains will lead the school in showing our respect to all who faced the hardships and dangers of war. New School Representative Blazers The P&C has purchased a number of representative blazers to be worn by our School Leaders and School Representatives when participating in important school business. Thank you to the P&C and Mrs Saad for storing them safely in the Uniform Shop. Invoices Invoices are coming home again this week for families who still have payments to make. Please note there is information on the back of the invoice with payment details and due dates. Please contact the office if you would like to set up a payment plan. Harmony Day This year we are celebrating harmony Day on Thursday 30 March and due to a rather full calendar this term it will be a low key event. The students may dress in something orange and we will have a school picnic lunch up on the oval. We are hoping to celebrate our community and the cultures that help to make our school by having a Multi-Cultural day later in the year. Kiss and Drop Rules

Please be aware that

towards the end of term

3/4H Report Students in 3/4H have been working hard across

all learning areas this term and continue to produce excellent work in our classroom.

We have started a number of lessons on critical and creative thinking this term and will continue to work on our 7 dispositions, 6 coloured thinking caps and CCT crunches throughout the year.

CHANGE OF DATE: Both our Year 3 projects on Rube Goldberg devices and Year 4 projects on Arcade Game constructions are now due on WEDNESDAY 5 APRIL. This allows for an extra day to prepare the projects for transport to school. We are really looking forward to displaying our finished projects and finding out how we used our creative thinking skills.

Congratulations to those students who have moved through a number of spelling levels this term. We have many students who are close to moving up full grade levels.

We are pleased to report that almost all students in our class have perfect records for submitting their homework on time this term. Please don’t forget to sign your child’s Premier’s Reading Challenge sheet as they complete their reading each week.

Many thanks to the parents and grandparents who have volunteered to help in our classroom this term. We hope you are able to continue your involvement as the year progresses.

Please don’t forget to begin preparing your Easter hats for our Easter Parade on the last day of Term 1, Friday 7 April.

We wish all our SHN families a very happy Easter. Mr Hilly

HARMONY DAY—30 March 2017

Harmony Day is a day where we celebrate all the

cultures that Australia has and we recognise these

differences but we understand that we are all

“Australian”.

This year we will be conducting Harmony Day on

Thursday 30 of March.

All children are welcome to wear orange clothes

as a mufti to celebrate this day.

Children will be involved in a big picnic lunch

on the oval with all of their friends (just pack a

normal lunch for your kids or maybe something

a little special).

Mrs Hilly

Library Gossip

Welcome aboard the S.S. Bookaneer where all our books are treasure.

Changes are afoot in preparation for our annual Easter, Grandparents and Book Fair celebrations.

We are receiving even more cases this year to go on display. Our books are due to be piped on board Thursday 30 March so children will be making their “wish list” after that date. I will be choosing a selection of books from the display to go on our donation table for anyone who is able to donate a book to our library. A special donation sticker will be placed in that book with your child/children’s name so all will know of your generosity to the school. Your kidlings will also be able to borrow the donated book before anybody else. Look forward to seeing you here. If visitors or grandparents are up here early they are more than welcome to visit our treasure trove and leave a doubloon or two.

S3R Report In mathematics students have been working hard

to beat their personal best test score each week. Last week we worked on converting between fractions, decimals and percentages. This week we are learning about converting between different length units. Some students need additional revision for some topics. In these circumstances I will send home revision work in place of their usual mathematics homework so that students can really focus on their individual areas of need.

Year 6 have brought in their geography assignments this week. Mrs Otten and myself will be looking through the assignments and marking them according to the success criteria that was given to the students with the assignment instructions. They all look very impressive! Students were told that if they wanted to, they could share their radio presentation with the class once they were all marked.

In Visual Arts students have been exploring the topic of surrealism. Students are becoming creative analysers of famous works of art. They are also becoming good at incorporating surrealist elements into their own works of art.

The gothic genre continues to be an interesting stimulus for writing and text analysis. Students are creating believable and complex characters that will go on to form the main characters of their novel. Our back wall looks quite spooky with charcoal depictions of these characters staring down at us.

Have a lovely week!

Miss Ricketts

S3O Report Further to Miss Ricketts report…

The boys have been enjoying music classes learning about tone, colour and duration. I look forward to hearing the compositions they make in the coming weeks.

