All Students,Firstly to returning students of CIT, we here in the Students’ Union would to ex-tend our congratulations to you on pass-ing your exams. We are only delighted to have you back for another year! We have been working hard in the SU office over the holidays and we would like to take this opportunity to communicate some of the inner details of issues that have been raised last semester and how they developed from an SU point of view over the course of the summer months.

PArkiNGFor those who don’t know, the reason why CIT cannot build a multi-story park-ing lot is because of the congestion that is caused by all vehicles bottle-necking into CIT from the greater Bishopstown/Model Farm Road area. The council will not authorize any more spaces as more parking spaces means more cars, which will most certainly have a nega-tive impact on an already dire situation. CIT, however, does in fact have the most parking spaces out of every institute in the country. We are pushing for a park & ride facility which would be located on the Carrigrohane Road. Until we alleviate the problem please be conscious of the issue (just to let you know, some people actually drive from the likes of Eden Hall to CIT If you know these people please tell them to keep their cars at home).

LibrArYUCC’s Boole library is open for more than 70 hours a week while our library is open for less than 50, which is a terrible service level shortfall for such a valuable resource. As per feedback from stu-dents this is unacceptable and inhibits the student body from getting the best from their studies. We are currently in talks with management and will keep you informed with regard to advance-ments. On another related note “Silence is the sleep that nourishes wisdom” - Francis Bacon… in other words… if your the type of person that talks in the library please F off to the canteen.

buS SerViCeSWe have opened up talks with Bus Éireann in which we have highlighted is-sues raised by students about the 201 bus service and have asked for them to be rectified. It turned out that some Bus Éireann routes are currently under re-view so if anyone else is having prob-lems with their bus service please call up to us in the SU office so they can be documented.

There are many other dialogues within the college in which the SU are involved in on your behalf. To summarize some of these talking points would require a bit more than a paragraph, but all require your input. You can have your say by attending our first general meeting to be held on 17th October where the Learn-ing Resource Centre and the Electronic Repair shop will be big items on the agenda.*tiP* being a class rep is a great way to keep yourself in the loop with what’s going on around the college.

Secondly to the Freshers, congratula-tions on securing your place in CIT and although it has its minor issues they are far outweighed by the quality of educa-tion and overall sense of community and belonging. We know it is always daunt-ing starting a new chapter in your life but trust me the next couple of years will

be some of the best you will ever have. Good times ahead!

The social life is great but it is always im-portant to have a good balance between study (assignments, assessments etc) and socialising. A student could party their way through college doing just enough to pass and survive, but why just survive when you can thrive! We are not saying to sacrifice your Thursday night out on the ran-tan, but what we are saying is to box clever... in other words don’t just work hard… work smart! From the very start of the semester identify exactly what you need to know for your exams. You have to get familiar with it at some point and there is no better time than now. Tá tús maith, leath na hoibre – A good start is half the battle.

Network with people a year ahead of you, being nosey and asking loads of questions about the dos and don’ts in relation to your course is something we highly recommend. Networking in col-lege will not only help you to “box clev-er” with regard to your studies, but it is also a great opportunity to develop your networking skills. Empires have been built on networking. It’s not what you know, but who you know!*tiP* if at all possible use your sum-mer holidays to explore the world. Great windows of opportunity!

In the Students’ Union we ensure that all your academic needs are catered for - be it grinds, timetables, exams and grants. All you need do is visit our website www.citsu.ie where all the information is readily available or call up to the SU Office and ask for Killian. No problem is too big or indeed small for that matter and at the end of the day, you are here for one reason and that is to receive a high quality education. If at any stage you feel this is not what you are re-ceiving - be sure to let us know… you will be surprised at what a little bit of information can do for you!

We have lots of exciting welfare cam-paigns coming up throughout the year, where you are sure to find something fun and interesting to take part in. S.H.A.G. Week is coming up next month; Positive Mind & Body Week in November; Exam De-Stress Week in December; Safety Week in February; and Exam De-Stress Week in May. Through all of these cam-paigns you will get the opportunity to get information on a huge range of subjects, from sexual health to mental health, from alcohol & drug safety to life-saving. You will get the chance to partake in work-shops and get lots of free goodies!

As with all Union projects, we need your help! If you would like to get involved in some fun, non-academic, extra-curric-ular activities, why not join the Welfare Crew. You get to help out during welfare campaigns, gain a wealth of experience, and have a good time doing it! If you are interested, email [email protected] and let Niamh know that you would like to help out.

