2014 President [email protected] (205) 790-3771

Dear Members,

As I write this article, we are approximately 40 days from reopening the Founders Golf Course. The Champions Tour has been working diligently to prepare the Founders Course for the 2016 Regions Tradition. We will be releasing a firm October Founders reopening date as well as

an October schedule in early to mid September. When Founders reopens, we will have eleven modified greens. All the bunkers will have been updated and have added new bunkers in strategic places. Our course will have the modifications needed to be Champions Tour ready! Although the Founders Course will be reopening in early October, we do not anticipate the Founders Course to be in pristine condition until spring 2015.

We have officially broken ground on the Founders Golf Operations Building & Plaza and the Legacy Golf Teaching Center! Both projects are on time and budget with the Golf Operations Building & Plaza set to open in April 2015, and the 3-bay Legacy Golf Teaching Center to open in January 2015. The excitement surrounding both projects is immense!

There is a membership incentive going on now. Your name will be engraved on a brick in the Golf Plaza if you sponsor a new member and he/she lists you as the referring member sponsor. Literally become a part of Greystone history... more information on page 5.

Greystone Giving Back We are fortunate to be members of an excellent club. Giving back to our community is something we are great at doing, and I’d like to thank Chairman of the Greystone Foundation, Scott Stone for his hard work in making the Beach Party on the Green event a success despite the shaky weather. Thanks to all of the Beach Party on the Green sponsors, the Greystone staff, and everyone who assisted in putting on and supporting this excellent annual event.

For the tenth year, Greystone hosted the Save the Os 5K benefiting ovarian cancer research. With less participation this year than last, more money was raised totaling over $50,000 for the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation. Thanks to all key players who sponsored and executed this event, especially John and Jennifer Johnson, Fitness Director Christy Thompson and Assistant Fitness Director Todd Makofski.

Greystone shared in the excitement of the popular ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Wednesday, August 20th. Greystone Members and Residents were invited to come out and get bulldozed with ice water. Approximately 100 Members and Residents took part in the event and over $1,000 was raised to strike out ALS. Thank you to Mike Murphy and ABC 33/40 for bringing awareness to the disease by covering the Greystone community’s involvement. Click here to see the ABC 33/40 clip of the Greystone crew getting bulldozed with ice water!

Thank YOU! The club documented record participation in the month of July. Can you believe there were almost as many rounds of golf (40 short) in July 2014 as July 2013 when both golf courses were open? Thank you for patronizing your club. Now, share our excellent club with your friends and neighbors. There has never been a better and more exciting time to join Greystone!

See you soon at The Stone,

Thank you Jennifer and John Johnson!

Dear Members,

The party has started! Over the next 20 months, Greystone will go through an amazing transformation. From new buildings… 9,500 sq. ft. Golf Operations Center (cart barn) at Founders and 2,500 sq. ft. Golf

Teaching Center at Legacy to the complete remodel of the lower level (15,000 sq. ft.) at Founders to a renovated and renewed Founders golf course with upgraded greens and bunkers to having a new upscale casual dining room, fitness center, and childcare space, there will be something new for every member. During the critical construction period, there will be inconveniences and unforeseen challenges that might impact your Greystone experience. The staff and construction team will do everything possible to anticipate issues and help make your experience memorable. We will be providing weekly email updates on the progress of the projects. If you miss these, contact Communications Director Mallory Bobba at [email protected] or (205) 986-5147 to make sure you’re on the Greystone email list.

Greystone Gators—Congratulations to the Championship Gator Swim Team! This year, the Gators, made up of 90 swimmers, was led by Allie Davis and Alan Parsons. They completed an undefeated regular season in division 3 and then were moved to division 2, a more challenging level, at the Senior County Championship Meet. The team responded and won the much more difficult division 2. I certainly hope all swimmers had a great summer, and thanks to our coaches, Aquatics Director Corinne Sweet, and all of the parents who encouraged and supported the Gators!

Babies—Congratulations to Fitness Director Christy Thompson and her husband Neil on the birth of their son, Remy. Congratulations to Maintenance Engineer Phil Rankin and Anneetress on the birth of their son, Neo. Our Tennis Department also had two new arrivals not long ago – Co-Director of Tennis, Ryen Valentine gave birth to baby girl Elliot, and Court Maintenance, Alex Gamble gave birth to baby boy Alexander. There must be something in the water!

Personal—It is hard to believe that my son, Marshall will be a senior in college at Auburn. He is enjoying the family environment at Auburn, and is a student recruiter and the vice president of his fraternity. I couldn’t be more proud of him for his dedication to his studies (he got that from his mom), his devotion to his faith, and being active at his school.

