Biographies

John Sorey, Mayor, City of Naples

John Sorey served as a member of the Naples City Council from February 2004 and was reelected on January 29, 2008, for a second term. He was elected to Vice-Mayor February 2010 to January 2012 and was elected unopposed as Mayor on February 15, 2012.

John is also Executive Director of the Naples Players, a community theatre providing quality performances at an affordable price.

The founder and owner of Management Support Systems, Inc., Sorey has been associated with numerous companies - as owner, consultant, and employee, and in consumer and industrial products, distribution, and service sectors. From 1988 to 1998 when he sold the company, he was the owner of Spectrum Corporation, a formulator, blender and packager of specialty lubrications. He was also one of the founders of Airgas, which is a publicly traded industrial gas and welding supply company ; he served on the Executive Committee and Board from 1985 to 1992. In addition, he has been very involved in the non-profit sector.

John holds an M.B.A. from the University of Tennessee, a B.S. in Business Administration f rom Tennessee Technologica l Univers ity, and completed the Har vard Program for Management Development.

A veteran, Sorey is a decorated Army Airborne Infantry Lieutenant serving in Vietnam with the 9th Infantry Division, 1967.

Mayor Sorey is married to Delores, has a son, daughter, and twin grandsons.

Sandy Parker, Government Committee Chair, L eague of Women Voters

Sandy (GNL Masters Class X) held executive positions in accounting, investor relations and corporate f inance during a 26-year corporate career. She is a former president of the League of Women Voters of Collier County, its current Government Committee chair, and lectures on Florida government at the Frances Pew Hayes Center for Lifelong Learning at Hodges University. Sandy also serves on the board of First Book-Collier County. She was recognized as a Woman of Achievement by the American Association of University Women Greater Naples Chapter in 2011.

Jennifer J. Edwards, Super visor of Elections, Collier County

Original ly f rom Kentucky, Jennifer earned her Bachelor’s f rom the University of Kentucky and her Masters from Eastern Kentucky University. Jennifer has served as the Supervisor of Elections since 2000 and prior to that, held several key positions during her 13-year tenure with the Collier County Manager’s Agency, including Budget Analyst, Assistant to the

County Manager and Human Resources Director.

Jennifer is a State Certif ied Supervisor of Elections and was awarded her master Florida Certif ied Elections Professional (MFCEP) designation from the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections (FSASE). Jennifer has served as the Treasurer, Secretary, President Elect, President, and Past President of the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections (FSASE). Jennifer has served on several boards throughout Collier County including the United Way of Collier County’s Board of Directors from 2001-2007. Jennifer is a graduate of Leadership Collier and Leadership Marco.

Jennifer has l ived in Collier County since 1984. She is married to Ronnie Edwards, and they have two children and three grandchildren.

Mark Isackson, Director of Corporate Finance and Management Ser vices, Collier County Manager’s Office

For over 25 years, between 1985 and 2002, and 2004 to the present, Mark spent his professional career in local government, serving a number of municipal organizat ions in var ious administrat ive and management capacities. During a ten-year span between 1992 and 2002, he served as the City (Vil lage) Manager for four municipalit ies - three in Il l inois and one in Michigan. In March of 2004, Mark joined Collier County Government as an Analyst in the Office of Management and Budget. Currently, he is in charge of Corporate Financial and Management

Planning under County Manager Leo Ochs.

Mark has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Northern Il l inois University (1984).

Donna Fiala, Chair, Board of Collier County Commissioners

Donna moved from the West Side of Cleveland, Ohio to Collier County in 1974 and sti l l l ives in the same house. She worked for Naples Airlines/Provincetown Boston Airlines for 12 years as the National Sales Manager ; she later worked at the Marco Island Marriott as an Insurance Sales Manager. Donna became the Director of Community Relations for Naples Community Hospital, and was employed there from 1987 to 2000. She resigned to run for the off ice of County Commissioner, District 1, and has held that position since.

Donna has 5 children, al l of whom graduated from the Collier County Public School System. She has been active in the community, serving as President of the Naples Junior Woman’s Club within a few years of moving to Collier. She was active in the Marco Island Kiwanis Club, Marco Island Chamber of Commerce, East Naples Kiwanis Club, Woman’s Republican Club of Naples Federated, Republican Executive Committee, and Public Relations Association of Collier County (President). She has served on the Board of Directors for various organizations including the Naples Area Chamber of Commerce, The Botanical Garden,

President’s Council, Greater Naples Civic Association, Golden Gate Chamber of Commerce, Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed (CREW), Council on Aging, Collier Naplescape, United Arts Council, and Collier County Life Jacket Loaner Program.

Donna was elected Commissioner of District 1 in 2000 and ran unopposed in 2004 and 2008 for re-election. In 2003 and 2008, she served as Vice-Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners and served as the Board’s l iaison to the County Government Productivity Committee. In 2003 and 2009, she served as Chairman of the Board and the Tourist Development Council. Commissioner Fiala is currently a member of the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) Board of Directors to help guide the agency in adopting bylaw changes, monitoring f inances and making other decisions to direct the association. She is currently Chair of the Board of Collier Commissioners.

