    I Need More. . .Knowledge

    September 2019

The Church of Scientology teaches that people are

basically good, that their capabilities are unlim-

ited, and those capabilities can be realized. People

can also achieve new, higher states of awareness

and ability. Scientology claims that the secrets to

this higher knowledge can only be found in their

church through a process they call “auditing.”

Seems strange? But honestly, a cultic religion that

encourages you to look within yourself for more

    knowledge can really satisfy

an itch. Who doesn’t feel they

    need more knowledge? And

how about being able to pat

yourself on the back for pur-

    suing it and supposedly find-

    ing that knowledge within

    yourself? That’s pretty appeal-

    ing to the human heart.

    But God’s Word sounds much

    different than L. Ron Hub-

bard, who authored the book that has become Sci-

entology’s bible. God says people are not basically

good, that people’s natural capabilities are limited

to sinning and rebelling against God. As a result,

God says all people are the same: “There is no one

who understands, no one who seeks God…The

way of peace they do not know” (Romans 3:11,17).

God is right! Not L. Ron Hubbard! Need proof?

Think about Adam and Eve when they pursued

more knowledge on their own apart from God.

They rejected God’s Word and sinned. Look at

what their own inner pursuit of knowledge got

them and us! A world infected by sin so badly that

    everyone eventually dies.

Jesus knows we all lack knowledge, and he wants

to fill that void. He does so not by telling us to

find it inside ourselves, but by telling us to look

outside ourselves. We find knowledge in the Bible.

Through his Word, God makes us wise; he gives

    us insight and understanding.

    (See Psalm 119:98-100.) That’s

    because God’s Word gives us

    knowledge that we can’t find

    or discover anywhere else.

The Bible tells about Jesus. It

tells how wide, long, high, and

deep Jesus’ love is for people.

That love drove Jesus to come

to this world, bear the sin of

every person, die on a cross,

and suffer the eternal punishment for all sins.

That’s love—love so amazing that God declares

that your sins are forgiven because of Jesus.

That’s love—love so beyond understanding that

Jesus, the righteous one, should die for the un-

righteous. But he did! That’s why the apostle Paul

    says that “this love surpasses

knowledge” (Ephesians 3:19). In Jesus’ love for

you, you have everything you truly need to know,

    both now and forever.

Saying Hello to a Brand-New School Year!

Saying “good-bye” to summer is easy when there is so much adven-ture awaiting us! It is exciting to see our ‘old’ friends and to welcome new friends into our school family. To that end, we warmly welcome Amelia Shirshac (gr.2) and Katlyn Savage (gr. 4), along with 10 new 3k students!

There will also be two additions to our school staff, as well. We also welcome Karen McGarry and Terri Dobratz, who will be splitting the 3k aid position. Many of you know Karen’s smiling face from multiple church and school events. Terri and her husband moved to the town of Rome about three years ago and became mem-bers at St. Paul’s.

This will be the start of the 14th year of our elementary school and the 3rd year of our 3K class. How reassuring to know that God is in full control and has blessed our school ministry, as changes and adaptations are continually made for each new group of young souls. Please keep your school, its teachers, and staff in your prayers as we continue to serve the families God has entrusted to us!

A Peek into Pre-school! by Amanda Irwin

This will be the third year of Good Shepherd’s 3K ministry. I’m hoping that many of you have had the opportunity to peek in the classroom and see some of the fun things we do each day. You may have noticed that the room is divided into 6 different learning centers each with its own individual purpose. Each month new items are rotated into the classroom. Which items are added is

completely dependent on the develop-mental level of the children. This is where it can get tricky. If you introduce items that are too easy the kids get bored and if you introduce items too soon the kids get frustrated. Every month I will focus on one of the learning cen-ters; what items are found there, and what kids are learning through play in that center. While the concept of early childhood education is growing at a rapid pace, here at Good Shepherd we’re relatively new to this specialized ministry. It’s is my hope that I’m

able to give you some insight into the world early childhood and show you that there is a method to our madness!

  • WELS Hymnal Project

An Update from the Project Director, Pastor Michael Schultz

The WELS Hymnal Project includes print books numbering a total of approximately seventeen

volumes slated to be released simultaneously with the new hymnal, ready to be used for Advent

    2021.

Scripture Committee: The update of the three-year lectionary is complete. A key strength

of this updated resource is that all Sundays and festivals will have a unified theme across all

    three readings.

Hymnody Committee: A first draft of the final hymn list of 650 hymns is being reviewed.

2/3 of the hymns of the previous hymnal are brought forward in the new hymnal, while approx-

imately 1/3 of the hymns are new. New hymns are not all recent; a good number of the “new

hymns” are simply “new to us.” The Accompaniment Edition for the hymns is slated to be a two

    -volume set totaling 1500 pages.

Psalmody Committee: The new hymnal will include 62 psalms. A separate, self-standing

psalter will include the full texts of all 150 psalms, with an average of two or three different mu-

sical settings of each psalm. The Accompaniment Edition for the psalter is slated to be a two-

    volume set totaling 1000 pages.

Rites Committee: is in the process of finalizing the text and music of all of the services in

the front part of the hymnal. The keyboard Accompaniment Edition for liturgy, psalms and

Gospel Acclamations is slated to be a volume of at least 300 pages.