If you ever need to talk to someone, if you are worried, stressed or have any sort of health issue, call up to the SU Office and ask for Niamh. She is here to listen, advise and will help you figure out all your options.*tiP* Getting a regular sexual health check-up at your on campus sexual health clinic will not only keep your bits in perfect working order but will also give you piece of mind!

You will find our non-profit shop located in the SU Office, first floor of the Student Centre. Here you can buy col-lege supplies, such as refill pads, pens, calculators, folders, USB keys, lab coats and goggles, all provided at the lowest prices possible. You can also buy bus tickets, mobile phone credit and use our photocopying service. It is open daily from 8.55am to 5.15pm.

Over the summer we have also been or-ganising your Freshers Week and after scouring the nation and even the globe we are proud to announce that all day

time acts have never before been seen before in CIT With regards to night-time events we have met with various club owners in the city and Eclipse has emerged as the clear winner with respect to entertainment value & value for money for CIT students. For the com-ing year we are also proud to introduce Shag Tag to Cork every Tuesday night and the return of value filled Student Thursdays. We look forward to seeing you there!*tiP* Joining the entertainments Crew will allow you to gain valuable insight into how big events are organized and looks great on your C.V.

Thank you for reading and we wish every student, whether they be Fresher or masters student, the best of luck this year. We hope your studies go well and you really enjoy the year. Remem-ber, we here in the Students’ Union are here for you!

HyPNOCaT HyPNOTISTthursday 27th September at the Nexus, Student Centre, at 1 pm

This is Hypnocat’s first show in CIT.

This is the world’s first Hypnotic Pussy and is comedy hypnosis at its best.

The best and funniest in the business!” - Daily Mirror

“Amazing. We still talk about it. A night to remember” – RTE

BEyONd MagICMonday 24th September 2012 @ 1pm.the Nexus, Student Centre

The show, a tribute to the great illusion-ist Harry Houdini, stars Tony Black and Steve Spade. Witness the Razor Blade Swallow; see death-defying stunts, plus lying on a bed of nails and a genuine Victorian séance. The highlight of this show though is a deadly escape from a sealed and padlocked perspex cube of water.

A must see during Freshers Week.

PETER REId MINd REadERWednesday 26th September in the Nex-us, Student Centre at 1pm

Peter Reid has been touring Europe with his cutting-edge act that fuses parapsy-chology and mind reading with a pleth-ora of weird and wonderful skills. Peter is a new breed of entertainer, perform-ing world class stunts of the mind with audience members. This includes feats of mental agility, memory, and extraordi-nary mathematical capability that have never been seen in Ireland before.

The audience will witness a chilling dem-onstration of parapsychology; an experi-ence they will remember for the rest of their lives. Peter’s demonstrations of the ‘unexplained’ has grabbed the interest of the media wherever he has performed. And no wonder: he predicts national headlines with frightening accuracy! Who knows if it’s psychic, spirits, or psycho-logical skill? Come check it out.

CITSU Freshers Week

lORdS OF STRUTtuesday 26th September at the Nexus, Student Centre at 1pm. First time ever in Cit.

The Lords of Strut are Cian Kinsella and Cormac Mohally. Cian and Cormac are circus performers based in Cork. They have a background in circus, clown and physical comedy with a touch of broken hearts and hot salty tears and beauty products! mmmmmm, hot stuff!

The Lords of Strut street show is a par-ody of celebrity culture about two wan-nabe celebs, Seamus and Sean who will do anything to try and be famous. This high energy 45 minute comedy acrobat-ic show, contains break dancing, con-tortion, acrobatic ladder, acrobalance along with a very original comedy!

This is circus like you have never seen it before. In the air, on their backs and with very little clothing. The Lords of Strut show is a show for all ages, sometimes subtle, sometimes brash but always bright, tight and incredibly funny live entertainment!

In 2005 one in ten students used alcohol to forget worries and one in twenty used alcohol when anxious or depressed.

As you all begin a new semester here in CIT there is going to be a huge temptation to go out every night and drink alcohol. While this may sound like a good idea, believe me it is not. Contrary to what you’ve probably heard about college, you don’t have to get drunk ev-ery night in order to have a memorable expe-rience. In fact, the complete opposite is true when you don’t have many memories from drunken nights out.

We all know that Ireland has a huge drinking culture and most of us know that we drink more than we should. There is nothing wrong with alcohol, in fact, it is perfectly okay to drink, as long as it is in small quantities and you are able to control it. To make the most out of your college experience, try and get into a good routine from the start. Limit your-self to going out two nights a week at the most, and if this is the case, try and limit your alcohol intake to one night. Not only will you have some spare cash at the week, you will feel way better too.

