Aaron Nathaniel Reyes of Victoria was sentenced to 25 years in prison last week for his part in a violent home invasion in the Telfair subdivision nearly one year ago.
Shortly before 10 pm, on a Monday night in late September of 2012, a Sugar Land woman answered a knock at her front door of her Baldwin Crossing home to men purporting to be pizza delivery. As the victim soon learned, the men at her front door were not delivery
men of any sort; they forced their way into her home at gunpoint and beat her in the head in the process. The
men ransacked her home taking televisions, cash, jewelry, phones, and the family’s 2003 Toyota Camry. In December of 2012 Sugar Land Police identified Maydevis Molina, 23,

Land hopes to have a network of sidewalks, trails and connections to make it possible to walk or ride your bike from one end of the city to the other. Or, for the less ambitious, make it easier to take a short trip from Point A to Point B.
A task force has been working
on the Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan for the last 18 months and it is moving toward final adoption. The plan is an updated version of 2008's Hike and Bike Trails Master Plan and aims to create an urban trail system that would make it possible for residents to walk or ride bikes virtually anywhere in the city.
"It was suggested that we
Sugar Land striving to become a hike & bike city
should revisit the hike and bike trails master plan to address not just recreational trips but non-recreational trips," said Patrick Walsh, Sugar Land's Director of Transportation.

By Elsa Maxey It appears that so far the
only public comment relating to the county’s new budget to be adopted in a matter of days has come from Kim Janke of Fairchild. Although a county agenda item addressed by Janke was not about the new budget but proposed pay hikes, the end result directly impacts the budget, which has been under development since the beginning
of the year and is set for a couple of public hearings this month.
It’s important to note that Fort Bend County reports its budget reflects more revenue from property taxes than last year by $12,633,660, a 4.61 percent increase. New property taxes from this year amounted to $7,629,353. The county’s debt obligation is $654,220,000 among which $347,555,000 is Fort Bend County debt, $151,580,000 belongs to the Fort

Each August, Stafford City Council and SMSD Board of Trustees hold a special joint budget session to adopt the year’s new budget. These boards meet monthly beginning in January to begin their work preparing the budget so that on the night of the special joint budget meeting, there are no surprises. This is also because of SMSD’s proclivity for transparency. Mayor Leonard
Scarcella said, “We do what virtually no other city in Texas does, and we are proud of that.”
On the evening of this meeting the mood among the trustees and council members was festive. School had been in session for four days and the new and remodeled campuses were open for business; an instant success with students and teachers. Superintendent Dr. Lance Hindt remarked that “smiles were on all the students’ faces” and that
No rate increase in school taxes for Staffordthe budget was a “conservative, frugal budget that provides for our students and staff.”
After the opening remarks were made, Dr. Hindt announced that the district’s attendance, as of that day, was at 3,490. A school record. He expects the number to top out around 3,500. Last year, the average daily attendance was 3,188. In the past five years the District has grown 14%. Kids
Input sought from Sugar Land residents on future water needs for master planBy Elsa Maxey
Next Monday, the City of Sugar Land will have solicited public input for its water master plan and if you make it to the meeting, you’re bound to know where water that runs from your faucet originates and much more.
The city’s process to update its Water Master Plan next week will include a variety of opportunities for the community to provide input and feedback, reports the city. Topics relating to drought management, water use and conservation are essential components of a water master plan that was last updated in 2007.
The September 9 meeting
at city hall from 6-8 p.m. will include a presentation about the plan update, the city’s plans for future water needs, and there will also be a review of community input that has already been gathered, according to the city. Residents, who may have already been in touch
with the city about a variety of water issues, will in all likelihood have their comments and concerns factored into the development of the updated plan.

What steps should I take to find the hearing aid which will work best for me?
A few tips listed on Mayo Clinic’s Health Information site at www.mayoclinic.com include some of the following suggestions:
1. Get an evaluation to rule out a medical condition which
may need to be treated. And make sure that you have your hear-
ing tested by an audiologist.2. Ask for a referral to an audiologist. An audiologist will work
with you to find the best hearing aid for you. Be careful about free consultations and places that sell only one brand of hearing aid.
3. Get information about a trial period. Make sure you have in writing the cost of a trial and the final cost of the hearing aid.
4. Consider your future needs and make sure the hearing aid will have enough residual amplification in case your hearing should get worse.
5. Check to make sure your hearing aid comes with a warranty to cover repairs.
6. Beware of false claims such as restoring normal hearing or eliminating all background noise.
7. Be prepared for the expense of hearing aids. The cost of these devices varies dramatically. Extra hearing aid features, and pro-gramming and professional fees will cost extra. But there are still good products available at reasonable prices.