As always, I look forward to seeing you and your family at Greystone.

Dear Members,

What an exciting time for our Club with all of the projects happening! It won’t be long before we

open the Founders Course after the renovation. With the project in the hands of the Champions Tour Agronomy Team along with Greystone’s Director of Golf Course Operations Jason Miller, I believe everyone will be more than pleased with the end result. We expect to have some growing in/healing time in order to get greens back to the smooth roll that we are accustomed to. We ask for your patience during this important time.

Cleanup on Aisle Three

Over the past several months, we’ve spent many hours on the course looking closely at different areas seeing how we can improve. One glaring opportunity is to improve on our housekeeping. There are a multitude of cigarette and cigar butts left around the course daily as well as broken tees and general trash. Please help keep your courses in pristine condition by putting broken tees and cigarette and cigar butts as well as any other trash in the golf cart and let us clean it out at the end of your round. We also have ash trays that fit in the cup holder, just let us know that you need one. The key ingredient that all excellent clubs possess is their ability to work together as a team with everyone pulling in the same direction. That is what makes Greystone such an incredible club! If we continue to get involved and help make a difference, there’s no ceiling to how amazing our club can be!

Club Cleaning Bucket Challenge

I am challenging all of our members to take the “Club Cleaning Bucket Challenge!” Do something positive for Greystone Golf & Country Club and its members and I will award you the $20 coupon below. You must be able to state what you did for the Club to deserve (20) “goodwill bucks” to spend in the Founders Golf Shop.

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Dear Members,

Fall and football are upon us. It has been a fantastic summer at the Stone with participation in all of our coaching programs continuing to grow. Our Junior Development players have had success in local and regional tournaments while handicaps in our Biggest Loser programs continue to

drop! We are continuing these programs year-round and will be changing the schedule to accommodate college football on Saturdays so the membership can continue to improve while still enjoying tailgating.

The new Golf Teaching Center to be known as the Greystone Performance Center begins construction this month with completion set for January 2015. This will provide us a nucleus for the teaching program and a year-round facility from which to teach, coach and educate golfers to play better more often. The facility will have three state of the art teaching bays which will feature high speed, high definition cameras, 3D motion capture technology, SAM Puttlab, Video Lesson, force and pressure plates. This will provide the ultimate learning environment for our membership regardless of the climate!

We continue to stay busy with the Aimpoint Express clinics which are held twice a month in a group setting and available individually by appointment. Tour players are embracing this green reading technique to increase their strokes gained on the field. Everyone who has taken the two hour clinic leaves with a better understanding of how and why good putters make more putts! There is great article on the PGA tour website highlighting the benefits of what we’re offering with the Aimpoint Express clinics - http://www.pgatour.com/statsreport/2014/08/26/strokes-gained-the-barclays-hunter-mahan.html. The Wednesday E-News will have Aimpoint Express dates posted in it, or if you have a group that would like to get together for a private clinic, please contact Mason, [email protected] or (256) 505-9693 or myself.

I will be busy traveling for the Web.com and FedEx Playoffs during September but am excited to be back teaching this fall helping you, the members reach your golfing goals.

Best wishes,

Ahh, yes, I took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge!

Dear Members,

How Far Do You Hit It?

This is a question we ask every player that comes in for a fitting. With over 1,000 players fit since the TMPL opened its doors 4 years ago, we still find it amazing that most players really do not know the average distance or maximum distance of every club in their bag. The VAST majority of all golfers overestimate the distances they hit each club. With all of the resources available at Greystone G&CC, it is somewhat interesting that so few members who take the game seriously take the time to find this out. We recently added GPS to our golf cart services. This system accurately tells you distances to any part of the course from the cart’s location. What good is that system if a player doesn’t know how far each club goes?

Technology today has introduced us to the era of the “Launch Monitor.” These tools are used to take a multitude of different measurements and make other calculations about the flight of the ball and motion of the club through impact. One of the most fundamental functions of these tools is to show the distance each shot is hit. After a player hits a sample of shots with one particular club, we can calculate the average and maximum distance hit (after eliminat-ing the worst 20% of all strikes taken in the sample). MOST players find that their average distances and maximum distances are quite different from their perceptions after going through this process. Some players find that some of their clubs produce shots that are redundant in distance. Others find that they have large gaps between some clubs that they didn’t expect. The bottom line is, we have every tool available to help members determine this crucial infor-mation that can drastically effect their golf games.

