made up of your brothers & sisters:
ARE YOU MOVING?Lions,Are you due to move? Are you then having to leave your beloved Lion’s Club that you have been enjoying?Don’t fret, I can re-connect you with your NEW Lions Club in or near to your new home. Just contact me and
No District I Conference occurs without the seemingly tireless and bottomless energy and advice from PDG Steve Morey. He was the designer and creator of all those magnificent carved table numbers and place names, all of which, I am sure, are now safely on display in many Lions homes. Steve is also a fountain of advice on protocol, orders of business, and a myriad of small, but vital details. I think he did sit down to eat, but otherwise he was always on the move, check-ing and re-checking, and then checking again. He is an encyclopedia of information, hints and tips; an invaluable resource. Thank you, thank you, Steve.
My gratitude goes out to all the guests who made such significant contributions to the whole venture. Our International guest, PID Dr. Patti Hill and her husband Greg, our lunchtime guest speaker, Mr. Bob Macdonald, (a passionate and very knowledgeable scientist, speaking to us on Earth Day—did we get that right, or what?). Both delivered powerful, thought-provoking messages, giving us much to think about. Dr. Hill also presented International President’s Certifi-cates of Appreciation to PDG Leslie Smith, and IPDG Brian Phillips, two very worthy recipients.
Our Opening Session guests were the Giant-voiced Official Town Crier of Sidney-by-the-Sea, Mr. Kenny Podmore, (what a wake-up call he was!), His Worship Mayor of Sidney, Steve Price, and the Sid-ney RCMP Detachment Commander Sgt. Wayne Conley. Thank you all for your welcomes and involvement.
But before the Saturday opening, there was Friday Fun Night. The bar was open early, and the show opened with the performance contests. My very, very warm thanks to PZC BettyAnn Herbert for the organization of this complex part of the whole conference. Ably assisted by sister, PDG Leslie, she got the whole group of tale tellers, musicians, singers, musical performance groups, etc., organized and running smoothly. Congratulations to all the runner-ups and winners of the various categories. Then Salt Spring Island Lions took over for a very creative Fun Night, with a lovely surprise appearance by recently inducted Lion, Valdy. He just happened to have his guitar with him, there was a stage and an audience; what more could he ask? A very tricky illusionist then puzzled his audience from the stage, and then continued working the room, from table to table, bewildering as he went. A prize-laden and entertaining musical quiz followed—there are some Lions with astonishing memories— and then excellent DJ Mike took over. Thank you SSI Lions for putting together such a varied and entertaining evening.
BettyAnn also looked after the “first-timers” at the Conference. There were 22 of them. She organized the quiz which they all had the opportunity to partake in, and made sure all other delegates recog-nized them at the luncheon. Winner of the quiz was Merlane of the Sidney Lions, who garnered 39 signatures. Thank you again Bet-tyAnn; two hats worn with great flair.
Kudos and applause to various Clubs who had members involved with several aspects of the proceedings: Central Saanich, Esquimalt, Mayne Island, Duncan, and Pender Islands, involved in the bars, the Celebration of Life, Registration and voting. Thank you all, and thank you PDG Marcel Deslauriers for your guidance with the candidates. Congratulations to your incoming leadership team for 2017-2018, Elects: DG Joyce Boyle, 1st VDG Mike Dukes, and 2nd VDG Cec Specht.
Similar loud and warm thanks to Zone Chairs Maureen, Brian, Dave, Cec, and Rob, for all your assistance in the running of the events. Also to Dr, Nancy Messmer, (winner of the Early Bird Draw), and to our music maestro, Lion Ron Berod, and our roll-callers, yes, three of them, Leo and Lyne Moreau and District Lioness President, Anne Scott .
A special mention for the MC’s for lunch and dinner respectively, PDG Leslie Smith and PCC Gary Reidel. Thank you for keeping those
two large functions moving along so smoothly, although I still cringe at the Quasi Modo story punchlines.
And the final thank yous are for two Lions who were recognized for long and exemplary service well beyond and before the Confer-ence, with the presentation of two major awards. A Melvin Jones to PZC Bob Orchard and a Judge Brian Stevenson to PZC Gerry Webb. Thank you Lions both for all that you did for the Conference, and for many other events and causes well before this event.
To other matters briefly. Zone Chairs, please remind your Club members of the Officer Training set for Saturday, May 6, at Camp Shawnigan, a one-day event, in which all four major Club board positions will be covered. Also, Wednesday May 17 is the final C.S.T. meeting of the 2016-2017 year in Victoria. All incoming ZC’s are welcome and encouraged to attend.
The Conference is a great renewal event, for friendships and purposes. After it all, we should be in no doubt that We Serve is the binding force behind all that we do.
Clallam Bay Sekiu Lions happily welcomed DG Alan and Janet Guy
to their clubhouse on Wednesday, March 22. Zone Chair, Mau-reen Winn introduced the Guys. DG Lion Alan gave a rousing speech and inspired the local Lions. He presented the Club with a gold Centennial Legacy patch, recognizing on-going projects de-veloping, maintaining and supporting the Hoko River State Park/Cowan Farm. The project involves growing and distributing food, projects with youth, and supporting various parts of the park.
He inducted three new members: Laurel and Larry Burtness with their sponsor Karin Ashton, and Jane Heilman with her sponsor Mike Dukes. After the induction, he invited the new Lions to award “yearly” pins to three Clallam Bay Sekiu Lions. Lions Nancy Messmer and Don Baker were awarded 10-year pins and Roy Morris received his 30-year pin from DG Alan.
Janet Guy and Secretary Karen Dukes displayed the Centennial Banner that DG Alan is taking to every Club in the District and then to the Centennial Parade in Chicago this summer. It will be signed by Lions from every Club in the District, signaling the participation of all Lions in the International celebration.
Young Riley Person signs the banner for her father Lion Steven Person (who was awarded a 10 year pin) and for her grandparents