Can the insurance company refuse to work with the shop of my choice?
By law, an insurance company cannot refuse your request and must negotiate with the shop of your choice. However, the insurance company is not required to warranty the repair. Some shops warranty their own work, so if you choose a shop not authorized by the insurance company, address any concerns you may have directly with the shop. Remember it is in both parties’ best interest to get y our vehicle repaired correctly.

I’m thinking about using a DIY kit to refinish my tub. What results should I expect?
Do-it-yourself bathtub refinishing kits are marketed at home improvement centers as an easy way to fix a worn or damaged bathtub. Unfortunately, these kits more often than not lead to
disappointing results and eventual professional refinishing. We at Miracle Method know, as nearly 20% of the bathtubs we are re-doing are an amateur attempt at tub refinishing.
DIY kits use a hydrofluoric acid wash to etch the porcelain tub surface to help the new epoxy stick. Hydrofluoric acid etching is not only old technology, but can be dangerous. While epoxy is durable, it chips easily and eventually turns yellow. This method also often leads to eventual peeling of the new surface.
Miracle Method will professionally repair and refinish your tub to a glossy like-new look and feel. Our process includes removing the existing caulk, a thorough two step cleaning of the tub, and repairing any chips. Miracle Method’s non-acid MM-4 bonding agent will ensure the new coats of high tech acrylic urethane will adhere and provide an even surface, and a final buffing and polishing will make your tub shine like it did the day it was installed.
Miracle Method offers a five year warranty – that’s something you won’t find with a DIY kit!
My telephone bill is huge each month. Is there anything you can do to help reduce this cost?
Yes, we do this for customers everyday. If you are renting your telephone equipment from the local telephone company don’t feel like they are holding you hostage. You do have a choice. For example, if you have 4 telephone lines with DSL and you rent your telephone sets you are probably
paying the local telephone company around $400 a month plus long distance charges. Does this sound familiar? If this is your scenario, ProStar Communications can reduce your monthly bill to around $250 per month and you get FREE domestic long distance. That’s over a $1,800 savings a year. Now those are savings everyone will like.
No matter how many lines you have give us a call and we will be happy to give you a free analysis of what ProStar Communications can do for your specific needs.
If you have the type of business where you deal with your customers over the telephone instead of face-to-face, then a Virtual Office is the answer for you. With a virtual office, you can work from anywhere…..even from home. You can have your own telephone number with customized automated attendant and voice mail box greetings. There are other great features like having your voice mail messages sent to your cell phone, BlackBerry or E-Mail. You can have a telephone set at your house or work on a laptop Softphone anywhere there is internet. And the best part is your customers will never know if you are at an office, at your home or in a hotel on vacation.
ProStar Communications and Panasonic have many more solutions for your office communication needs. ProStar is an authorized Panasonic dealer serving the Fort Bend and Houston area since 1992. Please call us at 281.265.3500 for a free consultation to discuss your needs for today and into the future.
At Classic Chevrolet we always get ask the question “What are the Benefits of Nitrogen in Tires”
Compressed nitrogen has long been used to inflate the tires of race cars and aircraft. Regular air is approximately 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen and 1 percent water vapor. The oxygen and water vapor can degrade tires and wheels, shortening tire life. Nitrogen
inflation is now available from many commercial and passenger car dealers.
Slower Inflation Pressure Loss - A tire inflated with regular compressed air will lose about one and a half to two psi of pressure per month. Most of the pressure loss is due to oxygen molecules permeating through the tire rubber. Replacing the air with 95 to 98 percent nitrogen reduces the pressure loss to less than one-half psi per month. Since many drivers do not regularly check their air pressure, nitrogen inflation will allow their tires to maintain proper inflation levels longer. The major benefit of properly inflated tires is optimum
Oxygen can cause oxidation of tire rubber and corrosion of metal and alloy wheels. The water vapor in air can accelerate these processes, especially under pressure like the compressed air in a tire. The corrosive effects of both oxygen and water vapor are multiplied when a tire overheats due to under-inflation. Nitrogen is an inert gas and will not cause corrosion or rust. Nitrogen also will not degrade the seals in air valves, further preventing pressure loss.
Improved Tire Life - Using nitrogen to pressurize tires has benefits over regular air for tire longevity. The greatest threats to tire life are heat and uneven tread wear. Both of these result from improper tire pressure; using nitrogen will maintain a more even tire pressure over the life of a tire. Also, the rubber inner lining of a tire will degrade over time in an air environment. As the rubber lining degrades, air pressure will be lost faster, accelerating the effects of under-pressurization. Nitrogen will not cause the inner lining of a tire to degrade, extending its useful life. According to the Innovative Balancing website, inflating tires with nitrogen can extend tire life up to 25 percent.
Classic Chevrolet Nitrogen for Life - Classic Chevrolet will install Nitrogen in your tires for $39.95 for life. That means when you purchase Nitrogen for your Vehicle, all of your tires that you purchase from Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land for the life of that vehicle we will put nitrogen in them for free.