Larr y Honig, Marco Island City Council

Larry is currently on the Marco Island City Council in addition to operating his business, RETAILHEDGE®.

His previous professional experience includes: SVP Store Operations & Direct-to-Customer for Abercrombie & Fitch, Columbus , Ohio; Chairman & CEO, Centerplate, Inc. , Spartanburg, South Carolina; Managing Director, eHatchery LLC, Atlanta, Georgia; Chairman & CEO, Edison Brothers Stores Co., St. Louis, Missouri; SVP Marketing & Sales, Alliant Foodservice Inc., Chicago, Il l inois; Chief Information Officer – Federated Department Stores

(Now Macy’s), Atlanta, Georgia; Vice Chairman – May Department Stores (Now Macy’s), St. Louis, Missouri; Partner, McKinsey & Company, Chicago, Il l inois.

His prior service on Boards of Directors include: Angelica Corporation, Industrial Uniforms, May Department Stores (Now Macy’s Inc.), St. Paul Companies (Now Travelers) Insurance, Edison Brothers Stores, and Centerplate Inc., Food & Beverage Service. Larry has an MBA from Harvard Business School, an MA from University of Texas, and a BA, BS from Washington & Lee University.

Linda Penniman, Naples City Council Member

Linda Penniman was sworn into off ice on February 19, 2014. Council Member Penniman and her husband of 47 years, Nick, moved to Naples in 1976 and both immediately began volunteering in the community. Penniman was GNL’s Class VII, and subsequently served a board position for four years, as well being a member of two committees. Linda was appointed to the City's Planning Advisory Board and the County's Coastal Advisory Committee; she is past chair of the Moorings Property Owners' Association, on which she served for 6 years. Linda is currently on the board of the Naples Council of World Affairs and the Collier Citizens' Council where she chaired a forum on

beach renourishment. She is a charter member of the Southwest Women's Giving Circle; she and a friend have provided over 750 backpacks for the homeless in Collier County.

The Honorable Ramiro Manalich, Judge, L ee County 20th Judicial Circuit

Judge Mañalich was appointed to Circuit Bench by Governor Crist in 2008 and elected without opposition both at the County and Circuit levels. He has been admitted to practice in Florida, Colorado and Wisconsin and before the US District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin, Middle District of Florida and the 11th Circuit US Court of Appeals. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Wisconsin and Florida Bars. Judge Mañalich

has served on the Florida Bar Corrections Committee in 1988 and is a current member of the Florida Bar Local Government Law Section. He was previously Board Certif ied in City, County and Local Government Law. As a member of the Collier County Bar, he served on the Board of Directors from 1993-1997 and later was selected to be Secretary, Treasurer, President-elect and President (2000-01).

In 2002, Judge Mañalich received the Collier County Bar Association Distinguished Service Award. He served on the 20th Judicial Circuit Local Steering Committee on Professionalism. He has also served on the Judicial Independence Committee, Legal Aid Society Committee, Pro Bono Committee and Public Guardianship Committee. In 2003 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Trial Lawyers Section of the Collier County Bar and is a member of the Inns of Court, Collier County Chapter.

Judge Mañalich's wife, Jane, is the Director of Benefits for the Collier County School District. They have two children, Raquel and Gabriel la.

Manny Garcia, Editor, Naples Daily News

Prior to joining the Naples team, Manny was Executive Editor and General Manager of el Nuevo Herald in Miami, the most inf luential Spanish-language news operation in the hemisphere. During his watch, el Nuevo Herald was the only Spanish-language newspaper to be a Pulitzer-f inalist for its coverage of the earthquake in Haiti, along with The Miami Herald .

Manny also spent 18 years at The Miami Herald , where as a reporter and editor, his investigations have changed Florida law, led to the arrests of numerous public off icials, ousted a sitt ing congressman and helped free a man

serving life for murders he did not commit. His projects have helped win an IRE award, Goldsmith, and Pulitzer prizes. Manny serves on the board of Investigative Reporters & Editors, American Society of News Editors and Florida Society of News Editors.

Kellie Burns, News Anchor, NBC2 News

Kellie Burns anchors NBC2 News at 5:00, News at 5:30 and News at 6:00 . She started at NBC2 News in 1994 as a reporter, working her way up to Collier County Bureau Chief, weekend anchor and, f inally, primary anchor in 1996. Her television career began at the age of nine as an anchor of an award-winning chi ldren’s show, Action News for Kids , in her hometown of Binghamton, New York.

Kellie’s award-winning career includes two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and several awards from the Florida Associated Press . In 2011, she

took f irst place in the Hard News Feature Category for her coverage in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.

Kellie spends numerous hours helping non-profits in Southwest Florida. She regularly hosts the Neighborhood Health Clinic Gala, the Lee-Collier County Heart Ball, Magic Under the Mangroves for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, the Southwest Florida Wine and Food Festival, and Night at the Nest benefitt ing Florida Gulf Coast University Athletics.