The six destructive Steps from Over-Indulgence1. When you take a drink the alcohol pass-

es into your bloodstream and it travels merrily around your body

2. You feel relaxed3. You drink more and start to slur your

words4. You have a little more and begin to

stumble5. Hey you buy some more and begin to

spill your drink6. Finally you may pass out or vomit all

over yourself

What effect does your drinking have on others? So you may think that you’re the only one suffering the day after a night out, but you’re wrong. Think of the amount of people you could have up-set the previous night. It’s not easy to deal with a friend’s drink problems. As a result of your actions, your friends may end up stressed and anxious and spend a lot of time worrying about you. This in turn will affect their college work. Drinking heavily, although common in Ireland, is selfish behaviour. It’s not only your friends that are affected. You’ve

probably upset your own family, people work-ing in the local pub and anyone you drooled over when you were drunk. If you are worried about a friend’s drinking habits, talk to them when they’re sober.

Top tips on enjoying a night out1. Eat before you start drinking. This

slows down the rate that alcohol is ab-sorbed into your body

2. Drink slowly! Don’t gulp down three pints in an hour as you’re half way to a binge drinking session (six or more drinks in one session)

3. If you feel yourself getting drunk, slow down or stop drinking until you sober up somewhat. You’re less likely to go home with vomit on yourself this way

4. Drink loads of water or a non-alcoholic drink while you’re drinking alcohol Before you go to bed drink water as it will stop you getting too dehydrated which can cause the hangover /head-ache the next day

5. Don’t accept drinks from strangers or leave your drink unattended for any amount of time

I know it may seem a little daunting but you can still have fun on a night out without drink-ing. Get your friends to go out on the dry for a night. You can spend the night dancing, chat-ting and checking out the talent. You’ll still look amazing at 2am and you’ll wake up feeling re-freshed and able to remember everything!

CIT’s very own version of e-PUB was launched during Safety Week in March 2012, e-PUB is a personal, online BARometer to one’s alcohol consumption. By filling out short surveys, you can view your alcohol use and view support services within the local area. It only takes about ten minutes to complete, and is ex-tremely worthwhile and it will open your eyes to your actual alcohol consumption. Please log on to: https://interwork.sdsu.edu/echug/ie/Cit

My TIME IN THaIlaNd by Mairead AllenSawadee ka (hello)I was a bucket of nerves the days before my take-off, hav-ing never flown anyway without a family member or friend by my side it all got a bit daunting but nevertheless I got

on my flight, on a very early morning in Cork Airport. Then the fun began, three flights later I arrived at my destination which was to be my home for a month – Chiang Mai, Thailand. The heat was unreal like nothing I had ever experienced before; I was even struggling to breath in it. The volunteer house was different and quirky; I was in a four bedroom dorm with two other all American girls. There was two other lads in the house also one from the US and the other from Monaghan. I was only delighted to have an Irish friend in the house. My first day volunteering was spent on orientation and having a look around Chiang Mai with Cultural Canvas Thailand head man Wad – This man made my trip, as he was understanding, friendly, supportive and just amazing!!! The next day I started my work with Art Relief International. It was a lot to take in on my first day, so many different work-shops, lesson plans and names of people I would be working with. The motto I said to myself was “I can only do my best” and once I did that throughout my trip I was happy. We undertook many different work-shops with – single mothers, special needs children and adults, children from the tribal community, transgender community and children in local schools. All of our workshops were done through art in some form and promoted personal choice, learning, creativ-ity, communication and fun all in a supportive environment. Each volunteer was given a work-shop to devise and undertake a lesson plan with the par-ticipants, with the help of other volunteers and our supervisor Aimee. My lesson plan was devised for the children in a nearby school. The school’s curriculum didn’t have art as a subject so this was very much a novelty for the children. I designed a power-point display of Claude Monet (impres-sionist artist) explaining his theory and showing pictures of his work, then the children got to paint in the style of Monet. The class was very effective and the children LOVED painting their pictures. Working the special needs children was a bitter sweet experience – In one way it was sweet because I got to play and enjoy the work-shop with the children but in another way I felt that the children needed specialist medi-cal care which they were not getting. This had no reflection on the staff as they are brilliant but more to do with the culture. One child Sai Naam was deaf and blind and just slept all the time. It was my mission to stimulate the child while I was there by trying to keep him awake through rosey posey and other games and one day I got him to smile, this may sound small but for me this was a MAJOR! I had one work-shop with the transgender community and I am not going to lie I was nervous as it was the fear of the unknown but there was no need as the work-shop was probably one of the most eye-opening of them all as I really felt I got the opportunity to get to know the women. This workshop was very deep and meaningful – each participant got a piece of paper and a pencil and with our translator answered questions like; What would you like to change in your life? Why? How do you think you can change it? From this the participants created clocks depicting the questions. The results were out of this world, creativity was at an all-time high. On the weekends I went elephant trekking, floating houses and market hopping. The markets are a great way to experience the Thai culture and it helps greatly if you try and learn some Thai words (for bargaining). Thinking back about my experience now it makes me sad as I miss every-thing/one. The other volunteers were like family, we had tears and laughter but we were always there for each other. The hardest bit was saying good-bye to volunteers but the next day new volunteers arrive. I feel I am a much stronger and out-going person be-cause of this trip and that this experience has made me a better person. Thank-you CIT Societies and for any students thinking of applying for the 2013 scholarships, I would highly recommend you do so.