I’ve heard that putting video on my website will improve my search engine rankings. Is this true and how do we start? It is true. Google especially loves video. The first step in putting together any kind of video is to determine your target audience and decide what effect you want
to create with that audience. Do you want them to call you for more information? Perhaps feel more comfortable about your product or service? Visit your booth at an upcoming trade show? Invest money in your business venture? Or maybe order products from your website. Once those things have been decided, we would then tailor a project that speaks directly to their interests and needs. This begins with a script. There’s an old show business saying: “If it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage.” We would write a script that reflects what you want to say about your business, reaches your target audience and creates the effect you desire.
After the script is approved, we would then determine a shooting schedule and budget for the project. After the production is complete, we would edit the footage, voice-over narration and add music and titles to create a custom-produced project that shows off your business to potential customers and clients.
At Star Video Digital Productions, we can handle all aspects of production, from script writing through to post-production editing and compression for upload to your website. Call 281 690-4280 for a free consultation.
If you have experienced the sudden pain of foot and toe cramps, you know that the pain is usually short-lived. Unfortunately, however, cramps can become a regular occurrence. Cramps may be the result of having your feet in the same position for an extended period of time. Other underlying causes can include dehydration or some type of dietary deficiency. When experiencing foot or toe cramps, try removing your shoes and socks and attempt to “walk off” the cramps. Applying a heating pad and massaging the affected areas may relieve the pain. If the issue is dietary, add foods that are rich in calcium, magnesium, and potassium. If the cramping is persistent, see your podiatrist for appropriate professional care.
Our feet continuously feel the maximum amount of our weight as we walk and stand. This is why foot cramps are more common than other muscle spasms in the body. Long periods of exercise or physical labor, particularly in hot weather, may lead to muscle cramps. Some medications and certain medical conditions also may cause muscle cramps. We can advise and help you to make sure your feet stand up to years of wear and tear. Comprehensive, compassionate footcare is available at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. CRAMPING TRIP
required to sit through 10-15 hours of mind-numbing classroom training; it has now been reduced to 4-6 hours of information that just might change your life in the off chance you ever use that weapon.
While classroom time has changed, the range time has not; an applicant must still show proficiency at the firing range. Yep, it appears that sport’n that hog-leg with a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) is all the rage. Heck, a Bill to prevent Texans from “Carrying” using a license from another state was left in committee, so if a Texan doesn’t want to sit through that four hours of training, they can just apply online to another State, with even fewer requirements, then obtain a license there and use it here, in Texas.
There are 41 states that recognize CHL reciprocity with Texas CHL laws. However, it appears that the West Coast and many of the New England states are not so welcoming.
Yep, the Second Amendment is alive and well and coming to a grocery checkout near you.
Imagine if everyone was armed. Well, this IS Texas, and you can bet most are, with a license or without. So, just think about this – that neighbor, the one you think is so…silly. Imagine being behind her in the checkout line at the grocery store. Her toddler is acting a fool in the rumble seat of the basket; knocking cereal boxes out onto the floor, then you realize, as Momma is gathering up those boxes, she’s pack’n a pistol. Yep, there she is with heat on her hip. Really? She can’t control the kid, and she is licensed to throw bullets at
Have gun must conceal
unimaginable speed throughout the store! Oh, and don’t go there – you men are just as bad.
We all know, this is Texas where men are men and road kill is prevalent. Most home grown Texans have grown up with guns; they are familiar with them but often lack a real respect for their power. So, quite frequently they suffer from an occasional accidental discharge. Yes, sad to say but even in police agencies all across this county many a refrigerator, desk, file cabinet, or air duct have given their all for cops with an inadvertent discharge. And by the way, cops are well trained and qualify with guns regularly! The change in the amount of training time will only affect those who don’t really know or understand the use of deadly force.
That being said, the use of such deadly force affects all of us who roam the same streets, grocery aisles, shopping centers and neighborhoods.
So now that we have the mundane out of the way, let’s get to the real meat of this subject; What to carry with your gun!
It’s all about the ensemble. For you guys, a nice leather holster tucked quietly into the waistband of your trousers in a nice touch; however there is always the other option, the shoulder-holster. That pancake holster, you might want to re-think that, just say’n.
And for the ladies, you are NEVER going to achieve that fashion statement you are looking for without the proper accessories. I beg you, never, never ever put a gun in your purse and expect to use it as a weapon. Unless, you intend to hit someone with it! Inside that handbag, you are only ruining the strap on your purse and your shoulder. That gun needs to be carried on your person. Inside a handbag, you are only arming the crook that steals your purse. Just say’n, the chances of you realizing
that you are in jeopardy and having enough time to find your pistol in your purse, and take action - well, the chances are slim to none. So, now you are faced with holstering a concealed weapon.
About a year or so ago, I saw the perfect CHL accessory, Yep, it is Raspberry and ever so clever. It is a .380 caliber and made by a reputable gun manufacturer that could be set off with a nice zebra holster, yes’m now you have yourself a true fashion statement! And the crook you are going to arm with it, when they take it away - after your 4 hours of training…well, the woman in his life will appreciate it too.
There are some issues the Legislature forgot. Like how about giving the citizenry a heads up by making that handgun licensee carry that hog-leg where we can all see it? Shouldn't the public have the right to know who's pack'n.... so we can get away? Or at least contemplate where to tuck and roll if shooting starts and who 's got the guns.
While the four hours of classroom training will not stop accidental discharges, or stupid mistakes, it does reduce the amount of time that the CHL instructor can impress upon their students how pulling the trigger of a gun will forever change their lives. Few are against using deadly force in the protection of life but even in those circumstances that action lives with an individual forever.
In Texas, as in many other states carrying a gun is a personal choice, and with a CHL a legal one. However, the ramifications of that choice will have an effect on you, your family, and the entire community. Carrying and using a firearm can be a very heavy burden.

