To Help France…

¨ They aided us during the Revolution

¨ Treaty still bound U.S. and France together as allies

¨ They looked to our example for their own revolution

¨ Jefferson favored helping

Or Not...

¨ Britain was our biggest trading partner

¨ Britain was against France– Too risky to fight them

again¨ Hamilton favored not

helping

Washington decided that we would be neutralCongress passed a law forbidding aid to either side

Four Corners- What do you think?

1. Agree that we should stay neutral because we need England as a trading partner.

2. Agree that we should stay neutral because we cannot survive another war.

3. Agree that we should aid France because they helped us with the Revolution.

4. Agree that we should aid France because a treaty still bound us together, and we need to keep our word.

If you agree with neutrality…You Agree With:

¨ They aided us during the Revolution. Without their help, we could have easily lost.

¨ A treaty still binds U.S.

and France together as allies, and treaties are legally binding documents.

Questions to Answer:

¨ Don’t we owe it to them to return the support? Wouldn’t you help a friend of they had supported you earlier?

¨ Isn’t it wrong to break such an agreement? How would other countries respect you as a new country if you do not keep your word?

If you agree with aiding France…You Agree With:

¨ Britain is our biggest trading partner. Aiding France could have a devastating effect on our new economy.

¨ Britain has joined many other European countries in a war against France. Siding with the French would make them our enemies. We had a difficult time winning our Revolution, and might not be able to survive another one. Plus, we are in huge debt.

Questions to Answer:

¨ What would we do if Britain refuses to trade with us as a result of aiding France?

¨ How are we going to fight and finance another war?

he served as a symbol of national unity for 8 years¨ His farewell address provided advice and

warnings for the country:– Benefits of federal government– Against political parties– Importance of morality– Maintain stable credit– Policy of neutrality– Against over-powerful militaries
