MISSIONSTATEMENT
The Toronto Community Orchestra (TCO) is an ensemble with an over 45-year history ofperformancesandservicetoourcity,andinparticulartoSeniors’Residences.Westrivetoperformmusicwhichwillprovideaccessibility,challengeandgrowthforourindividualmusiciansaswellasfortheorchestraasawhole;andwhichwillofferouraudiencesvariety,interestandpleasure.
OBJECTIVES
! Tocreateandmaintainanon-profit,volunteercommunityorchestra
! ToofferqualifiedamateurinstrumentalistsfromTorontoandsurroundingcommunitiesanopportunitytoperformorchestralmusic.Theorchestraisforthemostpartnon-auditioned,withsomeexceptionsatthediscretionoftheconductorandgeneralmanager.Theseexceptionsmayincludeprincipalchairpositionsinthestringsectionsandprincipalchairpositionsinthewindsections.
! ToofferconcertstothecommunityandtotheresidentsofLongTermCareFacilitiesinToronto.

TheGeneralManagercreatesacontactlistofallTCOmembersanddistributesthistotheConductor,theExecutive,theConcertmaster,SectionLeaders,andtheMusicDirectorofEastminster,inordertofacilitatethedisseminationofinformation.TheGeneralManagerwillalsosendtheorchestracontactlisttoallorchestramembers,providedpermissionisgivenbyeachorchestramember.
FEESThefeesare$60.00perterm(2termsperseason).Ifyouhaveanyhardshipinmeetingthefeeschedule,pleasedonothesitatetospeakwiththeGeneralManagerortheBoardChair.Feescoversomeofthecostsforhonorariums,musicpurchasesandrentals,printing/photocopying,insuranceandgeneralorchestraexpenses.

WerehearseonTuesdayeveningsandalsoscheduleourperformancesonTuesdayevenings.Occasionally,underspecialcircumstances,wewillscheduleaperformanceforadifferentdayandtime,otherthanTuesdayevenings.Theseconcertswillonlytakeplaceonlyifenoughpeopleareabletocommittothedateinquestion.OnoccasionEastminsterchurchisrequiredforanotherfunctionandwetrytoschedulearehearsalatanalternativelocation.

Weallcometoenjoyourselvesbymakingmusic,togrowinourmusic-makingcapabilitiesandtoenjoythecompanyofotherswhosharethoseobjectives.Thefollowingguidelinesaredesignedtoensurethatwecanmakethishappen.

" TheConductordeterminessectionplacementandseating,inconsultationwiththeConcertmaster/mistress,SectionLeadersandGeneralManager.
" Pleaseassistinassemblingtherisers,andplacingthedrumsinpositionpriortorehearsalandinsettingoutthechairs.
" Rehearsalbeginspromptlyat7:30pmwithatuningpitch.Pleasearriveatrehearsalby7:10sothatyoucanhelpwiththeorchestrasetupandarereadywithyourstandandmusicinplacepriortothetuningpitch.Itisdisruptivetomakeahabitofsqueezingintoone'sseatafterrehearsalhasbegun.However,latearrivalisalwayspreferabletonon-arrival.Inourbusylives,occasionaltardinessisunderstandable.
" Aftertuning,theGeneralManagerwillmakeanynecessaryannouncements.Orchestramemberswhohaveannouncementstheywishtomaketotheorchestramaydosoatthistime.

" SectionalswillbescheduledperiodicallybytheconductorandwillbeformattedlargelyaccordingtotheavailabilityofroomswiththeChurch.
" OccasionallytherewillbeaneventtakingplaceatEastminsterwhichwillprecludeourrehearsingthere.Everyeffortwillbetakentofindanalternatevenuetorehearse,andmemberswillbenotifiedasearlyaspossiblebyemail.
" ItisimperativethatyoucheckyouremaileachTuesdaybeforeleavingforrehearsal,toensurethatyouhavenotmissedanynotificationsregardingtherehearsal(ie.Lastminutecancellation,changeofvenue,etc.)
Rehearsalpointers
• Doublecheckthatyouhaveyourmusic,instrument(ingoodworkingorder),musicstandandwhateverotheritemsyoumayrequire,suchasrosin,asparereedoramute.Bringapencil.
• Writedownbowingsandmusicaldirectionsasinstructed.EachstringSectionLeaderwillprovidebowingstohisorhersection.Pleaseputthesebowingsintoyourmusicassoonaspossibleafterreceivingthem.
• Pleasedonotnoodlearoundorpracticewhiletheconductoristalking.Otherscannotheartheconductorifyouaretalkingorpracticing.

