those who deny that there is a resurrec-tion, 28 and they asked him a question….

29 Now there were seven brothers. The

34 And Jesus said to them, “The sons of

The Hebrews’ View of Time

This Age The Age to Come

(marked by sin, selfishness,

disease, death)

(marked by life, love righteousness, peace)

Page 23: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

Key Thought #1

Marriage and sex are good things because

they were created by God.

Page 24: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

Key Thought #2

Marriage and sex are temporary things designed

for this age to populate and “to fill the earth.”

Page 25: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

Key Thought #3

Marriage and sex are necessary things due to the

reality of sin and death in this age.

Page 26: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

What?!?! No sex in heaven?

I ain’t down with that.

Page 27: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy;

at your right hand are pleasures evermore.”

~ Psalm 16:11

Page 28: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

“I think our present outlook might be like that of a small boy who, on being told that

the sexual act was the highest bodily pleasure should immediately ask

whether you ate chocolates at the same time. On

receiving the answer ‘No, he might regard absence of chocolates as the chief

characteristic of sexuality.

Page 29: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

“In vain would you tell him that the reason why lovers

in their carnal raptures don’t bother about chocolates is that they have something better to think of. The boy knows chocolate: he does not know the positive thing

that excludes it.

Page 30: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

“We are in the same position. We know the sexual life; we do not

know, except in glimpses, the other thing which, in Heaven, will leave no

room for it.”

Page 31: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

“If we consider the unblushing promises of

reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that our Lord finds our desires, not too strong,

but too weak.

Page 32: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

“We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and

ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an

ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies

in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a

holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

Page 33: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has imagined what God has

prepared for those who love him.” ~ The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NLT) ~

Page 34: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

However great or horrible marriage or sex may have been for you, heaven takes us into a

dimension where one is called to imagine the unimaginable.

”~ Tim Lane “Heaven: Better Than Sex?”

Page 35: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

Jesus is saying that heaven is far, far better than marriage & sex!

?Question #2:

What does Jesus mean when he speaks of “…those who are considered worthy to

attain to that age and to the resurrection of the dead?”

Page 38: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

?Question #3:

What does Jesus mean when he says,“…they are

equal to the angels and are sons of God?”

Page 39: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

37 But that the dead are raised, even

The Gospel of Luke 20:27-40

Moses showed, in the passage about thebush, where he calls the Lord the God ofAbraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38 Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all live tohim.

Page 40: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

The Lord cannot bethe God of Abraham,

Isaac, and Jacob, if they are dead.

Page 41: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

39 Then some of the scribes answered,

The Gospel of Luke 20:27-40

“Teacher, you have spoken well.” 40 Forthey no longer dared to ask him any question.

Page 42: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

Not only is there a heaven, but it is infinitely greater

than your wildest dreams.

Page 43: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

Hold on! With all due respect, how

do I know that Jesus was not

mistaken on this?

Page 44: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)
Page 45: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

Th resurrection is part of the Good news of the Kingdom of God that Jesus

proclaimed as true and demonstrated as real by his own death and resurrection.

Page 46: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)
Page 47: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

~ CS Lewis, Oxford Professor Lettes to Malcolm

“Joy is the serious business

of heaven.”

Page 49: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

“There was a real railway accident,” Aslan said softly.

“Your father and your mother and all of you are—as you

used to call it in the Shadowlands—dead. The term is over: the

holidays have begun. The dream is ended: this is the

morning.”

Page 50: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

And as He spoke, He no longer looked to them like a

lion; but the things that began to happen after that were so great and beautiful

that I cannot write them.

Page 51: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

And for us this is the end of all the stories, and we can most truly say that they all lived happily ever after. But

for them it was only the beginning of the real story.

Page 52: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and

the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read—which goes on for ever—in

which every chapter is better than the one before.

Page 53: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)
Page 54: Sermon Slide Deck: "Children of the Resurrection" (Luke 20:27-40)

May you know the truth that Jesus is the resurrection and life, and may you eagerly long

for that fullness of joy at God’s right hand where there are are

pleasures evermore.
