September Luncheon Presentation

Subsurface Review of Who Dat Field (MC 503/504/547)

By Eric Zimmermann

Abstract:

The MC 503 Prospect was leased in 2005, and subsequently drilled

in 2007. After the initial discovery well was drilled, the block MC

547 was leased in 2008. Appraisal and delineation wells were

drilled in 2010 to confirm the discovery and decide the most

appropriate means of developing the field. The field is geologically

interpreted as a prograding turbidite system. The deeper sands

(Upper Miocene) are interpreted to be basin floor fans which are

overlain by progressively more channelized facies (Lower Pliocene).

Geophysically, the majority of the events are Class III amplitude

anomalies, with the exception of the oldest and deepest horizon

which is Class II. After cross plotting log to seismic parameters, a

strong correlation was found between net pay and amplitude

strength. Because the pay zones in the field are sub-tuning, this

correlation was critical in resource mapping and determining the

original reserves in the field.

President’s Corner by Hao Zhou

Dear SGS members,

I hope you all have recovered from hurricane Isaac

and are back to normal work and life. After four

and a half years in New Orleans, finally I feel I am

qualified as a true New Orleanian - although I still

need to work on my accent. This is after scrambling

to buy canned food, water, candles, etc. the day

before the hurricane, staying awake in the hot and

humid nights during the hurricane, and clumsily

(with sweaty hands) covering my roof damage in

the aftermath. However, I don’t complain because I

know that years later, this will be my cool story to

tell in some other part of the world.

It is my honor to serve as SGS president for SGS for

the 2012-2013 year. First, I would like to thank the

previous committee members for their dedications.

In addition, as I mentioned during the luncheon,

several individuals in particular should be

recognized for their passion to our community:

Don Dubose, Eric Zimmermann, Christy Gautre,

Richard Mongan, Ken Reynold and Toby Roesler.

Most of them were not serving as committee

members last year but they have been contributing

all the time. In this new season I will continue to

rely on more members like them to make this year

successful.

Last year I served as the 2nd vice president, and my

headache was to get enough attendance for every

luncheon and event. On average we have about

twenty five people attending each luncheon.

Particularly bad for the instructor, we only had

fifteen people for the SEG distinguished lecturer.

This year I would like to focus on increasing the

number of active members and improving on

member involvement.

Now what can we do to make SGS grow and

become more attractive?

After discussion with several committee members,

these are some items we think we should work on:

1) Continue to improve on quality of

presentations for luncheons

2) Bring a good class to SGS

3) Increase content variety on the monthly

Reflections newsletter

4) Hold several successful social events

5) Build strong ties with local universities for

student members

Do you agree? Here is my request to you: if you are

asked to provide an idea to SGS to improve on any

aspect of our community, what would that be?

Please email the editor <[email protected]>

and describe it. We will list all the ideas in the next

reflection anonymously.

This year I will be working with great committee

members: Shane, Ellen, Patricia, Na, and Tonya.

Many of us are less experienced, but I know we

have plenty of support from our enthusiastic

members. I believe with our energy and your ideas,

we will make this SGS year memorable!

Page 4: September Luncheon Presentation INSIDE THIS ISSUE · After the initial discovery well was drilled, the block MC 547 was leased in 2008. Appraisal and delineation wells were drilled

Lastly, let me mention several near term events:

1) Membership renewal for the new season –

please don’t forget! <http://sgs-

neworleans.org/>

2) October luncheon will be on the 11th

3) November. 5th – joint luncheon with NOGS

at Holiday Inn – we will send out the

registration announcement at a closer date

4) Fall social event is in planning

Here’s to an exciting new year!

Focus on Fundamentals

This is a section designed for members to share easy-to-read, high quality scientific journal articles to be used

as learning resources for novices and refreshers for experienced scientists. The articles are not limited to the

geophysics discipline. The collection of this section will be added to the ‘Useful Links’ of the SGS website for

future reference. Only the name of the journal, issue number and page numbers are provided in consideration

of copyright issues.

All SGS members, please share your recommendations with our SGS editor for monthly publication in the

Reflections.

September’s Recommendation submitted by Hao Zhou

Pore pressure terminology published on The Leading Edge, V21, 2002 Page 170-173

Pore pressure prediction is important for drilling, completion, water injection, etc., and geophysics provides

major input for its derivation. This article provides a simple explanation of different terms we encounter when

working with pore pressure. In consideration that the subject of our joint luncheon with NOGS is about pore

pressure, this article serves as a good appetizer for those not as familiar with the topic.
