Project & Commercial Consulting Smith Chalmers was founded in 2014 to provide project and commercial management consultation services to financiers, project managers, plant owners, operators, EPC Contractors and other stakeholders within the energy infrastructure sector. Our senior partners are proven, experienced and successful industry professionals who have been managing and executing the construction, commissioning and maintenance of large scale industrial plants since 1991. Building on this success in managing both projects and organisations, Smith Chalmers project and commercial consulting services use a variety of effective tools to measure and improve client project performance. Project Consulting : At project level we engage with the project management team as early as possible. Timely identification of risks allows mitigating strategies to be developed and implemented before any negative schedule or cost impact is realised. During project execution, we combine our commercial experience with our process analysis and organisational design knowledge to monitor both the project and the team performance against plan. With areas of concern highlighted, solutions can be designed and implemented. Continuous engagement through the project life-cycle ensures that any new areas of concern become apparent and also that solutions, once implemented, are maintained. For ongoing projects encountering difficulties, Smith Chalmers Project Recovery Advisory Service (PRAS) employs a variety of analytical techniques to identify and eliminate areas of concern. Commercial Consulting: Our commercial services ensure that our clients’ financial position is robustly protected. Again, early engagement is an advantage as involvement from the contract or subcontract design stage lowers the probability of contractual disagreements and disputes. Where disputes cannot be avoided, or when we are brought in to an already developed dispute situation, our services provide the strongest negotiating position for our client, both during project execution and at final account settlement. In situations where project or commercial teams become overburdened, we provide an effective additional path to complex dispute resolution. In all cases, our effective guidance is based on evaluation and verification of the facts, a contract analysis to establish liability, calculation of quantum and an assessment of the merits of any claim. Project & Commercial Consulting
Smith Chalmers was founded in 2014 to provide project and commercial management consultation
services to financiers, project managers, plant owners, operators, EPC Contractors and other
stakeholders within the energy infrastructure sector. Our senior partners are proven, experienced and
successful industry professionals who have been managing and executing the construction,
commissioning and maintenance of large scale industrial plants since 1991. Building on this success in
managing both projects and organisations, Smith Chalmers project and commercial consulting services
use a variety of effective tools to measure and improve client project performance.
Project Consulting: At project level we engage with the project management team as early as possible.
Timely identification of risks allows mitigating strategies to be developed and implemented before any
negative schedule or cost impact is realised. During project execution, we combine our commercial
experience with our process analysis and organisational design knowledge to monitor both the project
and the team performance against plan. With areas of concern highlighted, solutions can be designed
and implemented. Continuous engagement through the project life-cycle ensures that any new areas of
concern become apparent and also that solutions, once implemented, are maintained. For ongoing
projects encountering difficulties, Smith Chalmers Project Recovery Advisory Service (PRAS) employs a
variety of analytical techniques to identify and eliminate areas of concern.
Commercial Consulting: Our commercial services ensure that our clients’ financial position is robustly
protected. Again, early engagement is an advantage as involvement from the contract or subcontract
design stage lowers the probability of contractual disagreements and disputes. Where disputes cannot
be avoided, or when we are brought in to an already developed dispute situation, our services provide the
strongest negotiating position for our client, both during project execution and at final account
settlement. In situations where project or commercial teams become overburdened, we provide an
effective additional path to complex dispute resolution. In all cases, our effective guidance is based on
evaluation and verification of the facts, a contract analysis to establish liability, calculation of quantum
Despite best intentions, it is a fact of life in the engineering and construction sectors that projects
sometimes go awry. In fact, it has been estimated that up to a third of expected project profit is at risk*.
Research indicates that intervention is highly successful when undertaken early, with up to three
quarters of projects receiving early intervention managing to recover the value expected of them by
their clients*. Research has consistently identified the following as common factors in troubled projects:
Lack of clear priority and contradictory objectives Unrealistic programs / schedules Poor planning - often based on incomplete or insufficient data Lack of risk planning and management Resource problems and team conflicts
Smith Chalmers bring clarity to troubled projects with our in-house developed Project Recovery
Advisory Service offering (PRAS). This service is a combination of technical, commercial, human,
organisation and six sigma process analysis designed to examine your project issues quickly and develop
a relevant, actionable recovery plan. Our PRAS process is undertaken by our project consulting team, all
of whom benefit from industry experience on successful project execution worldwide.
Starting with the clients’ project vision, we will systematically put in place a defined schedule for the
assessment and carry out the assessment using our PRAS assessment toolkit. The results of the
assessment guide the development of the recovery roadmap, a list of critical actions that, once taken,
will improve results. Smith Chalmers consultants will continue to work with your project team through
the recovery phase and give guidance through ongoing monitoring, ensuring that any new issues are
managed and that old issues remain solved.
