Support for Key Stage 4 and 5

Ofsted’s Common Inspection Framework highlights a stronger focus on tracking students’ activity after they leave school and whether they have been supported to develop the employability, social, personal and vocational skills they will need for sustained employment or further training. At PTP we support schools to widen their curriculum offer to address these changes and place themselves in the best position for inspection, whilst offering a programme of learning that supports the individual needs of their students and maximises their opportunities for success and achievement.

PTP has extensive experience of working with schools to deliver programmes and specialised sessions within Key Stage 4 and at Post 16. Our Ofsted Inspection graded us as ‘Outstanding’ in our work with partners, including schools and community groups.

Our direct links with employers, other training providers, Local Enterprise Partnerships and Local Authorities provide us with a large network of professionals to draw upon to help us support your school and offer high quality meaningful work experience placements for your students.

We currently offer qualifications at Level 1, 2 and 3 in a broad range of vocational areas including Business Administration, Accounts, Customer Service, Retail, Travel, Hospitality and Catering, Engineering, Health and Social Care (Adult Care, Early Years Care), Warehouse and Distribution and Media.

We can put together bespoke programmes which students can complete over one or two days per week for an academic year or longer. These will be delivered by PTP’s fully trained, qualified and sector competent staff. Our flexible approach allows us to complement an existing school timetable and accommodate students whose timetable is reduced.

We aim for all our qualifications to contribute to schools’ Progress 8 and league table results.

“Partnerships with employers and other organisations are outstanding. PTP is very good at customising training to respond to employers’ needs. Employers put a high value on PTP’s extremely good partnership work. PTP plays a leading role in developing very effective collaborative strategies in the region to promote and improve work-based learning. Learners benefit from the good local links PTP has developed with schools, local authorities, support services, job centres and voluntary groups. “

Frequently asked questions

How much would a package of training cost for our students?

We are aware of the challenges schools face in ensuring that they achieve the best outcomes for students within budgetary restrictions and so we will ensure our fees are fair and competitive. The cost to schools will be dependent on a number of factors including the length of the programme, the qualifications selected, the number of students referred and the delivery arrangements. PTP’s 14-19 Programme Manager will discuss costs with the school to ensure they represent value for money.

You may wish to consider referring as a consortium or partnership with other schools to ensure group sizes are maintained and therefore the costs to deliver the courses are kept to a minimum.

Are registration and certification for qualifications included in the costs?

Yes the final cost, which will be detailed in your service level agreement, will include registration and certification fees.

If a student leaves our school early will we still be charged?

Charging and payment arrangements will be discussed as part of the service level agreement. We suggest that termly payments are arranged. Charges will be dependent on the point in the term at which the student leaves.

What support is available to students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities?

Our teaching staff undergo training to support students with learning difficulties/disabilities. Students’ particular needs, including behavioural challenges, will be explored during their induction and initial assessment. Support measures will be detailed in an individual learning plan and confirmed with the home school. We would request that any Section 139a documentation etc is included with the referral paperwork to support this process.

How many students can you deliver to in a group?

Our ideal group size is ten as this allows students to interact with fellow pupils while benefiting from sufficient one to one teacher-learner time. We can work with smaller groups and our maximum class size is twelve.

Can we refer students throughout the academic year?

Ideally students should start at set points during the academic year but we are aware that this may not always be possible. We would need to discuss how the student’s start date impacts on their guided learning hours and any qualification achievement to ensure it is viable in the timeframe available. However, we would try our best to accommodate the needs of the school and student.

16

Frequently asked questions

How are schools kept informed of students’ progress towards their qualifications?

As a minimum schools receive formal feedback on each student’s status via a termly report which will indicate progress towards the relevant qualifications, changes in attitude, behaviour and development of personal, social and employability skills. The report will also contain attendance and punctuality data. Our delivery teams will be on hand to liaise with the school throughout the programme to provide more informal feedback as and when required.

The 14-19 Programme Manager will hold regular stakeholder meetings with schools to ensure our programme is adaptive and responsive and continues to meet their needs.

Where will delivery take place?

Normally delivery will take place at the student’s local PTP centre. However, some or all of the elements of the student’s programme may be delivered on site at the school, subject to group sizes. Delivery arrangements will be discussed and agreed during the student referral process.

Can you support students with transport costs?

We can support students with transport costs where delivery will take place at a PTP centre.

How will you manage students entitled to free school meals?

Students who are eligible for free school meals will receive vouchers from PTP to support this need. Students will receive vouchers for their days with us in centre and while on placement. We will source vouchers which are accepted in most retail outlets to ensure students can purchase a healthy and well balanced lunch. Costs for free school meals will be included in the service level agreement.

How will arrangements be contracted?

Each school has a signed service level agreement with agreed responsibilities of all parties, programme elements and agreed timescales.

Further support for students

Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEAIG)

On-going impartial CEIAG is offered to all students on vocational learning programmes to support schools in meeting IAG obligations as outlined in the Gatsby benchmark and to help address barriers to participation. These sessions include an explorative discussion at the start of programme to ensure that the selected course is appropriate and meets the student’s expectations and to produce a career action plan. We can also provide engaging activities to improve personal, social and employability skills (CV writing, interview skills) .

IAG will be delivered by Level 3 or Level 4 IAG qualified tutors who have extensive experience of working in schools. PTP currently hold the matrix standard which reflects the high quality of IAG on offer.

PTP will utilise links with partner support agencies to address barriers to participation and this will be informed by any existing or emerging pastoral support arrangements in school. Needs, including learning styles, will be assessed at the start of each student’s course and used to formulate and monitor progress towards an Individual Learning Plan which will be shared with the school.

We can offer one to one, face to face careers interviews with students in Key Stage 4 and Post-16, either as a one off or reoccurring throughout the year. These will be delivered by fully qualified staff and designed to support your in house IAG processes .

