General

Welcome to VCADS ProMany functions in modern vehicles are controlled by electronic control units (ECUs).ECUs control components such as the engine and instrumentation as well as manyother vehicle functions.

VCADS Pro is a WindowsTM

-based software tool developed to test, calibrate and pro-gram ECUs on Volvo Vehicles.

VCADS Pro software is installed on a PC. Using a communication interface, the PC isconnected to the communication connector of the vehicle or, in some cases, directly toan ECU.

Using VCADS Pro, tests, calibrations and programming operations can be performedon vehicles with electronic control systems. The application consists of standard graph-ical interfaces, such as graphs and continuous displays of parameter values. Theoperations are organized in the menu according to function groups.

The level of access to various operations and sections of VCADS Pro depends on theauthorization level assigned to the user by Volvo.

Certain operations require connection to the Volvo central system. A Digipass (pass-word generator) is used to create a password to allow this type of connection. See"Digipass" page 12. The Digipass and initial code are supplied with the PC.

Note: To assure communication between VCADS Pro and the Volvo central system, the telephone line used for connection should be an analog line connected directly tothe outside. The telephone line can be routed through a switchboard, but this is notrecommended.

Note: Other software or programs may not be loaded on the VCADS Pro PC except forthose approved by Volvo. Other software and programs may affect the functionality ofVCADS Pro. The settings must not be changed from the defaults recommended in thehelp texts or directly by Volvo.

OperationsOperations in VCADS Pro can be performed on vehicles with electronic control sys-tems.

There are three different types of operations: test, calibration and programming opera-tions. These operations are made up of standard components such as the display ofsensor values or graphs that show how a signal varies over time.

When VCADS Pro is started, the identification/connection dialog window is displayed. The vehicle electrical system, type and model are selected within this dialog as well asthe matching method to be used (automatic or manual).

Note: Automatic matching requires a connection to the Volvo central system.

After completing the identification/connection dialog, the user must configure a job cardfor the vehicle. When the job card has been configured, the menu screen will appear, displaying the available operations.

When selecting an operation from the menu, check that the communication interface isconnected to the vehicle and the PC and that the vehicle’s ignition switch is in the ONposition.

1 Select the appropriate function group in the left section of the screen. The opera-tions grouped within that function group will be displayed in the right section of thescreen. Symbols in front of each operation title indicate the type of operation it is.These symbols match the buttons for Tests, Calibrations and Programming in thetool bar.

2 Select the desired operation from the right section of the screen by double-clickingit or by highlighting it and pressing the Enter key.

Note: It is possible to open an operation in simulator mode by right clicking on itand selecting Open as simulated .

In many cases, there is more than one version of a particular operation suited to acertain vehicle model. This is due to the fact that vehicles with the same model desig-nation may be configured differently. Therefore, when certain operations are opened, avariant selection dialog box will appear with selections such as engine version, trans-mission type or axle configuration. Select the variant from the list that matches theconfiguration of the connected vehicle and press OK.

The program will communicate with ECUs on the vehicle before the first selected oper-ation is opened. This may take a few minutes.

JobcardJob cards are used to store results from operations that are performed on a vehicle. Before carrying out operations on a vehicle, a job card must be configured for savinginformation about the activity. A new job card must be created, or an existing unfinal-ized job card can be opened if one already exists for the vehicle.

Job cards are stored locally on the PC being used. A list of all job cards stored on thePC can be opened from the VCADS Pro menu. Individual job cards can be opened todisplay the results of operations or completed test operations can be replayed.

Note: Job cards are normally linked to a specific repair order number when specifiedduring connection to the vehicle. When the job card is associated with a specific repairorder, that job card should be finalized when the work on that repair order is complete. When exiting the connection to a vehicle a prompt will ask if the job card for that vehicleshould be finalized. If it should be possible to save information about additional opera-tions to that job card in the future, the checkbox for finalizing the job card should beunchecked. It is not possible to save information to a job card that has been finalized.

For more information about job card functions, refer to the users manual accessedfrom the Help menu of the application (see “User’s Manual” page 5).

SimulatorVCADS Pro has a simulator function to allow operations to be opened and performedin simulator mode without the need to connect the PC to a vehicle. This can be usefulfor training or getting acquainted with the application.

The simulator mode can be activated and deactivated from the menu screen by select-ing Tools in the menu bar and clicking Simulator . When the application is in simulatormode, the Simulator menu selection will have a checkmark beside of it and the word"Simulator " will appear in the lower right of the screen (in the status bar) in a yellowblock. The simulator mode can also be activated and deactivated by pressing CTRL+S.

Each operation can be opened individually in simulator mode even if the application isnot in simulator mode. To open an operation in simulator mode, right click the operationtitle in the menu and select Open as Simulated . When in simulator mode, operationswill run with simulated data that is random and illogical. The simulated data is used toshow how the operation performs in general terms and is not intended to show howthe results should look when the operation is performed on an actual vehicle.