The ALC was originally the LSC founded on the 10th Octo-ber 2005 with the aim of supporting students in achieving their course goals. Our lecturers offer learning support in the following subjects: Maths, Physics, Programming, and Electronics. The learning happens in the rooms D259A and D259B at CIT, Block D. The well appointed suite of rooms with internet access, printing and copying facilities pro-vides a student-centered environment, where students can meet with subject lecturers in a relaxed setting outside of the classroom to discuss any queries they might have on a subject. Best of all, the service at the ALC is free of charge and open to all students across all courses! Group sessions are de-livered by lecturers and everybody has the opportunity to clarify their own individual questions on the subject. Stu-dents attend from a broad spectrum of disciplines; Science, Engineering, Computing and Building and Architecture. Many of the regular attendees have built up good commu-nication with the lecturers resulting in increased confidence facing assessments and exams. Over 250 students joined us last year. The pass rate for ALC students at the Summer Exams 2012 was 83%. This should encourage you to attend the ALC, during the year, should you face difficulties with a subject… you might just pass your exams! Subject support sessions are offered on a weekly basis dur-ing each term of the academic year, and in addition a highly successful summer programme has been provided. Information on the Centre’s activities is disseminated via @mycit-email accounts, student publications, course lectur-ers, dedicated notice boards throughout the campus and the Centre’s own website: www.cit.ie/academiclearning-centre.

MunSTer rugby Munster impress on first and second outingsIn their opening RaboDirect PRO12 game of the season, Munster put down an impressive performance, which saw them winning 23-18 to Edinburgh in Murrayfield. Although trailing twice in the first half, they responded well to draw level at half time when Captain Doug Howlett provided the inspiration for the equaliser and by the 43rd minute, which saw Ian Keatley’s penalty putting them in the lead, they never let it slip.In their second league game, and the first home game of the season, Munster took on the might of Benetton Treviso. Credit to the visitors who put up a good fight in defence, however the home side were just that bit too strong to win the game 19-6. Treviso opened with a pen-alty after three minutes but a try from Doug Howlett, converted by Ian Keatley, saw Munster storming into the lead just three minutes after. Three penalties kicked over by Keatley, ensured that the home side controlled matters for the rest of the half.Possession and control at the start of the second half seemed to change hands as the Italian side managed to gain and hold onto more possession than their counterparts. However Keatley extended the

lead in the 51st minute with another penalty and no further points were to be put on the score-board that evening. Due to his all-round solidity, Ian Keatley was awarded the RaboDirect Man of the Match.

hi, i am a student back for the second year of my course. Last year was a struggle, both mentally and financially. My parents don’t have the money so, i’m paying for everything myself... registration fee, car ex-penses, accommodation, food, books, the list seems to be endless. i spent the last couple of months work-ing, trying to make as much money as i can but at the end of the day, i know it won’t take me far. Please help me! i don’t think i’ll be able to cope with all this pressure added on top of my new course work.