• Positionyourselfsothatyouandyourstandpartnerhaveenougharmandlegroomandcanseethemusiccomfortablywithintheconstraintsofthespaceavailable.MakesurethatyoucanseetheConductor,andadjustyourstandheightsothattheConductorisinyourperipheralview.
• TuningnotesshouldnotsurpassamezzopianovolumesotheplayersaroundyoucanhearthemselvesaswellasthetuningA.Pleasedonottalkduringtuning.
• Ifyouneedtocommunicatesomethingtoyourstandpartner,dosoasquietlyaspossible.MakesurethatanyonenexttoyouwhorequiresassistanceinhearinginstructionsfromtheConductorishelped.
• Ifyouhavequestionsaboutsomethinginthescoreorhowapassageshouldbeplayed,raiseyourhandandasktheConductorduringrehearsalorapproachyourSectionLeaderduringabreak.
• Ifyouaresharingastand,theinsideplayer(orplayerfurtherfromtheedgeofthestage)turnsthepages.Playersontheoutside(closestotheedgeofthestage)playthetoplineofadivisisection,whiletheinsideplayerplaysthebottom,unlessotherwisedirectedbytheConductororSectionLeader.

ATTENDANCE&MUSIC
Attendance
Membersareencouragedtomakerehearsalattendanceapriority.
Evenifyouareonlyasinglememberoflargesection,yourpresence(orabsence)makesadifferencetoyourstandpartner,yoursectionandtothebalanceoftheorchestra.Importantthingsarecommunicatedbytheconductoreachrehearsalandthereforeconsistentattendanceiscrucial.Attendanceatrehearsalsleadinguptoaconcertisespeciallyimportant.Ifyouhavetomissarehearsal,pleasecheckwithothersinyoursectionforanychangesmadeduringtherehearsalthatyouwereunabletoattend.
AbsencesneedtobebyusingtheAbsencesdocument.Thisisessentialasithelpstoinformtheconductorwhatmaybethebestrehearsalschedule.
Ifyouhaveanattendanceissue(eg.travelplans,afamilysituationoraworkcommitment),pleasetalkthisoverwiththeConductorandtheGeneralManager.Theymaywishtoarrangeforasubtocomein.
TheConductormayrequestmembersto“sitout”aconcertduetoerraticattendanceatrehearsals.
OrchestramembersNOTabletoplayascheduledconcertshouldnotifytheConductorandOrchestraManagerassoonaspossibleandworkwithhim/hertofindasubifnecessary.
Ifyoufindthatlifehasbecomesobusythatyouareunabletoattendrehearsalsregularly,pleasetalktotheGeneralManagerabouttakingaleaveofabsencefromtheorchestrafortheterm.

Musicwillbedistributedtomemberswellbeforethecommencementoftheterm..
ThemusicwilleitherbesentforthemembertodownloadfromIMSLPorasaPDFfileforeachmembertoprintorwillbehandedoutinafoldertobereturnedattheendoftheconcert.
Bowingswillbesentforstringsectionsusuallybyemail.SeeyourSectionLeaderforfurtherinformation.
Everyeffortismadewhenchoosingrepertoiretofindmusicthatincludesallinstrumentswithinourorchestra,butthisisnotalwayspossible.TheConductorwilldohis/herbesttoschedulerehearsalssothatthereisnotalotofwaitingaroundtimeforthosemusiciansnotplayingeverypiece,butagain,thisisnotalwayspossible.Yourpatienceandunderstandingisappreciated.
CONCERTSDetailedinformationaboutthelocation,parking,transitandinstrumentroomwillbecommunicatedtoallmembersviaemailtheweekbeforeeachawayConcert.
AttheconclusionofeachofourWinterandSpringconcerts,weholdareceptionformusiciansandaudience.Weaskthateachmemberbringsomesortoffingerfoodforthisreceptionandbewillingtohelpthesocialcoordinatorsifrequiredforset-uporclean-up.
Wesometimespartnerwithothercommunityorganizationstoperformfortheirconcertseriesorinfundraisersthatjointlybenefittheirorganizationandourorchestra.UnlikeourregularlyscheduledperformanceseachseasontheseeventsmaynottakeplaceonTuesdayevenings.Memberswillbeaskedtoindicatewhethertheywouldbeavailabletoparticipateintheseextraconcerts,andifsufficientmembersarewillingtocommit,wewillaccepttheinvitation.