If you are curious as to just how far you REALLY hit each club, and want to verify your perception against reality, call us in the Lab sometime and we can schedule a distance gapping session!

Dear Members,

Wow! What a season! Despite the rainy days, you all were out at the Pools in full force on sunny days and supported your Club! You set attendance records for May and July, and therefore made this the second busiest summer in Greystone’s history (with September days

remaining). Thank you so much!

You might think your chance at having a party at the Pools is gone, but it’s not! We will continue hosting pool parties in the Family Pool until September 21st. Private parties are only available during non-operational hours. If during operational hours, parties will receive a reserved section on deck. Please contact our Events Director, Amanda Osburne at [email protected] or at 776-3180 to book your party today!

Labor Day is bittersweet for us – it signals that the pool season end is near but that glorious football season is here! See page 6 for the day’s events at the Pools. After Labor Day, the Family Pool, Baby Pool & Pool Grill will be open for three additional Sundays: the 7th, 14th and 21st. The Adult Pool, though, is open daily until the 21st for those who have completed the Waiver of Liability.

Get your paws ready for our 6th Annual Doggie Dip on Sunday, September 21st from 4-6pm in the Family Pool! Open swim, diving board fun and ice cream for just $5 per dog. Even if you don’t have a dog, come out and enjoy the show because this is single-handedly the funniest event at Greystone. Canine swim suits optional but best outfit will take home a prize!

PLEASE bring back our Pool Towels! Please search your homes, cars, etc. for our blue and white striped towels, and return them anytime to either the drop-off bin in the Pool Park-ing Lot or the front desk of the Founders Clubhouse. Thank you!

Doggies get the final dip in the pool on September 21st

UNDEFEATED Gators Swim Team & Senior County Recap The best compliments our team received this year were all the referrals we got registered on the team! We had a 40% growth going from 67 Gators to 94 this year, and we couldn’t have done it without your recommendations to your friends. We never put a cap on registration because swimming is a sport where EVERYONE gets to participate in the meets and the more the merrier. Help us grow to over 100 next year and we’ll get to offer even more exciting events for the Gators!

Nearly half of the 94 Gators led by first season Coaches Allie Davis & Alan Parsons, qualified for the Senior County Championship which was held at the Birmingham Crossplex! Congratulations to all swimmers whose hard work paid off:

Ward Lockhart (12) not only took home 1st overall in Boys 11-12, but he also BROKE THE COUNTY RECORD for 50 yd Backstroke! The previous record was set back in 1999 with a time of 29.52 and Ward got 29.43. He also broke the Club’s records for 50 yd Breast (previously set by Alex Baker in 2008), 50 yd Free and 50 yd Back (both previously held by William McKinney since 2008). Elena Steed (6) placed 2nd overall in Girls 6 & under. She also broke the Club’s records for 25 yd Back (previously set by Anna Laura Held back in 2006), 25 yd Breast & 25 yd Fly (both previously held by Kara Coleman since 2010). Juliana Steed (8) placed 2nd overall in Girls 7-8 and she broke the Club’s record for 25y d Fly which was previously set by Anna Laura Held in 2008. Taylor Trible (10) placed 3rd overall in Girls 9-10 and broke Anna Laura’s record for 50 yd Back! She has been working towards that ALL summer! Riley Hiers (14) placed 10th overall in Boys 13-14. Luke McKay (17) placed 3rd overall in Boys 15-18.

Every swimmer that went did an excellent job including Jaxi & Josi Arterburn, Emily Clifton, Fenn David, Webb Harper, John Hayden, Mary Madison Hiers, Haley Lockhart, Connor & Liam Lozick, Gavin Major and Ashley Trible. For most of these Gators, it was their first time qualifying for Senior County and we are so proud that they chose to go.

The 19 swimmers that participated in the Senior County Championship were honored at the End-of-the-Season Awards Banquet on August 17th. We hope even more qualifying swimmers will attend this awesome meet next year.

Have a great fall, winter and spring! See y’all next summer!

A Message from Your Directors Wow, the summer sure flew by! We had a wonderful summer here at the Greystone tennis courts. Our kids competed hard at the two biggest junior tournaments of the year with our very own Sage Sovic and Connor Coleman winning the state champion-ships for their age divisions! The pros also took 16 of our juniors to Atlanta to watch the Atlanta Open pro tournament. For many of them, it was their first chance to get to see a pro tournament! We will have our next junior USTA tournament the weekend of September 26th-28th! September also brings in Fall Ladies Softcourt season, as well as USTA and Ladies Interclub leagues. We would like to wish all of our teams good luck and good health for the upcoming tennis season!