Year 6 have written letters to Mrs Pugh on things about their school they would like to improve. I can’t wait to see the outcome of some of these letters.

Students need to be reminded that they need their best behaviour and work ethics at all times, they are starting to let this slip as the term has gone on.

Year 5 students are welcome to attend weekly mathematics revision sessions on Tuesday’s 1

st half lunch and are asked to ask for help if they

need it. It would be beneficial for students to continue practicing their times tables as this knowledge is relied upon heavily in many other aspects of mathematics.

Thanks, Mrs Otten

1/2H Report 1/2H’s African safari wall is very full with lots of

animals. We have also made some jeeps which complete the jungle look. Thanks to Amelia and Veronica for helping me finish off the jeeps.

We have read The Twits and we are now onto Charlie and the Chocolate Factory written by the author Roald Dahl. We have lots of Roald Dahl books to read. 1/2H love his books.

Well done to those students who are getting no mistakes in their spelling tests and have moved up to the next level. I can see some people are ready to go up to the next year! Well done! For English we are looking at books that show belonging and acceptance. We have some great writers who wrote some imaginative and amusing stories about Noah No-way.

Maths we have been studying place value, half hour time, parts of 3D shapes and numberlines.

For History we are looking at Present and Past Family Life. So any old photos you may have from past generations would be great to discuss with your child.

1/2H are loving the recorder and make lots of noise which is coming together to make music.

Hope to see lots of people at our Easter hat parade and Book Fair. Please note that the Easter hats should be made at home.

Sincerely Mrs Hilly

3H Report Our class has been very busy preparing for our

assembly item which will be performed in the hall on Friday 31 March. Parents, carers and friends are very welcome to attend and it starts about 2pm. The children are getting very excited and have been asked to bring in some clothes that they would wear if they were camping EG- t shirt, jeans and joggers. As it is a PSSA day, all children will wear their sports uniform and then change into their clothes during lunch.

Another date to keep free is our Grandparents/ Easter Parade and Book Fair. This will be held on the last Friday of term—Friday 7 April. This year, 3H are making Easter hats at home so they can parade with them on the day.

Most children are to be congratulated on bringing in their completed homework each week.

Our topic talks are going really well with all of us learning something new every day.

This week we are learning our 5 times tables, and revising 2, 3 and 4. Any help at home would be greatly appreciated.

We are also looking at different ways to solve addition sums.

We have spent most of Term 1 looking at narratives and how they are written. Next week we will begin looking at persuasive writing.

Enjoy the rest of the week Mrs Patteson and Mrs Hollins

KH Report KH has very much enjoyed the first 9 weeks of

school and are settling well into routine.

Students have learned 21 sounds and are enjoying remembering the actions. Please continue to revise these sounds at home. It is good to practise all the sounds as we are learning to use them to read and write simple words. Please remember that the sounds are how we hear the letters as we read them in a word.

We have also learned 15 tricky words (3 each week) and are learning to say, read and write them in simple sentences. Lots of revision will help your child to remember them.

In maths, we have been doing lots of counting forwards and backwards, addition and subtraction, problem solving, identifying and making shapes as well as learning about length and measurement. All the students look forward to all the fun activities and games in maths!

Students are enjoying playing sport on Fridays. We also complete sport rotations each Tuesday for 1 hour. Sports uniform on Tuesdays is optional. On Friday, students are required to wear sports uniform and socks with joggers/sneakers.

The KH children have made some beautiful artworks. They are hanging up in our classroom windows. Please come and have a look before or after class time. We are all very proud of them!

The Easter Hat Parade is coming up on Friday, 7

April. Grandparents are invited to come along

for morning tea at 10.45am under the hall cola. At 11.30am, come and visit KH with your child and they can show you all their beautiful work! At 12pm you are all welcome to watch the children at the COLA in the Easter Hat Parade! All festivities will finish at 1pm, lunchtime followed by a sausage sizzle. The book fair will continue to 1.45pm in the library. Please remember that your children need to make an Easter hat together with the help of a family member at home. This should be sent to school before Friday, 7 April. The hat needs to be easy enough for your child to put it on by themselves. Decorated ice-cream buckets are a good idea as well as old hats with simple craft decorations. Please bring them in as soon as they are finished and I will keep them safe in my storeroom.

