A LETTER FROM OUR TECH. EDITOR

Page 4: September2011

My name is Justine and I will be

serving as your 2011-2012 Division 37 East Key Club Lieutenant Governor! First off, thank you for reading! (And for the returning readers, Hi there! ) YOU, the members, are extremely important to the club, the division, the region, the district, and international. YOU, the members make up what we call Key Club. Without YOU, we wouldn't be here. Key Club is something that many people can't really put into words. It's not only a club, we don't only do service; Key Club is, at least to me, an experience. A wonderful one, at that. Throughout the year, we will be meeting new people, developing our leadership skills, and gaining experience. I just want to say, "Stick around, you won't regret it. There is something that each person will give back to Key Club. And there is something that each person will take with them." I hope to see you all around...and now, for my schpeel on a lighter note:

Fall is almost here! These temperature changes constantly remind me that this year is going by so fast. For many of us, it's been about a month since school started, and it's amazing how fast we have adapted to our new surroundings and experiences! Can you believe it? I'm almost halfway through my term which ends in April 2012! Time really does fly!

As always, the months of Sept-November can be extremely stressful. With school, Key Club, and for the seniors (college). Many of us are in the same situation. You find yourself overwhelmed, exhausted, and just plain out of it. I'm here as well as the division to keep your SPIRITS UP. We still have numerous large events where we can show off our D37E JELLYFISH SPIRIT. I can't wait to see our division grow strong and proud. We're creating history here; don't you want to be a part of it?

CARING – OUR WAY OF LIFE

DIVISION 37 EAST is composed of nine clubs;

Escondido High School, Escondido Charter High

School, High Tech High North County, Mission Hills

High School, Orange Glen High School, San

Marcos High School, San Pasqual High School, San

Pasqual Academy, Valley Center High School.

COLORS: Purple and White

Mission statement Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership.

Vision We are caring and competent servant leaders transforming communities worldwide.

Core values The core values of Key Club International are leadership, character building, caring and inclusiveness.

Objects

• To develop initiative and leadership. • To provide experience in living and working

together. • To serve the school and community. • To cooperate with the school principal. • To prepare for useful citizenship. • To accept and promote the following ideals: • To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather

than to the material values of life. • To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in

all human relationships. • To promote the adoption and application of higher

standards in scholarship, sportsmanship and social contacts.

• To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.

• To provide a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render unselfish service and to build better communities.

• To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which makes possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and good will.

I pledge, on my honor, to uphold the

Objects of Key Club International; to

build my home, school and

Key Club TODAY!

With all the new members joining Key Club, things are beginning to speed up compared to the more laid back summer. There are a lot of things your club needs to prepare for along with things to get done and turn in. It is not a good idea to start procrastinating with Key Club. We understand that you have school and many other things you need to focus on, especially the seniors. If it seems like you have more on your plate then you can carry, here are some tips to help you get work done:

Planning ahead of time is a great way to start. Know when things are happening, how things are going to set

up, when it‟ll end, who will be there, etc.

Break down larger tasks into smaller tasks.

Delegate things that be done by someone else. You have officers for a reason. And if they‟re busy, you can

always set up a committee for certain projects and delegate a leader for that committee.

Starting and finishing assignments early.

Ask questions and ask for help! Being a Key Club member puts you in a part of a whole other family! There

was will always be someone who is willing to help out, don‟t be afraid to ask!

What is MNT?

In 38 countries around the world, maternal

and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn

the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one

baby every nine minutes. Its effects are

excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated,

painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to

light and touch. There is little hope of survival.

And tetanus kills mothers too.

Why focus on this issue?

It is unacceptable that innocent newborns

and their mothers suffer and die from MNT

when it can be prevented so easily. This is also

an amazing opportunity to reach the poorest,

most neglected mothers and babies with

lifesaving health care. Developing delivery

systems for MNT vaccines will blaze a

trail to provide additional desperately

needed services to these marginalized

families.

What is the Eliminate partnership?

Hand in hand, Kiwanis and UNICEF will

eliminate MNT and change the world.

Kiwanis' commitment, vision and

strength in reaching communities and

leaders will help wipe out this cruel,

centuries-old disease and pave the

way for other interventions. UNICEF has

staff working in the most isolated

corners of the globe and an

unbeatable supply chain.

Our District goal is to raise

$450,000 by 2015.

Want to get more involved with Key Club at a division level? Then run for the 2nd executive assistant, position. Our LTG is looking for a third member to join the Division team. We're looking for someone who is spirited, good at communicating with others, a great planner, organized, and is willing to put their all into Key Club!!!

