How Does a Managing Editor Improve the Quality of a Journal?

Coordinating the Collaborative Effort by acting as a liaison among: Editor Journal Manager (at Publisher) Publisher Authors Peer Reviewers Society/Association

The Managing Editor is the point person among all these.

The Managing Editor has time to research/explore and resolve situations/issues for which the Editor may not have time.

By fulfilling this role, the Managing Editor allows the Editor to spend more time working on the substance of the journal (e.g., editing, reviewer selection, special issue considerations, etc.).

How Does a Managing Editor Improve the Quality of a Journal?

Ensure that the Journal’s Goals and Mission are Being Met

Understand core readership and help editor weed out manuscripts that do not offer anything new for that readership.

If this is a society journal, understand the political implications of potential “hot button” submissions.

Help maintain balance between journal growth and focus on mission. (We want to increase readership and improve the Impact Factor, but at what cost?)
