2. Check your equipment: Make sure the lawn mower, weed-whacker and the like are primed and ready, blades sharp-ened, tank refilled and so on. 3. Rake it in. Get rid of last year’s dead leaves and twigs that
can keep your lawn from soaking up the sun. Consider com-posting the debris. 4. Beating the pests: Fortunately, protect-ing your yard against insect-borne diseases such as chikungunya, West Nile virus and Eastern equine en-
cephalitis (EEE) does not have to be a chal-lenge, nor does it have to involve chemical sprays. Instead, you can use environmen-tally friendly solu-tions to keep bugs at bay while enjoying the outdoors. For example, Dyna-

backyard, so be sure it reflects your style and makes a state-ment. Keep in mind the primary use of your outdoor space and remember to think about mosqui-to control as it relates

The Carbon Coun-ty Lion/Lioness Fair Association, Inc. was created in January 1999. The Association is comprised of the Bowmanstown/Par-ryville Lions, Franklin
About TheCarbon County
Fair
Township Lions, Le-highton Area Lioness Lions, Mahoning Li-ons, Palmerton Lions, West Penn Lions and the Jim Thorpe Lion-
ess Clubs. The Associ-ation became incorpo-rated in June 1999 and is a Non-Profit Organi-zation 501 (c) (3). The Association desired that the fair benefit the hard-working youth in Carbon County and West Penn Township. The fair was created to showcase the ani-mals and projects of the youth in Carbon County & West Penn Township and provide the recognition and positive reinforcement that they so greatly deserve. In addition, the Fair assists the participating Lion and
Lioness Clubs to raise funds used to support community projects, sight programs, and other Lions projects. In our 16th year now, the Carbon County Lion/Lioness Fair As-sociation, Inc. would like to thank everyone for supporting our ef-forts, including our volunteers, fairgoers and particularly, those businesses who are Diamond Level Spon-sors. Re-establishing a Fair in Carbon Coun-ty was a huge task. Only through faith in ourselves, Carbon
County & West Penn Township (Schuylkill County) residents and businesses & faith in our Lion and Lioness Organizations, were
we able to reinstate the fair for the de-serving youth of our County. In 2001, the association expanded the Open Classes of
the judged exhibits to increase competition by including resi-dents from West Penn Township (Schuylkill
County). The Associa-tion has a great sense of accomplishment in this fair. We hope that everyone enjoys their visit.

Quiet Valley’sHeritage Craft Day
Quiet Valley Living
Historical Farm will feature the 10th annu-al Heritage Craft Day on Saturday, August 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Heritage Craft persons will demon-strate traditional craft skills of the 1800s throughout the day. There will be hands-on opportunities for visitors who wish to try out some of these crafts for themselves. D e m o n s t r a t i o n s such as spinning, weaving, wheat weav-
ing, bobbin lace, horn work, pottery and blacksmithing will take place. The pur-pose of Heritage Craft Day is to provide a greater awareness of these historic folk crafts that were essen-tial to everyday living in previous genera-tions. This is a won-derful chance for indi-viduals, families and children to explore the exciting world of tra-ditionalContinued on Page 15

Page 14 crafts. The crafters are under tents in case of rain. The schedule is subject to change. A presentation of traditional toys and games will take place and visitors will be able to try out various samples for some old fashion fun. A chil-dren’s area will offer the younger set an opportunity to craft a simple toy or rag doll for themselves. Bonnie Scott, our master pup-peteer, will teach chil-dren puppet making. Heritage Craft Day,
a part of Quiet Valley’s summer “Art from the Heart” series, is sup-ported by a Pennsyl-vania Partners in the Arts Project Stream grant. Heritage Craft Day is included in the reg-ular admission price of $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children ages 3 – 12 and children two and under are free. Farm tours are avail-able throughout the day on Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The bake oven will be in operation. There will also be wagon rides for a small fee, weather permitting.
Farm and event are open rain or shine. Ar-rive by 2:15 to see all parts of the farm tour. All funds raised go to support Quiet Valley Living Histor-ical Farm, a 501(c) (3) non-profit, education-al corporation. Quiet Valley is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of rural life of the 18th and 19th centuries. The historic farm mu-seum is open to the
general public from the third Saturday in June through Labor Day Monday, closed Mondays except La-bor Day. Also, open select Spring and Fall Saturdays; Major fundraising events are held in May, October and December. Tours for schools and groups are by reservation. For more information visit our website www.qui-etvalley.org or call the farm at 570.992.6161.
