ABOUT DARK RADIANCE

The purpose of Dark Radiance is to highlight interesting and innovative projects by photographers working primarily in black and white. In our media-saturated culture, it can be a challenge to get viewers to slow down and really look at images. Our aim is to provide a vehicle for artists to present new work, and get it in front of an audience that is eager to explore new ways of understanding the relevance of photography.

Please subscribe using the contact form on the website. And don’t forget to include some comments about the work, if you are so moved. Feedback of all kinds is important to people who create art for its own sake.

"BREAK THE RULES - AND BE BRILLIANT AT IT."

THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE

Letter from the Editor

Can we please stop saying ‘smartphone photography’?

I recently came across an article titled “Sublime smartphone snaps of the 2019 iPhone Photography Awards.” The images are incredible art and deserve your full attention, when you get finished absorbing Dark Radiance. But this headline was so offensive to me that I had to tear off a blistering editorial.

Folks, these images are not “snaps”. They are gorgeously crafted art. I’m sure the words in this headline were chosen for their alliterative qualities, but the editor would never have used the word “snap” or “snapshot” to refer to an award-winning photo taken on, say, a Hasselblad or a Rolleiflex or a Nikon. The make of camera would not have been noted at all.

In fact, having a competition specifically for iPhone photos is irritating. Images are created by artists, not cameras. Unless a manufacturer is specifically promoting their own cameras, there is no reason to limit what equipment was used for a competition. It is demeaning to the artist, because it implies that iPhone images can’t compete in the same arena as those taken with dedicated cameras.

Besides, it doesn’t even make sense. In the (relatively) distant past, mobile phones had marginal cameras, and getting a good capture might have been noteworthy. But that ain’t true any more. Many professionals use their phones. They capture, edit, and upload from the phone. They don’t bother to indicate their technical choice, because there is no reason to care. Unless the artist is making a point about something such as how the camera responded to available light, or depth of field, or how they were able get the shot at all, we don’t (or shouldn’t) care that the camera happened to be part of a smartphone.

Photographs are created using a combination of gear, processing, and most of all, the skill and imagination of the creator. Let’s stop qualifying the value of photographic art that comes off a phone.

THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE

The September Issue

This being September, we are doing a style issue. If you’ve ever been a bookstore or magazine stand in September, you have seen the stacks of fashion magazines, some weighing several pounds each. And if you’ve ever opened one of those issues, you know that 90% of it is advertising. So imagine your relief, looking at Dark Radiance. Not only will you not see advertising here, you will see trend-defying images and individuals.

This month, I am honored and pleased to present the work of Rimas Zailskas. For his series, I asked him to produce images that are “anti-fashion”. Not just in his chosen subjects, but also stylistically. Rimas’s work is unique and instantly recognizable; these edgy images are exactly what Dark Radiance is all about: getting viewers to look more closely at photography, especially when it goes beyond the typical.

THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE

“Endless Night”

Shirley asked me to contribute to the anti-fashion edition of Dark Radiance. The images in this issue are from an exhibit from several years ago called Endless Night as well as one from Verve magazine (the only legitimate fashion portrait). I hope they are suitably unfashionable.

THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE

“Shining Through”

There are people who try to cover up who they are, they labor under the impression that dressing in a certain way will make them more socially acceptable, or impress others. But no matter how a person dresses, who they truly are will shine through.

And then there are some people who don't attempt to disguise who they are. They wear their identity proudly, unapologetically, and are beautiful because of it. I celebrate the style of these individuals in this series.

Photography allows me to capture the richness of what I see around me, and to encourage a closer vision of it. It is my way of showing the world to myself in new ways. With my images, I explore ways of depicting something essential about a scene, and challenge the viewer to think about what they are seeing.

Adding elements of mixed media allows me to create unusual visual landscapes, reflecting what I see right under the surface, and bringing out elements of mystery. I like to explore the boundaries between what is real and what is in my imagination. My work often includes elements of the mystical and the fantastic, combined with what is so commonplace that we have stopped looking at it closely. Often the story I want to tell is one of texture, of the impact of time on the subject. The patina of wear can be beautiful as well as thought-provoking.

I mostly shoot with wide angle lenses that get me close to my subject. I frequently capture images with my iPhone, because it is always with me. Any moment can provide an opportunity for me to explore what is around me.