Light at the End of Carpal TunnelCarpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a painful hand condition caused by
the compression of a major nerve that is covered by a tunnel that occurs from the wrist to the hand. Compression of this nerve may lead to progressive pain, numbness, and weakness in the hands. People who suffer from CTS may feel tingling in all the fingers except the little pinky finger. Pain may radiate through the arm and shoulder. Many people have a tendency to drop objects because of the weakness in the hands. People who have certain conditions like diabetes and alcoholism may have a higher chance of CTS due to a higher tendency of nerve damage. Also, those who work with certain tools and in an assembly line may have a higher frequency of CTS.
While there is no cure for CTS, there are certain measures that can be taken to help reduce the progression of the disease. A wrist splint can be worn at night to help prevent any nighttime symptoms that cause awakening. Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) can be taken to help relieve shortterm pain. Corticosteroids such as methylprednisolone may be injected into the wrist to help prevent inflammation of the nerve. Surgical correction of the condition may be an option for certain individuals with severe symp toms.

Trust John Kerry, you know, the guy who threw his medals over the White House gate after returning from Viet Nam and who stood with Hillary on the Senate Floor, absolutely positive that there were WMDs (Weapons of Mass Destruction), advising
Bush to go to war. Now there is “high confidence” that chemical weapons were used and we need to attack Syria. Going into Egypt has been disastrous, Libya was unconstitutional and Syria will create grossly irreparable consequences. The Left’s No. 1

argument to defeat Bush was the cost of “all these wars.” Where is the Left now babbling about the cost of “all these wars”?The town halls across the country have been caustic. Graham refused to hold his, Rubio refused questions while others are trying to embarrass constituents by calling out their names before reading the question and then not answering the question. Both sides are now grasping how destructive Obamacare is—now with the 40,000-member ILWU ending their affiliation with the AFL-CIO. It is not only the difficulty
of implementation, but it ignores all rationality. The youth are supposed to be rewarded rather than penalized for being healthy. Rationality has been left at the door, with our kids now being unjustly penalized. Catastrophic issues with Long Term Care (LTC) premium holders will occur. After having made decades of premium payments (in order to receive proper care and protect one’s assets into old age), a LTC policyholder may now be denied access to his/her doctor. If a doctor’s authorization is not implemented for LTC, benefits for care cannot begin.
The mentally ill are already being dropped. How will our loved ones afford critical hospital treatment and life-threatening necessary medications?Obamacare violates so many sections of our Constitution with our lives now in the hands of ones who have never practiced medicine, deciding our fate. This is an assault on all of us and the sacrifices our doctors made to become the very best. How ironic that the Left refuses to allow government intervention in abortion decisions between the mother and her “doctor” but has no qualms of government
intervention with our medical care under Obamacare. In simple terms for those who still don’t get it: Make your house payment for 15 or 30 years and upon full payment the mortgage company says, “I know you fulfilled the contract but ‘we want to share the wealth’ and let someone else live in your home, so you must relinquish ownership. Live under a bridge and you’ll be fine. But, by the way, Congress has exempted itself.”Can you guess how the debt ceiling “debate” will go this fall?

items. The menu is displayed on a board above the counter, where you order sandwiches, plates, sides, desserts, and other a la carte items.
At $10.95 a plate, the sliced beef and sausage lived up to its reputation. Both could have had a stronger smoked flavor for my taste. The sides were typical fare, nothing outstanding. But hey, it’s about the meat, not the sides.
The sauce was red and thin, and tasted more like spiced up tomato sauce; lame to say the least and a little distracting. A perfect brisket should not require sauce, but for those who prefer it, it took away from the flavor of the meat.

fitting Labor Day for Max Sebrechts, a Belgian-born international model, who proposed to 2008 Miss USA Crystle Stewart.
On bended knee, Sebrechts, who’s been dating Stewart for three years, popped the ques-tion at her family's Missouri Cityhome. This he did after a
helicopter ride, a special treat with Stewart which landed them at the family’s annual Labor Day celebration.
She said, “yes.” Stewart and Sebrechts came to visit to also co-host the Miss Texas USA 2014 preliminary com-petition. Steward is a co-star in the Tyler Perry television series, "For Better or Worse."

The issue of damaged interior streets for the City of Meadows Place has been a real concern for some time now. At this month's City Council meeting, two ordinances passed unanimously to collect and hold a new tax to pay for future road repairs. This fee, assessed as part of the garbage collection, is $5 dollars per month, per resident.
Mayor Charles Jessup explained that the city does not have enough funds allocated for the excessive amount of road repairs needed. TxDOT helps with repairs to West Airport and S. Kirkwood, but it's up to them to repair their neighborhood streets. By year's end, the fund

will have accumulated 90K. Before this ordinance was
passed, the City of Meadows Place conducted a road fee survey for residents on their website to gauge public opinion. The following are some of the questions asked:

• Is City doing a good job with what money they have - 59% Yes
• Do streets impact property value - 58% Yes
• Would you like to see the City do more - 88% Yes
• How should the City fund this - 76% Flat Fee per Household
• How much should "garbage fee" be per month - 44% (the highest) said $3
Mayor Jessup thanked everyone for their support in passing this ordinance. "Three to five years from now what we did tonight is going to make a big difference."

of Houston, as one of the suspects in the case and said Aaron Nathaniel Reyes, 19, had been arrested for his participation in the home invasion on October 30.
During Reyes’ trial the victim testified that she opened the door to Reyes and his crew because she was expecting her son. While there was discussion at the door about not ordering a pizza, the four intruders forced their way into the home.
Testimony also revealed that Reyes had repeatedly kicked and pistol-whipped her in the head going so far as to knock out a tooth and cause serious injuries and extreme bruising.
According to the victim, she, her husband, and daughter were forced to the floor at gunpoint under threats of death
and sexual assault. All three family members were bound and blindfolded with duct tape. Testimony also revealed that the intruders were in the home for as long as thirty minutes before fleeing with the stolen goods.
A tip to Crime Stoppers led to the arrest of Reyes and another co-defendant, 19 year-old Tyler Quinn.
“The level of violence here was shocking to even the most seasoned of officers and prosecutors,” said Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Pfeiffer. He and Zahra Jivani Fenelon prosecuted the case. Richmond attorney Larry McDougal represented Reyes in the 268th Distort Court of Judge Brady Elliott. While Reyes was tried before a jury, he chose to have Judge Elliott assess his sentence. With a conviction of Aggravated Robbery where a deadly weapon was used, Reyes has to serve at least one-half of his 25 year sentence before he is eligible for parole.
Tyler Quinn is set for trial for this same offense on October 21, 2013.

recreation centers and areas of interest within Sugar Land's city limits. There are also longer range plans that include connecting Sugar Land's ETJ to the trail system.
"At the end of the day, it creates a great network that connects all parts of the city so you can literally go from one side of the city to the other on a bicycle," said Jim Carillo, Vice President of Halff Associates, a consulting firm hired by the city to assist with the master plan.
The 10-year plan calls for the city to construct or convert an additional 65 miles of bicycle side paths (wider than said that the elected officials’
salaries could be scaled down a little bit. Essentially, he was asking for some of the funds intended to be used for the proposed raises to also go towards employee raises, “those people that work for the people of Fort Bend County as you do.” He referred to them as “the janitors that clean your office, people that are doing our mowing, the people that are working for the drainage, those people are just as worthy.” He cited calculations about how a percentage of 11 to 12 percent on $100,000 is much more than 11 to 12 percent on $40,000.
County Judge Bob Hebert responded to Janke’s comments noting that the proposed increase in the judges’ salaries is dictated by state statute. The 12 percent increase in judges salaries comes from this year’s, the 83rd
are returning to SMSD. But along with attendance, the number of economically challenged students has increased as well. In 2008/09 only 54.85% were in this category; now that number is at 68.23%.
Included in the budget is an across-the-board pay raise of 3% for teachers and staff. Seventeen million dollars, the largest portion of funds, is spent on payroll. SMSD Board of Trustees and Dr. Hindt fully believe in the importance of attracting and retaining talented teachers. At and around the schools, 240

Trains do not blow their whistles when traveling through town, but flashing lights and ringing bells sound off when the train approaches and the crossing arms go down. All of which were working correctly that night. Lieutenant Clayton said, "There is no indication to believe he (Mr. Guerrero) was intoxicated." As required by State law, an autopsy and toxicology reports have been ordered.
No crew or passengers on the Sunset Limited were injured during the accident. The train was delayed over three hours to allow Stafford police to investigate. During this time, Missouri City Police responded to the call to assist and control traffic in the area. At the corner of Cash Road and Murphy Road, an officer sitting in his patrol car with lights flashing, was struck in the rear, driver's side, by a young man driving home from work. The Missouri City police officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and treated and released that evening.
Anyway, the crook approached the counter where the clerk had barricaded himself inside the booth surrounding the register. Can’t you just see the clerk – thumbs in his ears, tongue stuck out – nanny, nanny, boo-boo you can’t get me…. Well, it didn’t really happen that way but suffices to say, the crook could not get to the clerk or his money.
Rag-man, he left empty handed. However, his collection of fabric swatches made a lasting impression on the clerk.
The crook was last seen walking through a nearby apartment complex, his rag disguise flapping in the night breeze.
normal sidewalks), 63 miles of hike-and-bike trails, 13 miles of dedicated bike lanes, eight miles of bike lanes separated from traffic by a buffer, and 18 miles of shared-lane markings.
Much of the city's current 65 miles of bicycle trails consists of shared-use trails constructed on the property of Municipal Utility Districts and Homeowner Associations. According to the task force, Sugar Land has just three miles of bike lanes as of 2013.
Challenges exist in figuring out ways to safely get pedestrians and bicycles across major barriers like railroad crossings, state highways and the Brazos River. The city is working with the Texas Department of Transportation to figure out a way to use the existing bridge along Highway 59 to get bikes and people across the Brazos.
"We're looking to use the space underneath the bridge itself that would be completely
separate from the traffic and provide a nice way to cross the river," said Carillo.
Part of the estimated $36 million dollar price tag would be offset by federal grants. Other segments would be paid for by developers in new subdivisions. The November bond election, which calls for $10 million to be spent on a series of bike trails in the city and directly ties into the master plan, would also provide a funding boost.
Legislature’s, appropriation of over $17 million per fiscal year for judicial raises. The funds reportedly cover raises and increases in retirement benefits for Texas Supreme Court justices, Court of Criminal Appeals judges, district judges, county court-at-law judges. For example, that is what led Fort Bend County to authorize the increase in district judges’ state paid salary from $125,000 to $140,000. The county further allowed for a supplement it pays which may be increased to $18,000 a year, when its budget is adopted this month.
As for other county elected officials, Judge Hebert said that like the judges, they did not get a pay raise for the last seven years and he also cited calculations stating that the proposed raise over the last seven years was an annual increase of around 1.5 percent.
In the end, it looks like
Fort Bend County elected officials may receive close to a 9.5 percent increase in salary with county commissioners’ pay going to $112,000 from $102,350 plus a $2,400 supplement, the county judge’s salary will increase to $117,600 from $107,470 plus other supplements amounting to almost $10,000, district judges and county court at law judges may receive an over 11 percent bump.