College can be tough enough without trying to cope with financial constraints as well. the first thing i suggest you do is make out a bud-get plan. i know you said you were working all

summer so you have a bit of money saved up. Will you be doing a few hours during the

semester? if not where else are you planning on getting income from? did you apply for

the grant and other allowances? You mentioned that you’re paying for accommodation and a car, could you cut this down to one or the other? if you’re par-ent’s house isn’t too far away, why not live with them and drive to college. or if it’s too far away, pay for accommodation but cut out the car expense. You can budget on food by doing a weekly shopping in one of the many large supermarkets around bishopstown and choosing their own brand goods. Make a packed lunch and bring it into college with you. You’d be sur-prised how much all the rolls and coffees add up to. Finally i would advise you to call up to the Students’ union and see the Welfare officer who can give you information about funds available for struggling students.

right buddy you are going to have to budget like there was no budget before (bit like the government). First off you need to either cut down your expenses. the car is one, you can

get a student bus ticket for under a €100 that will cut your car expenses. if you’re living

near college you need to park that puppy up and leave it parked. the days of spin-

ning are over. don’t waste fuel, God knows it’s ex-pensive enough already and that price isn’t coming down any time soon! Next is the food budget, Cit and Collegedinner.ie having a great offer going for stu-

dents. it’s €10 a week and you will get all the ingre-dients for four dinners and all you need to do is pick them up outside the library every Monday and cook them. that is €150 a semester for sixty dinners that’s unreal value right there... booM! don’t forget your social activities, of course you’re entitled to a life. Get involved with Cit Clubs and Socs (many activities Free). Also, go the Students’ union nights as they have the cheapest entry plus the best drinks offers, again saving you money. the most important thing is that you need to keep to your budget, it will be hard but if you want to afford to go to college you need to keep to it. As they say count the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves

Last semester i was with this girl in Cit. We had a strict no relationship policy and were allowed see other people. however as the semester went she started to get very clingy. i found out she wanted a relationship and i told her i was not interested. She continued to push it and i stopped talking to her com-pletely! Since college is starting again what do i do?

honesty is the best policy here i’m afraid. ignor-ing it is not going to make it go away. Now i’m not saying you run up to her on your first day back in college and tell her to f**k off, i’m say-

ing if she starts texting you or tries to talk to you, you need to let her know straight away that you are not interested. by doing it that

way things can be cleared up very fast with no sticky situations! it may not feel like it now but, she will get over you.

Plain and simple my friend you move on. if she wants to start that craic up again just tell her “look i am not interested in a relationship, i just wanted someone to have fun with.” once one of you starts getting feelings for the other per-

son it can no longer be fun as someone will get hurt. She knew from the start that this

was a ‘fun only’ relationship! emotional attach-ments can often arise from ‘for fun only’ relationships and unfortunately this can lead to loss of friendship. Lesson learnt for both of you... move on!

Starting college, whether as a Fresher or returning back after the Summer, is an exciting, scary and stressful chap-ter of your life. The single most important thing I will tell

you to remember is to LOOK AFTER YOURSELF. One of the most important things you can do while you’re here in CIT is to maintain a balance between your work and social life. If you give either one of these opposing forces an advan-tage, the other is bound to suffer.Developing a sense of responsibility is all part of the process. This is not school. There is nobody here to check in to make sure you’ve finished that assignment on time or studied for that exam. It’s time to take responsibility for your own actions! Many of you will be living away from home for the first time, while others are returning back from a summer of living in lux-ury with meals and laundry being done for you, and although fast food and microwave food options are going to be very tempting, you cannot base your diet around these. Not only is this lifestyle expensive, your health WILL suffer. Of course you should make sure to treat yourself every once in a while but do not make it a habit. Instead, take turns with your housemates cooking healthy meals. You will find yourself healthier, with a bit of change in your back pocket at the end of the week. For an overall improvement in your health, get active. Going for a walk, a kick around with your friends, or even better, getting involved with a sports club or society in college, will get that heart pumping and will make you feel a lot more relaxed than you ever could imagine.College life brings some newfound freedoms that require a higher level of maturity and responsibility. From the word go in September, there is a huge temptation to go out every night. While I don’t discourage this, I do recommend that you take it easy. If you are going out two nights in a week, try and limit your alcohol intake to one night. That way, you are still having the craic but saving money and sparing yourself the hangover the next day.One emotion that many of you will feel during the first few months is homesickness. It may seem silly but I don’t think any-one can deny that they’ve felt this common and overwhelming emotion at some point in their lives. To combat homesickness, my advice is to get involved in college life from day one. Keep yourself busy and you’ll soon find yourself hanging around with people that have the same interests as you. While there is no way of predicting how your personal college experience will unfold, no matter how overwhelming your new independence and responsibilities may seem, remind yourself that you can handle them! Do try to identify your feelings and fears about this new college year and if you ever need to talk, call up to me or any of the other Officers here in the Students’ Union, and we will do our very best to help you.
