Settlers moved to Oregon. They had peace with the
Nez Perce tribe. Things changed when gold was
discovered. The gold miners wanted the Indians
to move to Idaho.
Chief Joseph tried to talk to them. The tribe did not want to go. The fighting
began. Chief Joseph led the tribe to Canada. There
was fighting all the way.

Before the tribe got to Canada, they ran out of
food and blankets. Many were killed. Chief Joseph
surrendered.
He grew up to be the Chief of the Nez Perce
Indians. They lived in the Wallowa part of Oregon.

He was born in 1840. His father was the Chief of
the Nez Perce. As a boy, he learned how to ride horses, hunt and fish.
Chief Joseph made many speeches. He spoke with two presidents - President
Hayes and President T. Roosevelt. He wanted peace
and freedom for his tribe and all American Indians.
He was a great man!

Glossary:Nez Perce: It is a tribe of American Indians that lived in the northeast corner of Oregon.settlers: They are people who move to a new place to live, usually where there are few people living there.gold miners: They were people who came looking for gold. They would work in a mine to dig for it. They would look for gold in rivers or streams.surrender: It is the act of agreeing to stop fighting because you know you cannot win. It means to give up control of something.
Activities1. Using a highlighter or a yellow crayon, mark he sentence that tells what Chief Joseph wanted most of all. Hint: Look at page 7.
2. Using a pencil, underline where the Nez Perce Indian tribe lived in the beginning.
3. Read the glossary meaning for “surrender.” This book tells that Chief Joseph surrendered because they had run out of food and blankets. Many were killed. On a separate piece of paper, write three more reasons why you think Chief Joseph surrendered. Read your answers to your teacher or your partner.
