Senior Health Program is on the WayI would like to thank all of the members who took the time to call and participate in our focus group on senior health. It is obvious that many of you are interested in getting a program together and you would like it in your backyard. Some of you want group settings and some

of you want the group to be online, but the bottom line is that you want a senior health program. Everyone who participated agreed that you want the program to include more than just exercise and good nutrition—you want the social and the emotional components, too.

We are in the process of putting this program together for you. We will target this program in a couple of different geographic locations, and plan to kick this off in the November/December issue. No matter how tremendous

this program is, it is up to you to make the program a success. Even if we flew in experts from around the country (which we will not be doing) and provide you with all the facts and evidence that you can take in (which we probably will do), the only person who can make this program successful and make you healthier is you.

The excuses are easy to come up with and the choices are hard to make. I think the motto of “one step at a time” is the way to do it, and so is making adjustments in moderation. I recently experienced the thought, “if you think you will fail, you will.” I think to myself, “I am going to start doing this,” and immediately I come up with reasons why I won’t do that. Instead, it should be, “how can I do this for myself and my children?” Lee Memorial Health System cares about the health of the people of this community, and the SHARE Club is here to help you take charge of your health.

Lee Memorial Health System is One Step Closer to ‘One Patient, One Record’

SHARE Club Volunteer Knows No Limit Belle Sorokin spends a few hours every Wednesday volunteering with the SHARE Club. She assembles File of Life kits, which include a booklet designed to provide emergency personnel—such as paramedics and EMTs—with necessary medical data to begin immediate treatment. She began volunteering with Lee Memorial Health System 20 years ago, and has no intention of stopping any time soon.

At 97 years old, Belle is the oldest volunteer at Cape Coral Hospital. She started volunteering to keep busy, but soon realized that it allowed her to focus on someone other than herself. Her doctors encourage her to keep volunteering for as long as she is able, and she feels lucky to be healthy enough to continue.

“It’s the most wonderful thing in the world,” says Belle. “Not only does it keep me functioning physically and mentally, but I get to help others. That’s the best part.”

With almost 70 years of volunteer experience, Belle recommends volunteering to any seniors who feel lonely or depressed. “You don’t have to stop being active just because you are retired,” she says. “There are many people who rely on volunteers and you will feel so fulfilled by helping others. Volunteering truly is a privilege.”

For more information about volunteering, visit www.LeeMemorial.org/volunteer or call 239-343-2388.

New Breast MRI Arrives in Southwest FloridaThis year, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends a breast MRI in addition to mammography for women at increased risk for breast cancer. The Sentinelle Vanguard Breast MRI—the most comfortable breast MRI—is now available in Southwest Florida.

While breast MRI has been around for several years, the Vanguard is an innovative tool for detecting tumors that may go unnoticed with a mammogram, and for women at high risk for breast cancer. “An MRI is by no means an alternative to a mammogram or ultrasound,” says Dr. Saif, M.D., diagnostic radiologist and women’s advocate at The Outpatient Center at the Sanctuary. “The Vanguard is another tool to evaluate the breast, and it is the best tool that currently exists.”

The Vanguard is used by the top US cancer centers, including MD Anderson, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Mayo Clinic, Moffitt Cancer Center and Yale-New Haven.

If you have questions about the Vanguard, please call the Lee Memorial Health System Cancer Advocacy Center at 877-680-0008.

Lee Memorial Health System took a major step forward with Epic—our electronic medical record—when we implemented this summer the patient scheduling component of the EMR, called Cadence.

Cadence is used by several departments to schedule outpatient procedures, such as respiratory exams, rehabilitation therapy, X-rays and much more. Cadence benefits patients by having multiple safeguards to ensure the correct procedure is being scheduled. For instance, if a patient with a history of breast cancer in the past five years calls to schedule a screening mammogram, question prompts will help the scheduler know immediately that the patient needs a diagnostic mammogram, instead.

Cadence also has advanced capabilities for the future, such as enabling physicians, nurses and other caregivers to log on to the system to see what procedures have been scheduled for patients. In a few years, patients will even be able to access the secure system online from home or anywhere to see segments of their own medical histories with the “My Chart”

feature of Epic, as well as schedule appointments and procedures.

