The Challenge of
Developing Self-Control
Getting in Shape (part 3)
1 Corinthians 9:24-27, 2 Timothy 1:7
Interview with Riyanti Boyd
Review
Developing a Theology of the Body (1 Corinthians 6:12-20)
• Even though our present bodies will be destroyed,
that does not mean they are irrelevant
• Our bodies are significant because they will be
resurrected
• We have been united with Christ, including our
bodies
• Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit
• Our total personhood, including our bodies, has
been redeemed by Christ’s sacrifice
Developing a Theology of the Body (1 Corinthians 6:12-20)
• Conclusion: Our physical bodies are so
important to God that He redeemed them
through Christ’s sacrifice; therefore we must
glorify Him with our bodies
Food for the Stomach or
Food for the Heart?
(Matthew 4:1-4,
Deuteronomy 8:1-3)
In order to maintain a
healthy body weight, we
need to be sure we do
not try to feed our heart
with food

The Challenge of
Developing Self-Control
Getting in Shape (part 3)
1 Corinthians 9:24-27, 2 Timothy 1:7
Motivation for self-control
1 Corinthians 9:19-27 19 Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21
To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but
only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the
prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into
strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but
we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do
not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a
man beating the air. 27 No, I beat my body and make it my
slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will
not be disqualified for the prize. (1 Corinthians 9:19-27)
Motivation for self-control
Self-control is needed to live the victorious Christian life 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but
only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the
prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into
strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but
we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do
not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a
man beating the air. 27 No, I beat my body and make it my
slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will
not be disqualified for the prize. (1 Corinthians 9:19-27)
Motivation for self-control
Self-control is focusing our life around a singular objective 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but

1 Corinthians 9:27
27 No, I buffet my body and make it my slave so that
after I have preached to others, I myself will not be
disqualified for the prize.

Philippians 3:7-14
Philippians 3:7-14 (NASB)
7 But whatever things were gain to me, those
things I have counted as loss for the sake of
Christ. 8 More than that, I count all things to be
loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing
Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered
the loss of all things, and count them but
rubbish so that I may gain Christ…
9 and may be found in Him, not having a
righteousness of my own derived from the Law,
but that which is through faith in Christ, the
righteousness which comes from God on the
basis of faith, 10 that I may know Him and the
power of His resurrection and the fellowship of
His sufferings, being conformed to His death; 11
in order that I may attain to the resurrection
from the dead.
12 Not that I have already obtained it or have
already become perfect, but I press on so that I
may lay hold of that for which also I was laid
hold of by Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I do not
regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but
one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and
reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press
on toward the goal for the prize of the upward
call of God in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:7-14 (NASB)
Motivation for self-control
We exercise self-control to achieve an eternal crown 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but

4 I have brought you glory on earth by completing
the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father,
glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with

“Well done good and faithful servant! Enter into the joy of your master”
Motivation for self-control
To win the race, we need to compete according to the rules 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but
only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the
prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into
strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but

Action Points 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but
only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the
prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into
strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but
we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do
not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a

Source of self-control
2 Timothy 1:7 7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a
spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
Source of self-control
2 Timothy 1:7 7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a
spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23
gentleness and self-control. Against such things
there is no law.
Conclusion
We discipline ourselves that we might fulfill the calling to which we have been called, while recognizing that true self-control does not come from us, but rather from the Spirit within us.
