All that was asked of 18-year-old

Sidney Crosby was to help save the National Hockey League. After canceling the entire 2004-2005 season because of a contract dispute, the league somehow had to create excitement to win back its disheartened fans. Crosby, the most heavily hyped rookie in decades, was just the ticket.

“The Next Great One,” “Sid the Kid,” “The Franchise,” and Baby Legs.” as he as been called, began skating at age 3.

• Students read text independently while teacher conducts one-to-one reading conferences with each student.

• Teacher convenes the group for a follow-up discussion that includes one or two teaching points.

• Teacher takes a running record on two students while the other students read independently.

• Teacher provides a group prompt for responding to the reading on yesterday’s guided reading text.

• Each student composes orally a personal response to the teacher’s prompt.

• Each student writes a response in a writing journal, and the teacher conducts one-to-one writing conferences with each student.