ThechurchprovidesuswithrehearsalspaceandconcertspaceforourtwoFinalconcertsonarent-freebasis.Ourcontractwiththechurchstatesthatweinturnwillprovidemusiciansfor8Eastminstermusicalservicesduringtheyear.Allmembersmustbewillingtoparticipateinthiscommitmentiftheirschedulemakesitpossible.AttherequestoftheEastminsterMusicDirector,emailswillbesentouttotheorchestratoaskforvolunteerstoplayspecificinstrumentsonspecificdates.MostEastminsterrequestsforperformancesbyourorchestra’smusiciansareforthechurch’smorningserviceonSundayswhichstartsat10:30am.andisusuallyoverby12:00noonatthelatest.Rehearsalsfortheseservicesusuallytakeplaceat9:15am.OtherdatesforwhichourparticipationisoftenrequestedincludeRemembranceDayServices,theChristmasCandlelightandChoirsService,apostChristmasService,GoodFridayandEasterSundayServices.

OrchestraPositionDescriptions
" ConductorandArtisticDirector
TheArtisticDirectorprovidestheartisticvisionofTheTorontoCommunityOrchestraandisresponsiblefortheleadershipanddirectionofeveryaspectoftheperformancesbytheorchestra.TheArtisticDirectorworkswiththeExecutiveCommitteeintheorganizationoftheorchestra.ThepositionofArtisticDirectorisavolunteerpositionwithanhonorarium.ArtisticManagement
• Providesoverallartisticleadershipanddirectiontotheorchestra,andsoloists,ifany.• Chooserepertoireappropriatefortheorchestraandconcertvenues,givingconsiderationtothe
inputfromtheexecutive’sresource/librarian,orchestramembersandconcertvenuesifapplicable.(Wehaveamodestmusiclibraryhousedin2filingcabinetsattheChurch,andoftenavailourselvesofmusicfromtheonlineIMSLP(Petrucci)PublicDomainWebsite.Sometimesweareabletoborroworrentmusicfromotherorchestralibraries).Theyearisdividedintotwoterms,withdifferentrepertoireprogrammedforeach

• Inconsultationwiththeorchestramanagerandwithsectionheadsasappropriate,reviewsandparticipatesintheselectionofpotentialorchestramembers.Theorchestramanagerisresponsibleforcorrespondingwithandrespondingtopotentialmembersbyeitherputtingthemonthewaitinglistorlettingthemknowoftheiracceptance.
• Conductsallweeklyrehearsalsandconcerts(Tuesdaysfrom7:30-9:30pm)foranapproximatelynine-monthseasonfromSepttomid-May.Thisincludesatleast2concertsatLongTermCareHomesandoneWinterconcertatEastminsterattheendofthefirsttermie.lateNovember/earlyDecemberand2concertsatLongTermCareHomesandoneSpringconcertatEastminsterinlateApril/earlyMay.

especiallyourhostchurch,EastminsterUnitedChurch.Liaiseandco-planwiththeMusicDirectorofEastminsterUnitedChurch,regardinganyproposedjointconcertsbetweentheorchestraandtheChurchChoir.
• Helpstorecruitextramusiciansforconcertsifneeded.(smallhonorariumsareusuallyavailabletopayUofTstudentstohelpoutwithconcerts)forpartsthataredeemedtobeessentialaremissing.
HumanResources• Iftheartisticdirector’sservicesarenotrequiredforthenextseasonoriftheArtisticDirector
decidesnottoreturnforthenextseason,thisdecisionmustbemadebyeitherpartybyFebruary1stofthecurrentseasoninorderthatasearchforanewArtisticDirectorcanbecompletedsuccessfullyandinatimelymanner.