Work Experience

PTP believe that meaningful work experience opportunities are key in reinforcing and developing the skills and knowledge students develop through vocational learning. All students completing a full year programme will have a work placement offered as part of their Individual Learning Plan. Work placements will be sourced from our existing network of employers. Planning work experience will be an early element of the programme to allow time for the student and employer to define their expectations of the process, agree activities on placement and determine student objectives and learning aims.

Students will complete a Work Experience Log Book which includes planning their work experience, a journal of daily activities and new knowledge/skills and post placement reflection. Work experience will be continually linked back to the student’s Career Progression Plan.

Work experience can be offered in a block placement or one day per week over a longer period to fit with the student’s programme of learning and the home school’s preference. The duration of work experience will also be dependent on these factors, however, we will ensure that enough time is spent on placement to give the student a real sense of how the world of work operates in their chosen sector and an opportunity to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding.

Careers Events

PTP have been involved in planning and delivering careers events for a number of years. We are able to tailor these events to specific year groups and have a network of employers from a range of sectors who are available to attend. These events offer an interactive experience for students, offering the opportunity to meet local employers.

Taster Events

We can offer practical ‘hands on’ activities to give groups of students a taste of various occupational sectors. These sessions can be tailored to different age groups and can also be provided for the whole family to encourage parental engagement.

Page 18: Services for Schools - PTP · our work with partners, including schools and community groups. Our direct links with employers, other training providers, Local Enterprise Partnerships

18

Safety and involvement

Engaging Parents/Carers

At the beginning of the programme parents/carers will be invited to open evenings to discuss their son/daughter’s course of learning. They will be provided with a course information pack to ensure they are fully aware of the content and benefits of the course and how vocational study will support their son/daughter’s long term career aspirations. Subsequent parents’ evenings will be held to coincide with the school’s annual timetable and can take place at the student’s training centre or at the home school.

Parents/carers are invited to attend a celebration evening at the end of the school year where students are presented with awards and certificates.

Health and Safety

All work placements are health and safety checked thoroughly prior to any students being placed. Where risks are identified they will be mitigated or reduced prior to a student’s placement. Risk assessments are completed for all activities, trips etc where required and will form part of the lesson plan which is available to the school prior to the activity taking place. All risk assessments are completed by IOSH trained staff.

Health and safety is a key part of the student’s Induction with PTP and their induction into their work experience placement.

PTP will maintain an accident and near miss record in line with RIDDOR and our own Health and Safety Policy requirements and any incidents will be reported to schools in line with agreed school policies.

Student breaks are supervised and schools are notified by 9.30am where a student is absent without prior notification.

Safeguarding

At PTP we are thoroughly committed to safeguarding the wellbeing of our students.

We have an Every Student Matters Policy and Safeguarding Policy which determine how our staff and programmes operate to reinforce this commitment as well as supporting the Prevent Agenda.

All programme staff have an enhanced DBS check and complete Safeguarding training to ensure suitability for working with your students. Photographic ID cards are worn by staff members at all times.

Any Safeguarding issues are investigated and dealt with in line with the procedures detailed within PTP’s Policy, a copy of which is available to all schools. Schools are kept fully informed at all times of any issues arising and action is agreed and taken collaboratively with the home school.

Safeguarding and support available to students forms part of the student induction.

Equality and Diversity

PTP are committed to equality and diversity and this is evidenced by our Investors in People and Positive about Disabled People kite marks.

All staff treat students and home school staff with respect and dignity and consideration for their individual needs. Equality and diversity sessions are included in the student’s induction with additional knowledge provided through workshops such as ‘Positive Behaviours in the Workplace’ and ‘Equality and Diversity in the Workplace’.

Developing your staff

Focused Sessions to Support In-house IAG

Many schools employ their own in-house careers advisors. PTP provide short, intensive sessions around particular topics, such as Apprenticeships, Traineeships and other developments within the skills sector in order to help staff with a responsibility for delivering IAG to increase their knowledge. These practical sessions are typically delivered on site as 1-2 hour slots.

Time Management Workshops

This workshop aims to give staff an insight into some of the key issues with time management. The workshop focuses on the typical time thieves and the best way to deal with them. It will also focus on ensuring your staff are able to prioritise their time more effectively.

Communication Skills Workshops

This workshop supports staff to be able to use effective communication techniques at all levels within the organisation.

Problem Solving and Decision Making Workshops

This course has been designed to provide staff with the key components of a logical and systematic problem solving process. It will allow your team to make informed objective decisions and create action plans to implement change.

CIEH Level 3 - First Aid at Work

This course provides delegates with training and instruction in First Aid, promotes greater awareness of specific conditions/injuries and how to deal with them and outlines the duties of a first aider.

ILM - Institute of Leadership and Management Courses

PTP deliver the ILM Award in Leadership and Teamskills and the ILM Award in Leadership and Management courses. They are aimed at senior managers and we are able to customise delivery to meet an organisation’s individual requirements.

IOSH– Managing Safely

Changes in work experience regulations mean that staff may now need an IOSH qualification in order to carry out their role. This course introduces delegates to the responsibilities involved and prepares them to complete a risk assessment project and an overall course assessment test. IOSH – Working Safely

The IOSH working safely qualification is perfect for any level employee who requires some formal health and safety training. The course delivers some basic knowledge which can drive home the importance of their own responsibilities when it comes to accidents at work.

PTP can also help you to recruit and train your own Apprentices. Whether catering, classroom based or business admin support staff, an apprentice is a meaningful and rewarding investment for any organisation and its staff.

We can also look at supporting your existing staff through an apprenticeship or qualification to further enhance their skills and sector knowledge. For more information visit our website:
