Below, speaking of ornaments, we’ve made some special linen packages using all hand-dyed linen of a size that is more than adequate for stitching the ornaments you have on your to-do list at this time of year. Each linen package is $10 (with no further discount available, as these are already discounted packages. When ordering, just tell us your choice of count: 32c, 36c, or 40c.

Right, “Hopeful” also features some poignant verses, and I’ve wanted to stitch it ever since its publication in 2005. I’m glad I waited. Today I have lots of choices to stitch it in overdyed silk. Many solid stitched areas in this design, and I’d be bored silly without the shading provided by using a variety of overdyed silks. The hills and valleys of Hopeful will be such fun to shade. Can’t wait to show you more in our next edition. As our Co-Sampler of the Month, save 15% by purchasing 2 of the 3 parts during October:

• chart $9• Lakeside Linen (double-dyed 40c cut w/2” margins

is $16)

• Silk: overdyed silk combination of Belle Soie, Dinky Dyes, Gumnut, & Gloriana’s Luminescence $95.50 ~ or all NPI $64

Below, 2 Charland “parts” that you will need for Charland’s ornament in this year’s 2011 JCS Ornament issue - I’ll show you the ornament next time when I get more issues in stock ~ hornbook $14; tiny Sterling Silver holly charm, $10

B e l o w , W i t c h Scissor Char m, insp ired by an antique scissors commemorating the Salem witches of 1692. Scissors actually open! $40 for SS charm.

October is here! ~ and that means it’s time for “Margaret Cottam,” a new Sampler Club from La-D-Da

If you’ve been waiting for an order

for Weeks hand-dyed linen, your wait may almost be over. We’ve learned that the August

closure of the Belgian linen mill created a

hiatus in the availability of the base linen used by Weeks, but the mill is back in production

now for a month and your wait should soon be over.

We’re modifying our shipping policy to better serve you.

Our goal has always been to minimize your shipping costs as much as possible, but sometimes to a fault. That continues to be our goal, but waiting for all items to come in to complete an order will be modified, at our discretion, unless you very specifically instruct us otherwise. Unexpected problems that we have no control over sometimes cause indeterminate delays, and from now on we will be shipping partial orders more frequently so that you may enjoy your new project, book, or “necessaries” more often.

Margaret stitched her sampler at the age of 9 in 1807, and now, more than 200 years later, thanks to Lori Markovic of La-D-Da, thousands of young ladies worldwide will be stitching this charming sampler together! But we will have so many advantages that weren’t available to Margaret: hand-dyed linens, hand-dyed threads, both silks and cottons, and lights and magnification to help us re-create Margaret’s sampler.

The photo at the left shows the complimentary pincushion design

included for each Club member. Notice the whimsical design, which includes the symbols used in the sampler charting! The colors remind me of Autumn, my favorite Season of the year! The 3 patterns, each $8, will be available in mid-month beginning with October. Sampler design size is 170w x 200h; the model is stitched on Weeks’ 30c Cocoa with 8 colors of Weeks floss (10 skeins needed). Of course we will be doing a conversion to silk overdyes as soon as we learn the color palette. We will also be offering linen choices in Weeks 35/40c and Lakeside’s 32/36/40c. We are offering 3 linen cuts: 30/32c - 17.5 x 19.5; 35/36c - 15.5 x 17.5; 40c - 13.5 x 16. Our order has been placed based on the reservations we’ve received. Please understand that there may be a slight delay for materials for orders still to come.

Coming from The Essamplaire

Above, “Elizabeth Sheffield 1784,” reproduced by The Scarlet Letter from the American Folk Art Museum in New York City, our March Sampler of the Month.Below, Andrea’s beautiful model, currently on display in the shop.

Far Right, “Martha Edlin - 1668” ($355 for 55c and 35c - $368 for 45c and 40c) is a stunning band sampler that is a small part of the needlework that Martha stitched, as a mere child! She was 11 when she stitched a fabulous casket, which can be seen here:http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/videos/m/video-martha-edlins-casket/ In the video you can see her sampler rolled up inside the casket. The sampler uses double running, satin, marking cross, long armed cross, montenegrin, running stitch, eyelets and detached buttonhole. Her sampler reproduction is mainly worked with Soie d'Paris, a glorious filament silk with a remarkable sheen. It’s only 8.25 - 12 inches wide, depending on the linen count. That’s very doable! Stitching it over 2 instead of 3 will require an adjustment in the Algerian eye alphabet at the bottom, and some of the running stitches. Available as a special order for your personal choice of linen count.

Above, “Anne Anthony - 1786” ($153 w/silk on 35c), a sampler in the collection at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, is part of a group of samplers stitched in Newport, Rhode Island (see “Elizabeth Sheffield” on the left). Anne’s sampler, stitched when she was 10, displays characteristics found on Newport samplers, horizontal bands containing pictorial motifs and inscriptions, with wide floral borders along the sides and top and a vase or cartouche at the bottom with the maker’s name, birth date, and sampler date. The top borders contain at least one bird, and frequently the second band contains naturalistic strawberries. Some of the other bands contain elegantly dressed people. This is yet another must stitch!

Above: “Margaret Taylor” ($153 40c w/silk), a Scottish sampler stitched mainly in cross stitch with some over one, double running, satin, chain, queen, and tent ~ AND uses couched-down chenille for the lawn and some of the flowers ~ some spangles are used as well. Right, “Elisabeth Oberholtzerin-1817” ($150 35c w/silk) is a Pennsylvania sampler stitched by Elisabeth in needlework school and features nine Quaker motifs as well as a number of Germanic motifs.

Here Now from The Essamplaire

Left, “For a Friend-1837” ($32 35c w/silk) is a charming example of the miniature samplers that were stitched and given as a token of friendship and is worked entirely in cross stitch. Right, “Mary Hay-1813” is a small Scottish sampler that features the Coat of Arms of the Fleshers, craftsmen that we know as butchers, surrounded by numerous family initials and crowns, rabbits, dogs, and peacocks, all typical to Scottish samplers. Mary used cross stitch, cross over one, double running, tent, and some freehand satin stitches to create her sampler.