Page 12: September2011

WOW. I am seriously blown away by our division's tremendous spirit! Planning our first divisional fundraiser was insanely challenging, especially since school started not too long ago for most of us! I am here to tell you all: IT WAS A SUCCESS!!! We raised over $300 for Pediatric Trauma Program! We're getting closer to our division's goal of $3000 for PTP before November 19th (Fall Rally South) A great shout out to my divisional assistants (Kim Vo and Jose Espinoza) as well as the members who helped plan AND of course, ALL those that attended!! It wouldn't have been as successful as it was if YOU weren't there!!

Several things happened that I feel we need to address early on.

1. Language: It was brought to the attention of the ADVISORS and myself that profane language was heard at the

bowling alley from our Key Clubbers. I get that teenagers, you know, cuss sometimes...but PLEASE be mindful of your surroundings. Our lanes were near the children's lane, and the alley is a family friendly environment. If you want to cuss or use profane language, DON'T in a Key Club setting. (Or don't let me hear it. I actually strongly dislike cussing)

2. Trash: You're walking along and you see a bunch of tables. That one over there has a plate left behind...no big deal. That other table? A buttload of napkins and mysterious liquid dripping onto the seat. I don't know how that comes off to you, but I find it gross. I don't want to see that. Trash, especially YOUR trash should always be thrown away or recycled. Pick up after yourself. It's rude not to.

3. Listening: I know that there are a lot of people, it was

12

Page 13: September2011

exciting, we were at a bowling alley...but it would mean the world to me if you guys could listen while people are speaking or at least pretend to listen. It's highly disrespectful to be speaking when someone else has the floor. Especially if we have a guest or an adult speaker. Plus, I don't want to be repeating answers multiple times because some were talking or just...not listening. You should WANT to listen; find out new service projects that you can go to, meeting dates, upcoming DIVISON event dates, Fall Rally information, DCON, etc.. There are so many updates that I need for all of you to just sit still and be silent while we do our logistical DCM business. The less you talk over people, the less time we spend trying to quiet you down, and the more time we have for service and other events!

4. Cliques: Now, we have friends or people we enjoy hanging out with. I get that, and it's totally understandable. However, I never want to see people excluding others. One of the core values of Key Club is INCLUSIVENESS. So be nice. Break out of your shell and talk to someone you normally don't talk to. And if you become friends with everyone, look! You have more friends to hang out with at large events!

Remember, as Key Clubbers, when you participate in an event, project, or fundraiser, PLEASE be mindful of other people as well as RESPECTFUL. I shouldn't really have to say these things because I know we can all be kind, mature, and respectful. When we participate as a group, we are REPRESENTING not only Key Club International, Division 37 East, and most importantly YOURSELF. How you act in front of others allows people to get an idea of our group as a whole. And we want to make sure we leave GOOD, LASTING IMPRESSIONS. So, please check yourself and watch out for your friends as well!

Again, thank you ALL for coming. Also, CONGRATS to Karina Jiminez! You got the highest bowling score during the countdown!! Your prize of a free division shirt will be awarded as soon as the shirts are printed! Everyone else, look out and listen up for random contests.

Justine Hsu

Lieutenant Governor

It was fun expressing my natural talent at bowling, well... It was fun attempting to bowl and making a fool out of myself in front of people I didn't even know, plus it was all for a good cause. I met people from all over our division, and had a great time expressing HOW I FEEL! (fine, by the way, all of the time.)

Hey Jellies!

I can’t believe that even though it’s our very

first year as Division 37 East, we’re somehow

able to make an extremely dedicated and

proactive group of members! I want to

apologize for the late newsletter. I never

realized how important it is to keep things

balanced. Being a senior, not only do I have

school work, studying, and exams, I also

have to start applying for Colleges! So an

amazing piece of advice which you all have

heard, STAY ORGANIZED AND PLAN AHEAD.

Setting due dates ahead of time can help A

LOT.

Hopefully you enjoyed reading/looking

through this newsletter. I apologize for some

of the photos having bad quality.

Remember, if you ever want to have your

club recognized in this Newsletter, please

send me an e-mail at

[email protected] with an article and

photos of events or services your club took

part in.

