Autumn Fall, leaves turn colors. Summer
has official past, which calls for another
service year. I hope you are all ready to
start off this new service year, with goals
that have never been set. This will be the
year that you leave your foot prints
behind, and be remembered for your
achievements.
During this month we had our Fall Rally
with several Districts which include 8,8-
A,9,10,11 & 12. I hope you all had a
great time and had the opportunity to
meet many other key clubbers. After this
Fall Rally, most of you should know your
duties and role within your club. If you
guys have any questions feel free to
message me, I will be more than happy to
answer them. Remember no question is a
bad question, so ask away!

When I had heard that all officers were being forced to attend Fall Rally, I really wasn't looking
forward to it at all, and I was very sure that it was going to be the same as last year's. When I
actually got to Stuy, something seemed different and I wasn't sure how to describe it. Everyone
seemed happy despite it being very early. Many people had been excited to get into the auditorium
and begin this year's Fall Rally, but to be honest, I really wasn't expecting much. I think my mood
changed when within the first 10 minutes of the welcome speech, people were already laughing.
After the welcome, I had decided to attend the Fundraising workshop. The description of this
workshop wasn't one that would catch anyone's eye, but I decided to go to it anyway. This
workshop turned out to be very fun. We had participated in ice breakers and had learned a
fundraising acronym called MAPLE. After that, there was a guest speaker from the Thirst Project to
talk about the global water crisis. We had learned that around 1billion people do not have access to
fresh water and that can bring about many diseases and even death. This presentation really spoke
to me and I just wanted to build wells myself. After lunch, we had workshop 2. Workshop 2 was all
about the positions one can run for, for office. The district secretary was incredibly nice and she
managed to be humorous all while giving us the information we needed to be able to be a successful
secretary.

On September 27th, I attended Fall Rally, which consisted of 6 different
divisions, which was held at Stuyvesant High School. I'm so glad I attended
this event because I was able to meet so many new people, not only from my
own division, but from other schools of different areas of New York as well. I'm
also glad that I was able to catch up with some old friends that I don't really
get to see often. I really loved playing telephone as our ice breaker because
the results of the game was pretty interesting...I'm also glad that I got to learn
more about membership recruitment, my responsibilities as a president, more
about Key Club, and various projects that we could do. I'm glad I went to this
event, and I would recommend it to other Key Clubbers who have just joined
our family, to those who would like to know more Key Club and the different
tasks involved for each position. Overall, I really enjoyed being able to interact
with others and become more comfortable with my socializing skills.

On September 20th, QHSS Key Club and I went to Applebee's to volunteer at a
flapjack breakfast held by our wonderful sponsoring Kiwanis, Robert and Veronica
Witherspoon. When the first table arrived, I felt incredibly nervous about messing
up or making a fool of myself because of the awkward silence and my lack of
experience, but after a while, I felt more and more comfortable with everyone and
the atmosphere of the restaurant changed with all the chatter and laughter. At first,
asking everyone what they wanted to drink was awkward since we did not know the
proper etiquette to do so. We also didn't know when to collect the tickets to place
the order, but with some trial and error, it got easier. Most everyone was satisfied
with the pancakes, scrambled eggs, and sausage links- especially us- and the raffle
was definitely a great ending to the delightful fundraiser with everyone frantically
checking their tickets to see if they had won something. Overall, the Applebee's
event was a great event that I would encourage more people to attend!

September Divisional Recap This divisional was different. Instead of our usual front-facing positioning with the chairs,
we faced the east side of the room with the tables in a cube. Veronica Witherspoon and Mr.
Jacoby made guest appearances along with an adorable little Key Clubber! There were the usual
review of events, including mentions of the Fall Rally and the upcoming Breast Cancer Walk.
Towards the end, there was a photo shoot with our Eliminate Instagram photo border. Overall,
this divisional went well and I look forward to seeing more Key Clubbers.

Light the Night Light the Night was a great way to kick off the Key Club service year. I
got to meet many Key Clubbers and I had an awesome time. It was great seeing
everyone enjoying themselves, and doing something for a great cause. I was
surprised by the amount of people that attended the event, because it showed how
much people were willing to help out those in need. The number of people was
overwhelming knowing that each contributed to the donation that further enhanced
the research for cures.

Eliminate Project SLP Subcommittee Application
The deadline for the Eliminate Project SLP Subcommittee Application is rapidly approaching! The committee provides its

Kiwanis Family in order to maximize our fundraising efforts in the final year of this campaign. Expectations for members on the
subcommittee include attending bi-weekly webinars, serving as a liaison to the International Board, and planning and
promoting SLP activities such as Eliminate Week.
Please promote this opportunity throughout your district because there are no requirements for applying. Whether you're a
club member, club officer, or district board member, there's a chance you'll be selected. Applications are due on Sunday,
August 31, 2014 no later than 11:59 PM EST. The application can be found at the link provided below.

Kiwanis International and UNICEF
partnered up to start Project Eliminate,
which will start in 2011 and end 2015.
The fundraising goal is 110 million dollars
by 2015 and reaching that goal will allow
Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus be eliminated.
The Eliminate Project is a project made to
fundraise money in order to eliminate
Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus.
Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus is a disease
which target specifically pregnant women
and their children. Those who are affected
are mainly in third world countries.
Newborn who are born with
Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus infected
babies are susceptible to muscle spasms,
painful seizures, pain from light, sound,
and touch. By providing Vaccines for
pregnant women and children, we can
eliminate this disease! Immunizing
newborn children and mothers only cost
$1.80 for 3 vaccines. Instead of buying
something worth $1.80 you can save a
mother and a newborn child life.

The Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International held
within the Kiwanis International Foundation. This fund uses earned interest to help Key
Clubs and Key Club members serve the world by providing grants for service
opportunities. The fund also provides academic scholarships for higher education. The
Youth Opportunities Fund is established through a portion of your Key Club International
dues and through the purchase of G. Harold Martin Fellowships. YOF grants can help you
take action. Look around and identify the things that need to get done in your school,
community or world.

The Make a Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children diagnosed with terminal diseases or with
life-threatening medical conditions in the United States every 38 minutes. “A wish can be a game
changer.” Whether it is granting them a chance to meet their favorite celebrity or giving them a toy, the
volunteers in this foundation can fill a child’s life with happiness.
The Facts:
1) The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a wish every 38 minutes.
2) The Make-A-Wish Foundation relies on the grassroots support of nearly 25,000 volunteers to
deliver the organization’s mission.
3) The Make-A-Wish Foundation granted the wishes of 13,007 children in 2007, the most ever
in the organization’s history. Since inception, the Foundation has granted more than
164,000 wishes.
There’s no place like St Jude. St Jude Children’s Research Hospital is the first and only National
Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. Its mission is to
advance cures through research and treatment.
The Facts:
1) Families never receive a bill from St. Jude
2) St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and around the world.
3) On average, St. Jude has more than 67,000 patient visits each year.
4) St. Jude has helped increase the survival rates for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) from
4% before opening in 1962 to 94% today.
5) Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate
from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since it opened in 1962.
6) Because the majority of St. Jude funding comes from individual contributors, St. Jude has the
freedom to focus on what matters most – saving kids regardless of their financial situation.
Goals:
Service Hour Goal: 65,000 service hours
Fundraising Goal: $75,000