Kellie splits her t ime between Fort Myers and Chicago with her husband, ED, daughter, Elle, and step-daughter, Kara.

Brent Batten, Columnist, Naples Daily News

Prior to writing his thrice-weekly column in the Naples Daily News , Brent Batten was the paper’s city editor for six years. He also worked for the newspaper as the Lee County bureau chief from1987 to 1990 and was a reporter covering police and courts, starting in 1985.

Before moving to Naples, Mr. Batten was a reporter for the Zanesvil le, Ohio, Times-Recorder newspaper. Born and raised in Ohio, Mr. Batten is a graduate of Ohio State University.

Tom Weschler, Police Chief of Naples

Chief Weschler began with the Naples Police and Fire Department in September 2007 as the Integrity Control Manager. He was appointed Chief of Police and Fire Services in October 2008. Prior to his appointment, he served for 30 years with the Miami Beach Police Department, retiring as a Major in 2007.

Chief Weschler brings with him extensive experience in the area of law enforcement. His career includes assignments as a Major Crimes Detective, Juvenile Off icer and the Narcotics Unit. His Supervisory and Command

assignments include Patrol, supervision of the Homicide Unit, Commander of Internal Affairs and the Training Division.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Florida International University and an A.A. from Miami-Dade College. He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Society of Human Resource Management, Fraternal Order of Police, SouthWest Florida Police Chief 's Association and Florida Police Chief 's Association. He is Co-Chair of the Regional 6 Drug Enforcement Strike Force, a member of the board of directors of the Shelter of Abused Women & Children, and a Leadership Collier Graduate. Chief Weschler was SWF Police Chiefs ' Association’s 2012 Outstanding Chief Executive of the Year.

Kevin Rambosk, Sheriff, Collier County

Rambosk has been Collier County Sherif f since 2009; prior to being elected sherif f, he served many roles in the Sherif f ’s Off ice and the City of Naples, including: Chief of Staff, Sherif f-Elect,Executive Officer, Undersherif f, Chief of Operations, and Captain of the Organized Crime Division, 2003. Rambosk was appointed Naples City Manager in November 1999 and retired from the City of Naples in 2003. He was appointed to Naples Chief of Police & Emergency Services in 1995 after joining the force in 1978. Rambosk was appointed Assistant City Manager in 1993; he was selected Interim Director of Community Services in 1991. Rambosk was appointed police off icer in

1978 and promoted through the ranks to Captain of Patrol Operations. He also served in the Internal Security Division of the New Jersey Sports and Exhibition Authority.

His community service includes serving on the boards of directors for many organizations, including: the Florida Sherif f ’s Association, Collier Senior Resource Center, The Shelter for Abused Women and   Children, Youth Haven, Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce, and Leadership Collier. He has served as Vice-Chair of the Substance Abuse Coalit ion of Collier County. Rambosk is a past member of the Boy Scouts of America, The Community Blood Center, and The Juvenile Justice Council.

Sherif f Rambosk is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Safety Administration from William Paterson University and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Nova University.

Julie Belle White-Newman

A Minnesota escapee, Julie Belle White-Newman retired to Naples in 2008 after a 43-year career in education. She is a member of GNL Masters Class XIV.

Julie is now a 20th Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem working as a court-appointed advocate for abused, neglected or abandoned children. Julie has served on a number of GNL Board committees, including Community Services and the Twentieth Anniversary celebration.

Julie has four stepchildren and she, and her husband, John, have six grandchildren.

Jim Rideoutte

Jim Rideoutte is a native of Columbia, SC, where he received a BS from the University of South Carolina. He is a retired Internal Revenue Service executive.

Jim is a graduate of GNL Masters Class II and was the 2003 winner of the Parke Wright III Award (Distinguished Leadership Award) for Community Service. In 2011, he was the recipient of the Naples City Council “Sam Noe Award” for exceptional volunteer service to the City.

He is currently Chair of the Naples Municipal Airport Authority.

Norm Feder

Mr. Feder was Collier County’s f irst Transportation Division Administrator in August, 2000. Norm built over 240 lane miles of new roads, established the Collier Area Transit (CAT) System, increased outsourcing and enhanced operations and maintenance of the transportation systems. Today, the backlog of deficient roadways has been addressed and travel t imes have been reduced on beautifully landscaped roads that enhance property values and the character of our community. During the past two years before his retirement from the County, Mr. Feder oversaw the consolidation of the Transportation

Divis ion and the Community Development and Environmental Ser vices Division into the current Growth Management Division.

He is currently Chair of the North Naples Fire District.

Prior to working for Collier County, Norm started in 1986 as the District One Director of Planning and Programs as well as the Director of the Southwest Area Office for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in Ft. Myers.

Norm served as a Governmental Analyst in the Governor’s Off ice, was a Senior Planner in the former Division of State Planning and a Planner for the City of Tallahassee. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Studies from Northeastern University in Boston, MA and a Master’s Degree in Planning from Florida State University. Norm is a member of the American Institute of Certif ied Planners and a Class VII graduate of Greater Naples Leadership.