EASTER RAFFLE Our Easter Raffle collection is growing slowly but we still need more donations

please keep sending them in. The raffle will be drawn at the hat parade on

Friday 7 April, 2017. A book of raffle tickets has also been sent home today.

Thank you for your continued support.

4H Report The end of the Term is approaching very quickly!

It has been a pleasure having the opportunity to teach 4H during Mr Hollins absence this Term and getting to know the students as well as a few of the 4H parents.

4H have been investigating several mathematical concepts throughout the Term, focussing this week on 2D and 3D space and geometry, Time Units, and Measurement. We have also been focussing on our times tables to improve our addition, subtraction and division knowledge, focussing this week on our 8X tables.

This week we also started the spelling program Spellodrome. This program allows students to practice their spelling words through a number of organised activities, providing them with challenges and opportunities to improve on and extend their spelling knowledge.

In Geography we have been investigating Australia - its natural and man-made features, local area and neighbouring countries, while in PDHPE we have been discussing road safety and how to be responsible and safe pedestrians and cyclists.

This week we also discussed the artist Piet Mondrian and his artwork and influences, in Creative Arts. Students enjoyed creating their own Mondrian artworks which we will display in the classroom as they are completed.

It is pleasing to see many of the 4H students participating in PSSA sports each week and to have seen many participating in the swimming carnival a few weeks ago.

The coming weeks will continue to be very busy with the celebrations of Harmony Day on Thursday 30 March and Easter and Grand-parents Day the following week. I look forward to seeing all those wonderful hats!

A kind reminder that if your child is away from school for any reason, you need to contact the school or send in a note explaining why they are not at school.

Mrs Sargeant

KB Report Wow, haven’t the children done a fantastic job of

settling into school and its routines. Thank you to everyone for doing a great job of getting them ready and to school on time. We start our day with literacy and reading, so it is essential that your child is at school on time and ready to learn.

Can the blue folder please come into school everyday. The teachers place notes in these folders so that they are legible when they get home. Home readers are also placed in them to prevent damage. At the moment, these are being changed on their reading day, but I am trying to find additional opportunities to send home extra readers.

Please make sure your child can open all their containers for recess and lunch. If you are sending food in packets that they cannot open, either a small snip to help them rip it open in the corner, or tip the contents into a plastic labelled container.

We are going to start reading groups early in Term 2. If you are interested in helping out, can you please send me a note with your name, phone number and available days. Reading groups will take place on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. We will also be doing developmental groups on Friday after-noons when we do not have assembly. If you are free to help with an activity group, please also let me know.

We will be starting our first class project based learning experience in week 10. If you have any old newspaper or boxes (eg cereal boxes) lying around, could you please consider donating them to the classroom for the children to use.

In the upcoming holidays please make sure the children continue to practise their tricky words, sight words and sounds as well as get plenty of rest. They have worked hard this term, let’s together continue to set them up for even better things in Term 2.

Thanks Mrs Blume

2G Report Well Term 1 has certainly flown by! We have been

very busy in 2G and the children have become my Superheroes! I am so proud of the independent learning skills they are developing and the kind, caring people they are becoming.

The end of term is busy, so keep your eye on these

Newsletters, notes and listen to announcements so you don’t miss out on the fun!

We hope to see as many parents and grand-parents

as possible at our Grandparent’s Day, Easter Hat Parade and Book Fair on the last day of term. Start thinking of ideas for that special Easter hat and remember to invite the grand-parents to visit our classrooms.

Harmony Day is being held on Thursday 30 March

and the children can wear orange clothes. We will be doing activities about other cultures to reinforce the themes of tolerance and acceptance.

Thank you so much to the parents who have been

assisting with reading groups this term. It has been great having you visit our classroom. We still have room for an extra parent on Wednesdays or Thursdays. Please let me know if you are available and would like to help.

The children have been working hard on their

spelling with many children moving up levels already this term. Keep up this great work!

I am also so proud of those children who have

completed and remembered to bring in their Homework and Home Reading on time. They will receive a special treat at the end of term.

Happy Easter to all! Mrs Goodman

IM Report Incredible, our first term as 1Monsters is nearly over!