Yeah, that’s me bowling, I’m such a pro. :D

ESCONDIDO HIGH

CLUB RUSH – Julian Escobedo (President) Escondido High School has not had their club rush yet. They are one of the lucky schools who were going to have club rush on the day of the huge blackout. But, that does not mean that we were not prepared. We began planning a new, improved club rush that would quintessentially capture the essence of the Key Club spirit in only a half hour of time. We decided that we would have a lot of spirit everywhere. Wherever you turned, you would see someone representing Key Club in their own fashion. Of course, we didn‟t get to show off our spirit anyway. What we did get was more time to plan. We decided that a few announcements and a poster or two would not make much of a difference if our members felt like if they were not important to the club. Our club began to make tons of posters with divisional spirit on them. We want new members to see a giant jellyfish and ask “Why is there a girl with a giant jellyfish advertising Key Club?” We want people to join, not just for Fall Rally, but also for our year-long events which help the community. We have decided to show them how much fun Key Club can be; you can help your community while also hanging out with your friends. Our Key Club is also looking into other school clubs in order to get new members. We have begun recruiting members in our school‟s National Honors Society. NHS members are always looking for new, fun service hours which we can provide. Surfrider also has beach cleanups which help boost memberships. The last, but certainly not least is Best Buddies. Helping out in Best Buddies would be rewarding in many different ways, and hopefully diversify our members even more. Our Club Rush has been rescheduled to sometime in late September or October, after our school‟s homecoming. Hopefully we will be able to have packed meetings throughout the year, with new and old members or Helpers Everywhere Raising Opportunities Excellently Somewhere (heroes).

ART SMART

Art Smart is an ongoing event where a whole bunch of awesome volunteers gather together around the Center of the Arts and we chill with cute and intelligent kids! Art Smart allows kids to train their cognitive abilities. Not only are they training to be big awesome kids but they're also having fun at the same time. Some of the many fun things we do are building food statues, spray paint, crayon resist magic, and SINGING!

CLUB RUSH – Melina Rios (President) Hello everyone! My name is Melina Rios and I am president of the Escondido Charter High School Key Club. Although we did not have an official club rush, we were able to successfully recruit members and get them involved in the many events we have planned for Key Club this year. The day before the first day of school, my officers held a table by the library, where they passed out flyers and candy to prospective Key Club members during registration. We continued to promote Key Club for the first two weeks leading up to our first meeting and were both surprised and pleased to find that the room was literally overflowing with people. Luckily, we had saved spots for our wonderful Kiwanis, Evelyn Madison and Lyle Davis, amongst the crowd, while Justine made her way into the room a little while after. I would say that we had about 120 people fill that small room with over 100 sign ups! As of now, we continue to have about 100 members coming to our meetings each Wednesday during lunch. It‟s amazing to me that all these members are continually interested in coming back each week, and my goal is to provide them with enough community service events to satisfy their willingness to serve. And for this reason, we as officers are trying to give the members the chance to serve and lead in anyway possible: through electing class reps, getting the members involved in leading a service community, or even baking cookies for an upcoming bake sale. I believe that to be a successful club, our members need to be firmly in support of our community service events. Among one of the most notorious events we have is our annual Operation Thank You. This project is one of my favorites as it gives back to the troops. It was started by one of the teachers at our school who currently has a brother deployed in Afghanistan. We not only write letters and package food and supplies for our troops, but we have fun doing it! Giving back to people who do so much is only one of the few things we can do to show our gratitude. If you have any questions or would like to contribute in anyway, please contact me at [email protected]. Or if you would like to contact me for any other reason, I would be more than willing to talk to you! Let‟s make this 2011-2012 year amazing! Hope to get in touch with all of you throughout the year and help our division grow stronger.

COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP

On Friday the 16th of September, we had our first community cleanup of the year. With over thirty members at the front of the school by 3:15, we set off with gloves and trash bags in hand. There were five groups of six, each with a teacher to lead them on their journey. Everyone was so excited to be involved in a hands-on experience that would result in a beautiful community. Their enthusiasm showed in the number of trash bags that were filled. Because each group took a different route, in the attempts to cover as much of the community as possible, there was a total of about ten full trash bags. We are planning to have at last three more community cleanups within this next year and are hoping to get similar results.

ORANGE GLEN

CLUB RUSH – Luchie Glorioso (President) It was the day we had been anticipating since the day we first became officers: Club Rush. The officers of Orange Glen Key Club endlessly prepared even until the very last possible moment to make Key Club look as fantastic as possible. We had little strips of paper to hand out as well as highly decorative fliers posted in the most popular classrooms on campus on the day of club rush, Tuesday, September 6. We were unfortunate in which we were placed at one of the last tables on the strip where club rush was held. It was geographically inconvenient, I mean, who would want to walk ALL the way down past the several other attractive clubs handing out candy and with awesome presentations? 139 people did. We did not hand out candy OR mention anything about FRS. We promoted Key Club in the most fashionable way possible: cheering. The executive board's enthusiasm as well as excitement for Key Club attracted a variety of Patriots to our booth and successfully got them all to attend our first meeting! Our first meeting on Thursday, September 15, was also successful in which our classroom was FILLED even before the bell to go to class rang. We had at least 120 people attend the meeting where we also had no problem with noise or getting others attention. Several potential members have already displayed their interest in our upcoming events, such as a Leukemia and Lymphoma Walk or our Sleep-a-thon to raise money for the homeless, however the officers have vowed to not mention a thing about Six Flags UNTIL the soonest possible date. That way, we won't have people joining JUST to go to Six Flags. With that said, we expect to grow from our 66 paid members of last year to 100! I don't think it'll be a difficult task. I have a magnificent executive board behind me and together we'll successfully reach our goal! We are exuberant to finally get the ball rolling, serving the community, and making tons of new memories with this years Key Club! Let's go Orange Glen Key Club! AWW YEAAAAHH!

