♣ UNIT NEWS ♣ UNIT NEWS ♣ UNIT NEWS ♣ UNIT NEWS ♣The Tallahassee DBC would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to making our May tournament such a great success – we were over 200 tables for the weekend for significant growth from last year. Please make sure you join us again August 27-29 for the next one!
Congratulations to two new GOLD LIFE MASTERS from the Pensacola Bridge Club, Ray and Carla Hickey. These two great bridge players celebrated their achievement during a party provided by their fellow bridge players. We all had a great evening with all the fixings that we do at special events. After the cake cutting and socializing, a great game of bridge was enjoyed by all.
Tallahassee is sad to report the loss of Kate Blough. Kate was a wonderful member of our bridge community and will be missed.
The Tallahassee Duplicate Bridge Club held its Spring Pro-Am Game on May 6 to another great success – 14.5 tables showed up for food and fun! Each novice was paired for the night with a Pro and everyone played SAYC. Prizes included books for the novices and free plays for the pros. Our winners were Stuart Smith and Cecilia Linder with a 69% game!
There are parties and then there are “REAL PARTIES!” Welcome to the Kentucky Derby celebrations at the Pensacola Bridge Club. Karen and Ted Gardner were our host/hostess and what a great time was had by all. Karen cooked Burgoo (the traditional Kentucky Derby stew-chicken and beef base with vegetables), Derby Pie with whipped cream and of course, you can’t have a Derby party without bourbon...
The ladies wore hats as well as two of our guys. We had six tables in play and most placed bets on the horses running for the roses. As it turned out, we had five (5) winners so the roses had to be shared and the pot split. Extra points were awarded because this was a Youth Charity Game. There were so many winners this day. If you live near enough to Pensacola, put this one on next years’ calendar. You will not want to miss it!

MEET OUR NEW GOODWILL COMMITTEE MEMBERSJane Davis Jane’s volunteer services are endless. One of her outstanding achievements, after three hurricanes, was overseeing the restructuring of The Vero Beach Bridge Center’s building. She was not satisfied with the architect’s results so she redesigned the beautiful kitchen and bathrooms. Jane has been a greeter and has co-chaired several tournaments. She also cashiers, decorates the Club’s Christmas tree, makes the centerpieces, provides food and helps with kitchen duty. Jane, you are an ideal role model; thanks for all you do. Jamie Portell Jamie has served as a board member, on the education committee since its inception in 1999, director of student games, popular teacher and mentor. She has also chaired the mentoring program and the Vero Beach Bridge Club’s 10th anniversary celebration. On behalf of all the students you have taught and every member of the Vero Club, thank you for your support, encouragement and patience. Jamie, you are an ideal role model; thanks for all you do.
BRIDGE STUDIO OF MELBOURNE GIVES TO CHARITIES The Bridge Studio of Melbourne, located at 4300 Kimberly Circle has been busy with charity games. The April charity games produced more than $400. We Want To Hear From You!“Points-shmoints” At A Club Game In Unit 240 Submitted by Elliot Raphaelson of Orlando
Following are hands my wife, Carolyn and I played at the Orlando Bridge Club on March 22. We were fortunate to win, and the following hand was one reason. It’s a good example of “points -shmoints.”
Carolyn opened one diamond as North. I bid 2 clubs and she responded two hearts. I bid 4NT hoping she had three or four controls. She bid 5 diamonds showing three controls, and I bid 6 hearts. As you can see it is a high percentage slam, and she had no problem making 6. No one else in the field bid 6. I could have bid 3 spades over 2 hearts showing a singleton or spade void, but she would have signed off in 4 hearts not knowing about my six card club suit. In this situation I thought I should be in control of the auction because of my club suit. The hands follow:
♠ A62 VUL: EW♥ KT43 Opening Lead: 2♥♦ AT98♣ 42
♠ KQ753 ♠ JT84♥ J6 ♥852♦ 7432 ♦ KJ5♣ 53 ♣AJ6
♠ 9♥ AQ97♦ Q6♣KQT987
After pulling trumps in three rounds, she played a club from her hand and once East played the Ace, she could claim. No defense beats the hand.
