Dear Padre, My prayer-group leader is encouraging us to write our own prayers for our meetings. I don’t think we’re qualified to write prayers for other people to pray. Don’t you need some formal religious training? Will our prayers count? It’s given to every human being to be able to pray. On the level of the spiritual life, prayer is as basic as breathing is to physical life. Everyone at every moment has the grace to say a prayer. Sometimes I ask people, “Do you pray?” At times they tell me they don’t. Then I ask them, “Well, do you talk with God?” Of course they do, at least sometimes. That’s praying. When writing your prayers, I suggest you use this ancient definition as inspiration: Prayer is the raising of the mind and heart to God. I’m sure your prayers will be that in word and feeling, and they will “count.” When writing more formal prayers, it’s nice to include the prayer elements the Church considers important: adoration of God, contrition and sorrow for sin, thanksgiving for life and for God’s care of us in good times and bad, and petition for what we desperately need in our poverty. And for you, a final word. Remember that, no matter how bad things may get, no matter how out of control, you always have the gift and power of saying a prayer. Especially in time of temptation—when things really go bad—ask Mary your Mother to pray with you. FR. JOHN HAMROGUE, CSsR [email protected]

CHRISTMAS BOUTIQUE AND CRAFT SHOW…is rapidly approaching, November 7th & 8th. As always we are in need of new and homemade craft items! This parish fund raiser

is only successful through the kind generosity of so many that give of their time and talents! Please consider sharing your talents by making unique items for our show!

JUSTICE CHALLENGE:...On September 27th we honor the life of St. Vincent de Paul. He founded missionary communities of men and women, both dedicated to the needs of the poor and vulnerable. Today the Vincentians continue his legacy, as do the thousands of lay people who belong to their local St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Your challenge this week is to research your parish chapter of St. Vincent de Paul, or the nearest local store or center. Find out what you can do to help. It might be joining your parish chapter, or donating time and money to this ministry, or getting the word out to others about the great work which St. Vincent de Paul chapters accomplish. It might be going through your closets and donating quality clothing or household items to the local store.

Whatever you decide to do, remember that you are joining a network of people who keep St. Vincent’s legacy alive by following in his footsteps.

THE CHAPARRALS…will be performing on Saturday October 18th at the St. Gregory CCD Center in Bristol, located on 1043 Stafford Ave. The band which plays a variety of danceable music including music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s along with a little Country will play from 7 – 11PM. Doors will open at 6PM. This is a Bring Your Own Beverage and Snacks affair. Set-ups will be provided and a selection of sodas will be available for purchase. Singles are cordially invited. Advanced sale general admission tickets can be purchased at St. Gregory’s Rectory beginning October 6th at $10 per person. Prepaid tables of 8 – 10 persons can be reserved at $10 per person by calling Marilyn at 860.584.0187 after October 1st. Table reservation is not available at the rectory. Tickets will be sold at the door on October 18th at $12 per person.

7th ANNUAL CONNECTICUT CATHOLIC MEN’S CONFERENCE…Saturday, October 25, 2014, Goodwin College, 1 Riverside Dr., East Hartford 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A day of spiritual enrichment featuring motivational speakers: Author and Radio Host Jon Leonetti; Retreat Leader Bryan Mercier, Business Leader Peter Freissle; Brother Robert Moriarty of the Archdiocese of Hartford; and a question and answer session hosted by Archbishop Leonard Blair. Music, Mass, and Reconciliation are also part of the day. Cost is $35 p/person. Register at: www.ctcatholicmen.org or call 860-484-7950. ALTAR SERVER IN A DIFFERENT VESTURE…in an effort to distinguish our older servers from the younger ones, and to encourage them to serve as they grow older, we vest the high school students in the traditional black cassock and white surplice at Mass. The servers in eighth grade and below will continue to wear the white monastic alb. It is our hope that this recognition will express our appreciation for their dedication and commitment to this ministry. EXPOSITION OF THE

BLESSED SACRAMENT…The Life-long Faith Committee would like to inform you of the area parishes that offer Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on a regular schedule. A complete list of the parishes in the Archdiocese of Hartford offering Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament can be found on their website, www.archdioeseofhartford.org., Saint Anne, Bristol Friday, 8:30am – 6:45pm, Saint Gregory, Bristol – First Friday of the month 9:30am – Noon, and St. Thomas, Southington, Thursday, 8:00 – 11:00am. A GREAT BIG THANK YOU… to all who made our Parish Picnic a fun place to be – the food & company was more than we could have asked for. Thank you, thank you, thank you. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!
