Configurations
Since the externally pressured expansionjoint design was introduced to the piping
industry in 1972 by Hyspan, it hasbecome a standard in piping systemdesign. This configuration has a totallyenclosed bellows that is protectedfrom the flow on the interior, and theenvironment on the exterior by standardweight pipe. Since the media is on theexterior of the bellows it is self draining, and bellows instability or squirm is nota consideration. Rigid guides on theinterior and exterior ensure alignmentof the bellows.
The proven design of Hyspan Series3500 Externally Pressurized ExpansionJoints excels because of close attentionto detail design and high quality work-manship. Since 1982 Hyspan hasoffered a full five year replacementwarranty (Page 15) on the standarddesign expansion joints. These designsoffer an affordable product with aproven service record without the useof expensive high nickel alloys.

3Series 3500
Series 3500 expansion joints aredesigned for installations where theprincipal movement is axial. Standardsingle configurations are designed for4", 6" and 8" of axial compression (pipeexpansion) and 1", 2" and 2" extensionrespectively. Dual configurations aredesigned for 8", 12" and 16" of axialcompression and 2", 4" and 4" extensionrespectively. If the primary movement isextension (pipe contraction) the expan-sion joint can be preset at the factory. The piping system must include anchorsto react the force produced by pressurethrust and the bellows spring constant, supports to react the weight of the pipeand media, and guides to ensure thatthe pipe alignment is maintained.

The axial expansion or contraction of pipe is determined by the change in temperature. In order to select the correct travelrefer to Table 1 which includes tabulated values of linear change in inches per 100 feet of pipe run for steel and stainless steelpipe. The values are based on an installation temperature of 70°F.
Piping systems incorporating Type 3501-3506 expansion joints must include structural reactions or main anchors as shownin the application diagrams that are sufficient to withstand the full pressure thrust based on the effective area of the expansionjoint, and the spring force produced by the deflection of the bellows.
The pressure force must be based on the highest pressure anticipated during service and testing.
Piping systems incorporating dual anchor base expansion joints (3505 & 3506) multiple single joints (3501 & 3502) in longruns, and pressure balanced joints (3501PB & 3502PB) must include structural reactions or intermediate anchors as shownin the application diagrams. Intermediate anchors react the force produced by the bellows spring constant.

Series 3500 In-Line Pressure balancedexpansion joints provide the same benefits asthe standard design with the added advantageof internally reacting the pressure thrust bylinking an additional bellows designed withtwice the effective area of the expansionbellows. The design eliminates the require-ment for main anchors to react the pressurethrust—only intermediate anchors must beprovided to restrain the bellows spring force.Technical data is provided in Tables 9 and 10for sizes 4" through 24".

Installation ProcedureApplication: Series 3500 Externally Pressurized ExpansionJoints are designed for applications where the principalmotion is axial to the centerline of the expansion joint, andthe system includes guides, supports and anchors sufficientto restrain the piping at the service and test conditions. Steamsystems must include adequate traps to remove condensate.Liquid systems must include surge compensation.
Operating Conditions: Series 3500 expansion joints aresupplied with a tag attached stating the Part Number andDesign Pressure. Standard designs are 150 psig and 300 psig, and the test pressures are 225 psig and 450 psig respectively. The design temperature for all standard joints is 500°F.Be certain that the system conditions and test conditionsdo not exceed the design values.
Movement: The axial travel of the joint is included in the partnumber as the last digit(s) i.e. P/N 3501-148-4 is designedfor 4" axial travel (compression). Consult the purchasespecification to confirm the correct part number and locationin the system. Refer to Travel Required on Page 5 for themethod of calculating pipe expansion or contraction.
Flow Direction and Orientation: The flow direction can beeither direction for Series 3500 expansion joints. Be certainthat the free end is attached to the pipe that expands onsingle joints (3501AB & 3502AB) with an anchor base. Thedrain port must be at the bottom of the joint for horizontaland vertical installations.
Media & Environment: Series 3500 expansion joints aredesigned for properly maintained steam, hot water andchilled water systems. They can be used for other media thatare compatible with the materials of construction. Refer toMaterial Specifications on Page 7 for the materials used forstandard construction. Be certain that the exterior of theexpansion joint is not exposed to corrosive substances suchas minerals in ground water and road salt.
Guides, Supports, Anchors: Series 3500 expansion jointsare designed for applications where the principal movementis axial to the centerline of the expansion joint, and the systemincludes guides, supports and anchors. Refer to Applicationson Pages 3 and 4 for system requirements. Refer to HyspanSeries 9500 Catalog 1004 for pipe guide design information.
Anchor Base: Type 3505 and 3506 dual expansion jointsinclude an intermediate anchor base to ensure that thebellows element on each side of the base absorbs themotion on one side. Refer to intermediate anchor forces inthe Anchor Forces section on Page 5 for force required.
Single expansion joints, types 3501 and 3502, are availablewith an anchor base designed as a main anchor. Refer tomain anchor forces in the Anchor Forces section on page 5for force required. The anchor base height and base patternfor both configurations are given in Table 4, page 7.CAUTION: The structure attached to the anchor base mustbe capable of restraining the thrust forces and momentsdeveloped by the expansion joint.
Shipping Restraints: External restraints are installed at thefactory to insure installation at the correct length andalignment. They are painted yellow and labeled—ShippingBars, Remove after Installation. Leave these restraintsinstalled until after the installation of the expansion joint iscomplete—but they must be removed prior to pressuretesting. CAUTION: Shipping Bars are not designed to reactthe pressure thrust of the expansion joint—they must beremoved prior to testing. Normally the shipping restraintsare installed by welding—remove by cutting and grindingwelds flush.
Standard expansion joints are factory set for the traveltabulated in this catalog. The principal travel is axialcompression (pipe expansion) with allowance for extensionif the pipe temperature is reduced below the installationtemperature. Refer to the purchase specifications for jointsordered with special settings.
Post Installation Inspection
1. Inspect the expansion joint for damage. 2. Are the Shipping Restraints removed? 3. Is the joint free to move and is the pipe supported and
guided to ensure that the pipe motion is axial to theexpansion joint?
4. Is the expansion joint installed at the correct locationand are the anchors, guides and supports installed inaccordance with the system design?
5. Are the guides and supports free to allow the movementof the expansion joint?
6. Is the supporting structure for the anchor adequate toreact the forces and moments?
Installation Preset
Series 3500 expansion joints can be ordered from the factorywith factory preset; however, if it is necessary to change thetravel during installation, the shipping bars must be removedand the length adjusted. The following table is a tabulation ofthe thermal expansion or contraction for various pipe runlengths corresponding to temperature differences from 70° F.