Starting next month, Fort Bend County will be operating under a new budget, the one for fiscal year 2014. But first, the proposed budget will need to be adopted by way of public hearings set for next week, September 9 and 10, when public comments are solicited in accordance with a published legal notice.
For a review of Fort Bend County’s posted 2014 fiscal year budget, see this story online, fortbendstar.com.
cameras inside and out, are there to assist school police officers keeping the students safe. GPS devices will be put on buses, and eventually, the District would like to scan student ID’s at bus stops to document when/where the students get on/off. The new test scores have come out, and Stafford met all the required standards; the highest possible outcome. The elementary school earned 3 distinction awards and the high school has a 90% completion rate. There are challenges ahead, including a deficit of 778K. Also on the radar, improving math and science scores, helping students earn higher
level credits for college, and exceeding with the new accountability system.
In record time (2 hours) a unanimous vote (12/0) was passed by both Boards, approving the school tax rates. The M&O rate is $1.04005 and the I&S rate is $.20995 – for a total of $1.25 – the same as last year.
Mayor Scarcella thanked the SMSD Board for their hard work and for Dr. Hindt’s leadership “that brought us to a unanimous vote.” Dr. Hindt concluded the meeting with, “This team is very much like a family. Everything is in the best interest of the kids, staff, and community.
half of that is wasted from over irrigating landscapes and poorly maintained irrigation systems.
It is expected that Sugar Land’s surface water treatment plant, now in its second year of construction, will draw water from Oyster Creek and will become another component of the city’s water master plan. The surface water treatment
plant is being built to meet the Fort Bend Subsidence District’s mandated 30% reduction of groundwater use originally intended to be accomplished by 2013, but the date has been extended. The county and state mandates require substituting surface water for groundwater sources, which are currently used as primary drinking water.

It can start as a dull ache — barely noticeable — but by the end of the day you’re clutching your forehead in pain. “Most of the time, headaches are a nuisance and nothing to worry about,” says Rajesh Bindal, M.D., neurosurgeon and medical director of the neuroscience program at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “However, if headaches disrupt your life on a regular basis, they should be discussed with a physician.”
Headaches can come and go with no warning and no clear cause. Other times, they can be a symptom of another disease or condition. Knowing the symptoms of different types of headaches can help you get the appropriate treatment.
• Tension headache. Your headache might be due to tension if the pain is dull and achy. Tension headaches are also usually
accompanied by a sore neck and can often be treated with over-the-counter pain medications.
• Migraine. A migraine is characterized by throbbing, severe pain that lasts from four to 72 hours. The pain can also be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. If you feel the symptoms of a migraine coming on, rest in a quiet, dark room. A hot or cold compress on the forehead can help, as can trying to sleep. If home remedies don’t work, talk to your physician about other non-drug therapies or prescription medications.
• Chronic headache. If you experience headaches more than 14 days of a month, you might have chronic headaches. They can feel moderate to severe, and they may be a sign of an underlying condition.
• Rebound headache.