We have already learnt so much, Jolly Grammer, Writing, how to write letters, spelling strategies, measurement, length, adding, subtracting, songs, proper nouns, common nouns, verbs, vowels, consonants, celebrations, punctuations, height, seasons, sharing, caring, the list goes on…

The children have settled in really well and we are

working so hard. I am absolutely amazed at how fast they learn.

Thank you to everyone who has been consistently

handing in homework every week and congratula-tions on 1M’s avid readers. Our students are sooo eager to read and are consistently looking for their next home reader. Well done 1M!

Grandparents Day and our Annual Book Fair is

coming up on the last day of term. It would be great to see grandparents, mums and dads and any other relatives there on the day. We have also completed some brilliant art which is proudly on display in our classroom. Please feel free to have a look!

Harmony Day on March 30. Students can wear

orange and we will be having a school picnic on the top oval for lunch.

It has been wonderful listening to the children give

their news topic talks every week. Your children are gaining wonderful “talking” voices. The best week

was hearing all about “Our Families”!

Wishing all our families a wonderful Easter! Enjoy the break. Ms Mossfield

1B Report It is a pleasure to report that the students of 1B

have settled in beautifully to their new classroom environment.

A big congratulations to all of the students who are

consistently completing their homework, and doing their best to practise their spelling words each week. Well done to the students who are achieving high results in their spelling tests each week, and to those who are constantly improving. Hard work really does pay off.

In 1B we do a lot of reading, writing and listening.

Currently, students are mastering the use of nouns, verbs and adjectives in their writing. It is great to see so many of the students writing improving on a weekly basis. For English, we are looking at a range of books where the author ‘breaks the rules.’ These books are very entertaining and meaningful for the students, teaching them all about belonging and acceptance.

In mathematics we have been super busy studying

a range of different topics including place value, 2D shapes, addition, subtraction, equal groups, sharing, counting, picture graphs, capacity and mass. 1B and 1M join classes every Tuesday for maths, and have been placed in small, differentiated groups to target their individual needs. During this time, students are engaged in a range of different math topics, which have been covered in class, in an interactive and fun way. So far, this has been a great success, and we look forward to continuing with this next term.

As the end of term is approaching quickly, just a

reminder that Grandparents day, Book Fair and Easter Hat Parade are all on the last day of term. Easter Hats are to be made at home and bought in on the day. I hope to see you there.

Stage 2 Choir Report The Stage 2 Choir attended their first Combined Choir Rehearsal for the Blacktown Festival of the Performing Arts. Despite the heavy rain, we made it safely from Seven Hills North Public School to Shelley Public School with Vardys Road Public School sharing the bus to the venue. The students were well behaved despite the wild weather and were respectful to all students and staff on the excursion.

They sang beautifully with over 300 students and now confidently know 4 of the 11 choral pieces.

Our next combined rehearsal excursion to Shelley Public School is on Wednesday, 31 May. As it is a morning rehearsal, please come to school no later than 8.30am. We will meet in KH and then leave at 8.45am. Students are required to take a small bag, recess, a hat and their choir booklet. Please remember to pack a rain coat.

We will continue our choir rehearsals at school each Tuesday Lunchtime. Please remember that all students are to bring their folder with their music booklet every week. They are encouraged to continue their singing at home.

Well done on a fantastic rehearsal Stage 2 Choir!!

A message from the Uniform Shop… Do you have any old uniforms that no longer fit hiding in the back of your cupboard? Please think about donating these to our uniform shop for other families to purchase. Uniform Price Increase Uniform prices will increase from the beginning of Term 2 2017. New price lists will be available on the school website, from the front office and will be emailed out with this Newsletter. Old prices will be honoured up until the last day of term any new orders in Term 2 will need to pay the new prices. To offset the price increase we will no longer be stocking ‘non-emblem’ items e.g. grey shorts, navy cullottes, grey long pants, navy long pants and navy track pants. These can be bought from stores such as Target, Big W, Kmart, Best & Less and Lowes in school colours. These stores can supply these items for less than we can purchase them for. Navy Sport Shorts will still need to be purchased from the Uniform Shop. There are still some stocks in certain sizes of the ‘non- embelm’ items and these are marked ‘until stocks last’. If you have ordered one of these items and that item is no longer available, I will contact you on the phone number you provide on the order. I can be contacted on 0432 257 449.
