Publisher’s Note

Our Schools Our TownAs summer comes to a close and September brings about the beginning of the new school year, the season of change is upon us For kids, the new school year brings excitement to see old friends and meet new ones, anticipation of new subjects to be learned, and anxiety over what their new teachers will be like For parents, it is a time to charge forth and stock up on new school supplies and clothes for their children For our schools, it brings new principals, new chal-lenges on how to do more with less, and new opportunities to improve upon all facets of the education processFor Our Schools Our Town magazine, the most immediate change you will notice is that we have a new print format, switching to 10-1/2 by 11 inches from 8-1/2 by 11 inches The larger format not only allows for a more interesting layout, but is also more economical, allowing us to do more for less What hasn’t changed is that we are still your source for information about Redwood City schools, events, businesses and organizations in our community We will continue to include news and information from the Redwood City School District, the Redwood City Education Foundation, local community events, and local businesses and organi-zations—all directed toward the Redwood City students, parents and communityThanks for letting us share this information with you We hope this school year brings success for your students, our schools and our communityPaul Maynes Publisher Our Schools Our Town

Our staff has been hard at work setting goals and coming up with strategies to help your children achieve success in school this year We are ready to greet our students and get started! We are a district of heart, hope and optimism, and that is re-flected in the can-do attitude exhibited by the many adults who invest in our students -- teachers, principals, librarians, nurses, school custodians, parent and community volunteers, and local community leaders No matter what is being dis-cussed in Sacramento, our leaders are focused on making sure that your students are learning what they need to have success in high school and beyondThis year, we have two new principals joining our team, and I would like to tell you about these outstanding leaders and what they will bring to our district:

Kennedy Principal David PaliughiMr David Paliughi most re-cently served as Program Manager and Principal at Sanger Unified School District, and prior to that he was the Prin-cipal at Wilson Elementary School in Sanger During the time that Mr Paliughi served as Principal at Wil-son Elementary, the school moved from a Year 4 Pro-gram Improvement School to a California Distinguished School and won a Title I Ac-ademic Achievement Award Besides serving as an el-ementary school principal, Mr Paliughi has been a con-tinuation high school principal, a guidance learning specialist and a nationally certified school psychologist. In accepting his new position, Mr Paliughi said, “I am hon-ored to be afforded the opportunity to lead the Cougars and I
