From the High School Principal

Every week, a popular digest of matters relating to education makes the rounds of the administrators in the building (and many, many other schools as well). While I do not necessarily like it as much as other portals to which I pay attention, every three or so weeks I come across something that seems to tap into some of the very concerns which occupy me at any given moment. Fre-quently these are tangential (begging the question of whether I read into articles what I may already be looking to find) but nothing quite helps reinforce thinking than to come across similar sentiment. This week I was moved by a summary to read an article on self-regulatory culture in schools. I am always skeptical about notions around self-regulation (not to be conflated with responsibility); perhaps too much Foucault has me convinced that authentic agency is easily compromised when one internalizes the policing mechanisms of the state (actually, I almost always read such articles but with the intention of ripping them to shreds). But the highlight that drew my attention to this article was a focus on developing trust over and above self-regulation. While self-regulation might be a rather obvious and likely byproduct of trust, I appreciated the emphasis of the conditions over and above the result. Adams et al. particularly noted “collective faculty trust in students” and “collective student trust in faculty” as being key indicators. Inevitably I began to wonder what levels of trust we might find in our high school.

Trust in schools tends to move beyond emotional perceptions centered on honesty and caring even if these are valuable traits. In addition to this personal integrity, University of Chicago professors Anthony Bryk and Barbara Schneider argue that schools re-quire a level of relational trust that involves obligations, expectations and, as a result, a set of mutually related interdependencies. Relational trust, they maintain, requires that—regardless of differences in the level of formal power—“all participants remain de-pendent on one another to achieve desired outcomes and to feel empowered.” Their work suggests that not only does a school achieve but that personal and professional well-being require trust and reliance in the core competencies of one another. A strong student, then, cannot realize their full potential independently but only through a trust in the intentions and skills of their teacher. The most capable of teachers, too, cannot enjoy a complete sense of satisfaction unless they have a faith in the habits and attributes of their students.

I have been wondering about trust here in the high school in these last months. I do not find an environment where trust is absent but I also question to what degree trust might be fully enjoyed. In particular, though, it is about whether we are collectively, as stated above, realizing our desires and self-satisfied in the process. Do faculty believe in a vision for the high school that I hold (for that matter, am I effective at conveying what that vision might be?)? Do students believe that teachers listen to them? Do teachers believe students can be counted on to complete their work? Do faculty believe that I actively listen to their concerns? Do students believe their teachers are good at their craft? Do I grant sufficient autonomy to faculty? Do teachers believe in the integri-ty of their students? If we are not able to answer all of these questions in the affirmative then we can realize neither our institution-al nor our personal goals. In these unsettled times in Caracas, trust can be elusive. Whether it is what one hears from the mouths of politicians or what one expects to find on the shelf at the local Plazas, there is more uncertainty that certainty. Perhaps the need for collective trust in the high school, then, will never be greater. With high collective trust, Adams et al. tell us, we engage in shared risk taking and enjoy rhizomatic influence that best allow us not only to reach our current potential but to improve even against the backdrop of a diffi-cult external environment. In the end, our true engagement with building further collective, relational trust might well be less to do with self-regulation and much more to do with self-realization. In a world that can be hard to believe, trust in one another may—with some irony—just be the most certain asset we can possess. ___________________________________________________ The Marshall Memo. <h p://www.marshallmemo.com/> For instance, the very excellent Arts and Le er Daily—my personal homepage for many years. <www.aldaily.com> Adams, Curt et al.  “Self‐Regulatory Climate:  A Social Resource for Student Regula on and Achievement.”  Teachers College Rec‐ord. 117.2 (2015): 1‐28. ECA hosted the MS VANAS Boys Basketball and Girls Soccer tournament last week. After winning both of their

games on the first day, our boys basketball team had several games that came down to a 1- or 2- point differential -

and not in ECA's favor - on day two. The guys worked hard, playing four games that were are practically back-to-back

over the course of the final day. The boys ended the day in 4th place overall. A note of congratulations to Mateo

Guerrrero (grade 8) who was selected to the All-Tournament team by the VANAS coaches. On the girls'

side, ECA came into the final day of the tournament in 2nd place. They took on CICV for a chance to play in the tour-

nament final, but after a score of 1-1 the girls had to go into 10-minutes of extra time. Already exhausted, they lost on

penalty shots and headed into the consolation bracket for 3rd place. The British School (TBS) came on strong and

refreshed but our ECA girls stuck with them and came out of the game with a 1-0 victory and the 3rd place tro-

phy. Congratulations to Laura Franco and Lizzie Bence (both in grade 7) for being selected to the All-Tournament