Eventually, our entire health system will be using Cadence and Epic. Besides most of the LPG primary care offices, Epic is already installed in the Emergency Departments at Cape Coral Hospital, HealthPark Medical Center and Lee Memorial Hospital. The system will be launched at Gulf Coast Medical Center by mid-2011. We will also offer the EMR system to community physicians not employed by the health system.

A more complete picture of a patient’s health eliminates repetitious questions and unnecessary tests and allows for faster and more accurate diagnoses. Our ultimate goal: “one patient, one record.” Peace,

Jim NathanPresident, Lee Memorial Health System

Deep Vein Thrombosis: It’s Very Serious and Very preventable In 2003, NBC News Correspondent David Bloom died overseas while reporting on the Iraq war. Bloom spent his final days alongside troops, even riding along in tanks. But his death was not caused by a bomb, gunfire or shrapnel. The killer was much more silent and stealthy: deep vein thrombosis, or DVT.

DVT is a condition that forms blood clots in the deep vein system, most commonly in the legs. “If left untreated, clots can travel to the heart and lungs, blocking circulation and becoming a potentially life-threatening problem,” says Moutaa BenMaamer, M.D., a vascular surgeon.

DVT is one cardiac condition that is not caused by great strain or overdoing your workout. Rather, DVT clots usually form when movement is too limited. In Bloom’s case, the days he spent sitting in the tank’s cramped quarters caused blood to pool in his veins and clot. The Coalition to Prevent DVT reports up to 2 million Americans suffer from DVT each year. Approximately 300,000 of them die from a resulting pulmonary embolism, which blocks arteries flowing to the lungs.

“DVT can be life-threatening, and it does kill,” Dr. BenMaamer says. “But, we can find it early and treat it easily.” DVT can be diagnosed by a painless, non-invasive ultrasound in about 20 minutes. Once detected, a patient will be given a blood thinner and the cause of the DVT will also be treated.

How can you avoid DVT? Obesity or limited mobility may increase your risk, so moving around and exercising is important. “Treating DVT can avoid complicated surgeries down the line,” Dr. BenMaamer says. “But prevention is better than the cure. Don’t wait to develop DVT. You have to walk a lot. If you need to lose weight, start now.”

Warning signs include sudden swelling of the legs, leg pain or heaviness, or sharp pains in the calves. If you experience any of these, go to your doctor.

Daniel Vall considers himself to be in good shape. He plays golf often, exercises regularly, and does not smoke or drink. The 74-year-old SHARE Club member has emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease—also known as COPD—but is one of the healthiest members of the Lee Memorial Health System pulmonary support group. ‘Huffers & Puffers,’ as the program was nicknamed shortly after it was started several years ago, is open to COPD patients, caregivers and family members.

“I’ve made some great friends at Huffers & Puffers,” says Daniel. “I used to be a professional actor, so I enjoy making others laugh. If that makes them feel better, then I feel good to have helped them.”

Jodie Burgess, who acts as the group’s moderator and also suffers from COPD, says that the goal of the group is to give

people a place to share their experiences with others who understand exactly what they are going through.

“We often have guest speakers who discuss different topics that our members find useful,” says Jodie. “We make sure our members know how to get into an assisted shelter during a hurricane or how stress affects their symptoms.”

Huffers & Puffers meets once a month. For more information about the group, please contact Pulmonary Rehabilitation at 239-335-7720.

The staff at the Regional Cancer Center understand how frightening and confusing a diagnosis of cancer can be. That is why they developed the Cancer Nurse Navigator Program.

Navigation is a process of care management that begins when a person receives a suspicious finding or a cancer diagnosis. This one-on-one assistance helps to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment by addressing needs that may arise during this experience.

Dedicated cancer navigators are nurses with specialized knowledge of specific cancers and a great compassion for those struggling with cancer. The Nurse Navigator functions as a liaison to enhance the quality and continuity of care and help guide through all of the complexities that a diagnosis of cancer can create.

Nurse navigators are currently available for brain, breast, colorectal, lung, ovarian/uterine and prostate cancers at the Regional Cancer Center.

Navigators help you to understand your diagnosis and the treatment options you have. They may coordinate tests and medical appointments and will assist you in accessing appropriate resources and referrals.

Nurse navigators empower patients by gaining knowledge of site specific concerns. They are your advocate.

Cancer Navigation Services are free to individuals who are currently undergoing treatment or have a history of breast cancer. For more information, please call 239-343-9500.
