    PREPARATIONFORWORSHIP

But Joseph said to them, Do not be afraid! Am I in the place of God? Even thoughyou intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good, in order to preserve a nu-

merous people, as He is doing today.

    - Genesis 50:19-20

If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether welive or whether we die, we are the Lords.

    - Romans 14: 8

The world is charged with the grandeur of God.It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oilCrushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?Generations have trod, have trod, have trod; And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil

And wears man's smudge and shares man's smell: the soilIs bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.

And for all this, nature is never spent; There lives the dearest freshness deep down things; And though the last lights off the black West went,Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs --Because the Holy Ghost over the bent

World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

    - Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889)

    PRAYEROF CONFESSION

    Almighty and merciful Father,You made us from dust, and created us a people;

You saved us from death, called us to obedience, and sent us forth to bless.

But still we stray. We tend our cares and worries first, and distance ourselves from others need.We call You Lord, but turn away when obedience is inconvenient. We call You Savior, but place our trust in wealth, esteem and success.

Have mercy upon us, O Lord, and forgive us our sins.

Convict our hearts of our waywardness, and deliver us from the vanity of self-deceit.

Accept our offering of our broken selves, and redeem us by Your unending grace,

that we may be filled with the joy of Your salvation, and stirred to go forth into all the world,

sharing Your gospel and loving Your people;in the power of Your Holy Spirit, and through Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ,

in whose most holy, humble and powerful Name we pray. Amen.

As cantor of the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Bach was called upon to write a cantata fevery Sunday of the year. Over a number of years, Bach wrote almost 300 cantatas. Thiswas a remarkable feat because not only did he have to compose the music, he had to re-

search the text, have the parts copied (by his wife and children), and on top of it he had torehearse and learn to perform the music. Todays prelude is one of Bach's most well-knowpieces which was originally arranged for orchestra. The cantatas openingSinfoniais a joyfuexpression of thanksgiving to God. Today, we celebrate Rally Day, and also our nation re-members 9/11. And so we give God thanks for a brand new season and for Gods healingpresence through the years as summed up in the title of Bachs prelude: We Thank Thee, GWe Thank Thee!

Today we welcome back our Chancel Choir from its summer break. American composerEverett Titcomb served as the organist at St. John the Evangelist Church in Boston. Tit-comb composed numerous anthems and service music for the Episcopal liturgy. Titcombis well-known for his anthem Behold Now, Praise the Lord, composed for the centennial ofChrist Church Cathedral (Houston, Texas) in 1939. This anthem is still frequently per-formed at the Cathedral.

A native of San Francisco, composer Richard Purvis held the position of Organist andMaster of Choristers at the citys Grace Cathedral from 1947-1971. Purvis organ compos

tions were characterized as tuneful, richly colorful, and even whimsical.A Prayer of Patrioti(1966) includes fanfares, a flowing melody, a lively pedal, and a classic Hollywood finale othe American hymn tune MATERNA.

Next Sunday Alana Carithers, violinist, will participate in worship since she was unable tobe here last month because of the storm.

Childrens Choirs rehearsals begin this week. New children welcome at any time!

Grace Covenant has been giving non-perishable foods items to the William Byrd Community House for several years to assist in filling their food pantry. The William Byrd Comm

These are everyday items that FooStamp dollars will not cover and may be very costly to a low-income family. We have partnered with this ministry by giving non-perishable food items.