The Nanaimo Lions have completed their Free Skate program for this Lionistic Year. Although we experienced many days of snow and bad weather, the participation was 6,100 skaters for the season, down slightly from last year.
With that success behind us, we initiated a Free Swim program at Beban Pool on April 2. This program will run for the months of April, May and June. Six hundred and eighty-six swimmers have taken advantage of the program in the first four swims so we feel we have another program which is serving a community need.
We have completed our second year of the Spot Scanner eye screening program of Grade Four and Seven students in 16
schools in the Nanaimo/Ladysmith School District 68. We have one more school to do in the first week of May which will conclude the program in all the schools in our area. We will publish the number of students surveyed in the next Soapbox.
The Nanaimo Lions are celebrating their 70th year this year. We invite you to attend our Charter Evening. There will be more information in future DG Newsletters.

We received a total of 12 applications for funding from local students - it was a difficult selection process as these young people are shining stars academically and in their demonstrated passion for giving back to their communi-ty. We graded our candidates based on their scholastic stand-ings, commitment to volunteering and financial need. Our winners will be announced during award ceremonies in our two local high schools.

MALCOLM ISLAND
Lions ClubBy Lion John Malthouse, Club Secretary
APRIL 29th in Sointula #60-2nd Street we are holding an auction of contents at an old well known boat house that is scheduled for demolition. It contains many old and valued boat house trea-surers etc. including old lathes, grinding wheels, brass props, mast poles, planks, beams, old windows, bicycle, broad axe, etc. Promising to be a big event.
This will raise funds for local charities, societies. Viewing starts at 11 a.m. and auction starts at 1 p.m. Beer garden and concession stand available.
We are also renovating the Kaleva Trail, popular with locals and tourists.
We provide funding assistance for stage arts at the school and fundraising for the field trips.
The FINN fund continues to assist those needing help accessing critical medical assistance down island.
Always something to keep local Lions busy serving our community.