the opening of our new Headache Center. All physicians affiliated with the Headache Center are board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Through years of specialty education and training, our headache experts have the experience required to accurately diagnose and treat headaches and are committed to developing a personalized treatment plan for each patient.
The Headache Center offers expedited appointments for physician evaluation. Patients may self-refer or be referred by their physician. Headaches don’t have to ruin your day or quality of life.
Call or email the Headache Center at 281-276-8999 or [email protected] to schedule your appointment with a specialized physician who will help identify treatment options for you.
Unfortunately, sometimes what helps headaches can make them worse. If you take pain medication for headaches often, and the headache returns, you might be experiencing a rebound headache. The only way to stop the cycle of rebound headaches is to discontinue the use of that particular medication.
• Cluster headache. A cluster headache is a rare condition that affects less than 1% of adults. It is characterized by a sharp, severe pain that is often only on one side of the head. It is very painful, but lasts a short time — about 45 to 90 minutes.

Veritas Steak and Seafood is offering a unique promotion throughout the month of October to benefit cancer patients at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.
The restaurant has created special Pretty in Pink menus for both lunch and dinner for the month of October, with a portion of proceeds from every order benefiting the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Cancer Fund.
Veritas will donate $3 for every lunch and $7 for
every dinner sold from its special menus as part of the Pretty in Pink-Town Square fundraiser, which is scheduled for Friday, October 11.
“This is an excellent opportunity to have a great meal at Veritas and at the same time, benefit local cancer patients in need,” says Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital CEO Chris Siebenaler. “The money raised by this month-long promotion will go directly to the Cancer Fund, which provides financial assistance to patients to continue
their fight against cancer.” “We are honored to be a
part of this great community initiative. Together we support the cancer patients in our community while enjoying a delicious meal,” said Kevin Rios, Proprietor of Veritas.
Pretty in Pink-Town Square raised more than $110,000 for the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Cancer Fund last year. The money is donated to local cancer patients to help with non-hospital costs such as medical equipment,

Please attend an intimate Tea Party at the historic Dew House/DeWalt Heritage Center in Missouri City, on September 14, from 2pm until 4pm., in Kitty Hollow Park near Sienna Plantation.
The house has been preserved to reflect the history and way of life--not only of the Dew family--but the families who lived in the area during a period of significant development in Texas.
The Docents of Dew House have chosen to present this event to reflect the 1920s. It was a time of great change in our country and the glory days of Dew House. While the Jazz
age roared in the big cities, Victorian traditions were still celebrated in many homes across the country.
While enjoying a tour of the Dew House, guests will learn about innovations in food, dress and culture of the 1920s. All guests are invited to wear their favorite hat or select from one of ours.
Following the tour, a formal tea will be served in the lovely dining room. Our menu includes traditional finger sandwiches, fruit, an assortment of sweet treats, lemonade? and, of course, tea.
The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children. ( All children

Rising into prominence Danny Nguyen on international
business opportunities Danny meets with Press and Audience.
THE FORT BEND
STHRSPOTTER
By Elsa Maxey
Some consider Danny Nguyen a newcomer, but he’s been around the block and what a motivational speaker he’s become. He also happens to live in Missouri city, where he serves as a city councilmember. These days he’s been featured on what seems to be the makings of being on
a speaker’s circuit before corporate bodies and others.
Just last week, Nguyen was at the International Trade Center on Bellaire near us locally, presenting a powerful message with personal insights that had the attention of a business community making the realization that economic development vis a vis business opportunities have changed…for the better. Accept the global reality and benefit from it. That’s basically his message packed with personal experiences that inspire personal direction aimed at successful enterprises.
Most recently, Nguyen was in Panama with business
leaders encouraging good will and economic business opportunities for the local area, not in his capacity as a politician, but because of his business savvy. He’s also led delegations on trade missions to Indonesia and Vietnam.
“No one should be homeless in America,” he told his audience at the International Trade Center the other day.
Many believe he’s right. This commercial real estate company owner has a formula of his own and his successes are further helping shine the spotlight on Fort Bend County. Admirers continue to follow his developing story in search of the American dream he’s living. A dream he shared with Oliver North, when he was here.
