A. SCREEN WILL NOT GO INTO BOX

1. Screen Guides Filled With Paint

If paint or other types of finishes are placed in the guides, operation will be quite difficult. Ifthe guides can not be cleaned to give a good appearance, replace with new guides.

2. Screen Guides Painted in Place

The Rolscreen guides must be free to move in and out of the jamb. If the guides have beenheavily painted this motion may be restricted.

Cut the paint line to avoid cracking the surrounding paint and then loosen the guides bytapping with a hammer and soft wood block as shown.

3. Screen is Wrinkled

Smooth out the wrinkles and ease the screen back into the box by placing a hand on each sideof the screen cloth as shown. Spray a lubricant up into the box and into the guides. Work thescreen up and down several times, slowly at first, in order to spread the lubricant.

4. Screen Catches on Guides

Due to misalignment or abuse the Rolscreen box may move slightly forward and down. Thusthe screen guides may move from nominal position. Then the staples in the screen edge maycatch on the guide tops and interfere with operation.

If the box will not remain in the proper position, it may be advisable to add screws to theRolscreen Box to hold it in place as shown in the picture below.

Use a 1-1/4" x #8 Phillips screw with a round head in the position shown on both sides of thebox.

B. ROLSCREEN IS DIFFICULT TO LATCH

1. Screen Guides Have Too Much Tension Near the Bottom

The catch body, see Parts List reference number 11D, may be holding the guide too tightly atthe bottom. Therefore the groove in the guide narrows at the bottom and causes an increase ininterference.

The guides may be quickly widened by opening the guide with a stiff bladed putty knife. Seepicture.

2. Screen Guides are Stuck in the Jamb

The guides may stick back in the jambs due to paint or dirt on the exterior. Pry out the guidesas shown below. Make certain that the guides move freely in and out of the grooves.

3. Catch Body Modifications A small amount, about 1/32”, may be removed from the lip on the catch body. Thus the screenrail will not need to be depressed as far to obtain engagement. Make certain that the bug sealon the bottom of the Rolscreen rail meets the sill.

C. ROLSCREEN REPLACEMENT

1. To replace Rolscreens and guides on models manufactured prior to 1975, see RolscreenRemoval & Installation sheet following this Service Section.

2. On models manufactured during 1975, or later, two screws were used to secure the Rolscreenbox in the head of the Clad Casement unit. If the replacement box has holes, use two 1-1/4” x#8 F.H. Phillips screws to install the box.

Make certain that the box is pushed down on top of the screen guides before the screws aredriven. If back-up blocks are not used, be careful to not over-drive the screws and indent thebox.

FIELD INSTALLABLE ROLSCREEN VINTAGE IDENTIFICATION TIPS

The guides for 804 design are roll formed. However, the guides for 807 design are aluminum extrusions, and they are not interchangeable with each other.

FIR - FIELD INSTALLABLE ROLSCREEN FIELD SERVICE GUIDE

The Field Installable Rolscreen has proven to be another successful member of the Pella family ofproducts, enjoyed by customers nationwide due to it’s unique concepts and features.

Occasionally Pella servicemen report minor difficulties regarding FIR installation, and although thesereports are minimal, and limited to early production units, we do want to take a moment to share with youthe Service Tips we have developed to address those situations.

Rolscreen weatherstrip does not seal on unit sill: l) Check window installation for squareness or bowed sill which may be causing lack of

weatherstrip seal. 2) Check to see if lock catches on backside of control bar are falling into the positive lock catch

cutouts on the backside of the jamb guides. 3) If the screen tends to raise up on one side after attempting to close and lock, perform the

following “Latch Adjustment Operation” to facilitate ease of locking. Latch Adjustment Operation: a) Remove Rolscreen jamb guides. (See Installation Instruction #284-ROL-1) b) Place a flat bladed screwdriver between the Rolscreen control bar and the lock latch. See photo

below. c) Raise the screwdriver to slightly bend the latch away from the control bar. d) Reinstall the jamb guides and check operation.

ROLSCREEN CLOTH RE-ENTRY FEATURE IMPROVEMENTS

The above photo and sketch shows the 1988 design, with a mark drawn, where you can cut material off ofthe guide to make the re-entry feature work better. This has been done by the factory as a running change.

This photo shows a Rolscreen guide after field modification. This modification completely eliminates thepotential for problems. No matter how you push the cloth out, the re-entry feature will return the cloth backinto the Rolscreen box.

This modification may be needed on product shipped January 1988 through February 1989.
