Slide 28 Amanda’s Plan

MethodHow to beginWhat I Need

Use Universal Job MatchTo search advertised JobsAttend job fairsBuild a network of friends, relatives who can tell me of possible leads or be a reference for me.

• Use universal job match--How to begin: First of all

Amanda will need to register with the web site. She will need to visit https://www.gov.uk/jobsearch and click on register with Universal Job match

-- She could consult various different places for assistance with UJM if she needs help. You tube has several how to videos, she could use the guide from this course titled “How to Use Universal Jobmatch”. Many libraries have drop in job clubs where she could go for help or they may be able to direct you where to go.

-- Once Amanda is registered she will need to create her profile and upload her CV. Keep in mind, the program will match jobs against the words you use in the skills section so as a suggestion you may want to do a job search for “teacher” and have a look at the list of skills that come up. You can do this by searching for teacher jobs by entering “teacher” into the job title search box, click on a job and then click “review my skills” tab locate on the left. This will show you a list of recommended skills.

2. What I need:-- a CV-- A personal skills list: this should

have skills on it from the national careers service as well as from UJM

-- Three references with contact details

2. Attend job fairs-- How to begin: Inquire at local

libraries, Google “career fairs in my local area”, the local authority, career centres (job centre, careers wales etc.), post on facebook, look at the web site for the school she is interested in as they may have something posted about a job fair.

--What I need:- CV- Cover letter- A script to talk with potential

employers

3. How to Begin: Amanda can make a list of all the friends that she has at the moment including relatives and neighbours. To track down former friends and acquaintances, try the internet or searching facebook. It would be a good idea to practice how she is going to approach them for leads and how she will ask them if they will be a reference for her. Remember a professional reference of a character reference must be from someone who has known you for 5 years.

-- What I need:- A script to talk to these people

to inquire about jobs and ask if they would be a reference for you

- A CV to send them if necessary