YOUTH COURT

Youth court is a program that allows teenagers who committed petty crime to have a second chance and fully expunge their record of misdemeanor forever. The offender is judged by a jury of peers (volunteers) who chooses the sentence depending on the status of offense. Typical offenses are theft, vandalism, and disorderly conduct which the jury has the choice of sentencing the offender of community service (5-25 hours), educational workshops etc. along with the mandatory written apology & jury duty. Youth court is a three hour long community event that consist of three or more cases. Volunteers can also become attorneys in youth court to further their interest in law by attending a workshop.

CLUB RUSH – Brian Meredith (President)

So during the first day of school, I had a bunch of members promote Key Club to the freshmen at my school. The awkward little kids standing in the quad were so easy to spot! For about 2 weeks it was heavy promotion and meeting new faces. I think the really important thing about promoting Key Club to underclassmen is to remember them, keep it personal. It helped to know them and say “hi” in the quad. I‟m sure it made them feel more comfortable with me and what Key Club is. So we had meetings the first week of school (second day of school!) and about sixty kids showed up. We kept that number consistent for three weeks and finally club rush was creeping up. I created a spirit committee whose main focus at the time was to promote key club at club rush. I really emphasized how important it was to talk about how gaining community service hours, meeting new people, building character, and going to Fall Rally were just perks that Key Club offered. I had about 20 kids sign up for that and delegated the tasks of leading the spirit committee to our historian, Alan Trinh. We had the spirit committee walk around during club rush to tell people to check out and sign up for key club. We were the most publicized club up to and during club rush. It was easy to get members flowing into our table and explain to them what Key Club is. Having the president, an underclassmen, and another officer at your table is a really effective way to talk to people signing up because it gives diversity and solid information. During club rush I was yelling/screaming "check out key club, look good for college, feel good, and help others." Honestly afterwards, I felt so happy and blessed to see the amount of names on the sign up sheet. Prior to club rush, I told me self about a hundred members would make me content but seeing the success of our club rush made me realize that our club‟s effort was finally being recognized. Just today I walked into the admin‟s office to check on my club‟s approval to use the auditorium. The secretary asked me why I had to move the meetings and I explained to her that with about two hundred kids showing up to a meeting, a classroom couldn‟t hold that. She asked me what my club was and I proudly told her, Key Club<3.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB CARNIVAL

On Saturday, September 17th, San Marcos High Key Club kicked off a year of giving back to the community by helping out at the Boy‟s and Girl‟s Club “Day for Kid‟s Carnival” in San Marcos. We all had a lot of fun helping out at the different booths which included Puzzle Ball, a blindfolded pudding eating, and trying to get each other soaked from head to toe. Everyone had a good time giving back to our community which just shows how much fun community service can be, especially when you get friends to join and make new friends involved. Key Club President Brian Meredith was especially happy with the turn out of members at the event and looks at it as a good sign of what is to come from the club this year. The littlest things to us can make the biggest difference to someone else. The look on Mr. Martin‟s face when he thanked us for our help was priceless and the feeling we get from making people happy should be one reason why we do what we do in Key Club and why we should be open to helping out the community whenever possible. For all of those people who were there to help, we‟d like to thank you especially, because without you the event would not have been possible.

What are your thoughts on

Key Club and what caused

you to join?

ZACH SUGANO

I joined Key Club because my sister and

parents really thought I should get more

involved in school and clubs. Although I

was hesitant to join it at first I decided it

would be good and Jamie Villareal seems

to have a lot of fun with it. Also, it looks

good on college applications.

JACK COSTELLO

I joined because it seemed like a good way

to get involved with my community

and Michael Kumura got me to join.

PATRICK GILLES

I joined Key Club because I had heard

about it about it in Middle school and it

sounded pretty cool to me then! When

frosh year started, I told some of my friends

if they would do it as well, and they agreed.

Hearing that Brian was president of Key

Club made me even more excited! Key

Club is felt like all win for me, hanging out

with friends while giving back to the

community, sounded great to me then,

and still sounds just as good now! Plus, I

LOVE the "How Do You Feel chant!"

SARAH DRAKE

I joined Key Club because last year people

came to my junior high and said how good

it is and fun it is and how it helps you get

your community service points while

spending time with your friends.
