.Skene Parish Church - Service Sheet – Monday 2 nd to Friday 20 th August Our first ever outdoor service took place on the 18th of July. Thanks to everyone who made it to the service. It was a lovely family time. The Lord kept the rain away and gave us a sunny day. We had a time to praise our Lord, sing and dance. We enjoyed singing without the mask. It was such a great fellowship that we have planned another for the 15th of August just before the schools’ resume. This time, we will be one meter apart. So, we can accommodate more people. Please pen the date down and invite a friend. See you there and then. Opening Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever … Amen. Call to Worship – Psalm 145 I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever. Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. Monday 2 nd Tuesday 3 rd Wednesday 4 th Thursday 5 th Friday 6 th 78. Teach me O Lord the perfect way 556. Christ – The Wisdom of God The book of proverbs is one of the wisdom literatures. This implies that it concentrates on wisdom as one of the main themes that run through the book. There are a few writers of proverbs but a large portion of it is believed to have been written by Solomon. King Solomon is the son of the most loved king of Israel, king David. Solomon is popularly known as a wise King, the wisest who ever lived. This was a special gift given to him by God when he was given a blank cheque as it were to God to ask whatever he wants. He requested for wisdom and was given great wisdom. Therefore, he qualifies to write on the topic. In the text we are reflecting on, Solomon personified wisdom. He refers to wisdom as a woman who offers some attractive ideas. She presents attractive pictures of wisdom. It offers provision, partnership and other blessings that accompany wisdom. Interestingly, in the same passage the fool is also personified. The question we may ask is what is wisdom? We seem to have two broad definitions of wisdom. At one extreme is the common use of the word. That is clearly defined for us by the academic dictionaries. They define wisdom as “the body of knowledge and experience that develops within a specified society or period”. It is also understood as the “quality of have experience, knowledge and good judgment; the quality of being wise.’’ (Oxford Dictionary). While these definitions are true and accurate in the academic world, the scripture gives us a biblical view of wisdom. According to the Dictionary of Bible Themes, “the basis of that wisdom, however, is not human cleverness but obedient reverence for God. God is the source of true wisdom and he gives it to those who seek it.” It further defines wisdom as, “The quality of knowledge, discernment and understanding characteristic of God himself. True wisdom, seen in the ministry of Jesus Christ, is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Scripture affirms that true human wisdom is a gift from God and points out the folly of trusting in mere human wisdom.” While the dictionaries give us their definition of wisdom, the scripture gives us its clear definition and understanding of wisdom. According to the passage we are reflecting on, in verse 10 wisdom is defined as the awesome fear of God. Scripture teaches in the Old Testament that wisdom revolves around the fear of the Lord while in the New Testament, wisdom is found in Christ. It is a gift from God through Christ Jesus (Eph. 1:8, 17). And in Christ are hidden all treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Col. 2:3). Similarly, Paul prays that the saints will receive spiritual wisdom and understanding (Col. 1:9). Consequently, proverbs remind us that this wisdom is for our good and gives a sense of direction to those who love it. The events around us, the situations in which we find ourselves, particularly in terms of safety, health, the pandemic, our jobs, our families, to mention a few, require that we constantly ask for wisdom. The kind of wisdom God gives. This form of wisdom may not go down well with us sometimes. Maybe, those things we do not like could turn out to be what we need or the best for us if they are consistent with God’s word and plan for us. On the other hand, proverbs present the dangers of trusting or depending on foolishness. That could be deadly in many ways. We are left to make an active choice of either choosing the wisdom of God that is secured or the foolishness that may be dangerous on the long run. May we be guided by Scripture as we seek to make the right choice. Prayer “… Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:24) Lord Jesus, merciful and patient, grant us grace, we beseech thee ever to teach in a teachable spirit; learning along with those we teach, and learning from them whenever thou so pleasest. Word of God, speak to us, what thou wilt. Wisdom of God, instruct us, instruct by us, if and whom thou wilt. Eternal Truth, reveal thyself to us, reveal thyself by us, in whatsoever measure you will; that we and they may all be taught by God.

O Lord Jesus Christ, Wisdom and Word of God, dwell in our hearts, we beseech thee, by thy most Holy Spirit, that out of the abundance of our hearts our mouths may speak thy praise.

Christina Rossetti, 1830-94

Benediction

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

Amen.

Prayers for Holiday Bible Club Monday 9th August sees the start of this year’s Holiday Bible Club, our yearly joint venture with other Westhill Churches. After having to go on-line last year due to the restrictions, we are back in person, although numbers will be restricted from previous years. Not everyone can help out, but we can all pray for those involved. Here are some suggestions for each day that the club is running Monday Pray that all the children settle in well and make friends in their groups. Tuesday Pray that the leadership team have all the support and resources they need to inspire the children with songs, drama, activities and stories. Wednesday Pray for the safety of all those involved and for the parents who are bringing their children along every day. Thursday Pray for patience, strength and stamina of all the staff as the week progresses Friday Pray that the children are inspired by the stories they have heard and want to get to know Jesus better. May we as a church welcome them into our family in the days to come

Update on Church Office and Staffing Whilst we had hoped to have the church office at Trinity opened up by now, Covid19 restrictions mean this is not possible yet. The best way to get in touch with our church secretary, Eva Will, is by telephone 01224 742512 on Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 9am and 12pm. Or by email on [email protected]. Please note that the church office will be closed on Friday 30th July (especially if you usually phone on a Friday to book your slot at a worship service). Our Children and Families Development Worker, Callum Ross, is on furlough for the month of July and returns to work on Sunday 1st August. Thanks to Callum for a wonderful promotion Sunday service and getting us started on the Hamilton Cup for 2021. Rev Stella will be on holiday from Monday 19th July until Monday 2nd August. If you have any pastoral concerns, please contact Rev Ibidun Daramola, our associate minister, on 07395006113.