Technology Committee: The highest priority initiative of the TC has been a service builder

program. The service builder program is “software as a service.” Users operate the software in a

web browser rather than installing software on their own hard drives. Undoubtedly, the two

greatest strengths of this program will be time savings in producing service folders and the high

-level quality of the service folders that the program exports. A Musicians’ Resource will make

available thousands of individual music files in support of congregational singing. Also, availa-

ble is a personal app for individual users to access the hymnal materials on a devotional basis.

Preview: A 60-page booklet is being produced to introduce the new hymnal line of products

to the members of our church body. Each congregation will receive multiple hard copies of this

Preview. The Preview will first be released at the January 2020 WELS Leadership Conference.

The Hymnal Introduction Program will also formally begin its work at the same time.

Next Steps: The Preview will also begin to share with congregations plans they can make to

fund purchases of new hymnal materials. Look forward to seeing in the Forward in Christ

magazine a three-article series on the new hymnal, starting in October 2019.

  • Happy fall. I love this time of year. At least I love low humidity, sunny days, cool nights, and

beautiful leaves on the trees. The month of September has been declared Pain Awareness

Month. It has been recognized as such since 2001.

When part of you hurts all the time, all of you hurts: “My back is filled with searing pain; there is no

health in my body. I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart. All my longings lie

    open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you. My heart pounds, my strength fails me;

even the light has gone from my eyes” (Psalm 38:7-10).

I guess I could write a book on the topic of pain instead of a one page letter. There is so much

information on this topic. I decided to limit my focus on food and pain. I found this information on

the Marshfield Clinic website. They recommended eating certain foods to have less joint pain.

AVOID SATURATED FATS AND FRIED FOODS

Foods high in saturated and trans fats contain compounds called advanced glycation end prod-

ucts (AGEs) that increase inflammation. Inflammation aggravates joint pain. High-fat animal

products have the largest amounts of the AGEs. This includes foods such as bacon, deep-fried

foods, cream sauces and butter. These foods can be high in sodium as well which can also con-

tribute to joint pain. This means limiting high-fat and high-sodium foods is useful.

    EAT FOODS HIGH IN ANTIOXIDANTS

Eating foods high in antioxidants can relieve joint pain by preventing cell damage to cartilage.

Damaged cartilage causes joint pain and functional issues. Foods high in antioxidants include

deep-colored fruits and vegetables like berries, cherries, sweet potatoes, broccoli and dark leafy

green vegetables. Aim to eat 2-4 servings of fruit per day and 3-5 servings of vegetables.

    EAT MORE PLANT-BASED PROTEIN

Eating a few meatless meals a week will help you avoid AGEs found in meat. Red kidney beans

and black beans are good protein sources, plus they have antioxidants that help prevent joint

pain. A serving is ½ cup cooked beans.

Nuts are another good protein source that have anti-inflammatory monounsaturated fats. Nuts

are high in calories, so you don’t need very many. Just 12 almonds or 7 walnut halves is a serving

of healthy fat, or ¼ cup counts as a serving of protein.

    EAT FATTY FISH

Fish contains fewer AGEs than other animal products, so it’s a good choice in place of meat.

Opt for 3 ounces of salmon, tuna, mackerel or lake trout twice a week to add inflammation-

fighting omega-3 fatty acids to your diet. If you don’t care for fish, taking fish oil supplements will

provide omega-3s that can reduce arthritis symptoms.

Following these diet recommendations alone will not make all of your pain disappear, but includ-

ing it in your pain control plan can make a difference. Controlling inflammation in your body is

important in preventing many health problems including heart disease. I would recommend fol-

lowing this diet even if you are not in pain.

  • In Luke 15:11-32, Jesus told the parable of a

wealthy farmer who had two boys. The younger of the two

sons was not thankful. He dishonored his dad. He left

home with his share of the estate given to him by his still

living father. While he was gone, this lost boy

“squandered his wealth in wild living” (verse 13).

When this boy finally came to his senses, he con-

fessed his sin to God. He made up his mind to go home.

He said, “I have sinned against heaven and against you, I

am no longer worthy to be called your son...” (verses 18-

19). But the son’s confession was stopped short. His fa-

ther, in an overwhelming display of love, embraced his

    son, celebrated his return.

In this parable, Jesus illustrates the love of the father for the lost. God’s love is infi-

nite. God’s love toward sinners is unconditional and eternal. The love of the Father shown

in this parable is the spring of motivation for a Christian’s managing of gifts of Time, Tal-

    ents, Treasures and Testimony.

In spite of who we are and what we do, God doesn’t stop loving us. Jesus lived and

died and rose again to guarantee eternal blessings in heaven. We respond. We honor God

with the faithful use of our Testimony, Time, Talents, and Treasures. As God’s managers

we make use of God’s gifts. Let us continue to gladly and wholeheartedly serve God.

The Father works in us and blesses others as He works through us. How am I say-

ing THANKS to God for all that He has entrusted to me? When I think of Christian stew-

ardship, like you I easily think of what goes in the offering plate. And I pray that you and I

are showing deep gratitude through generous giving.

But what about using my talents for God

through the church? All of us, to one degree or another,

have the ability to do things that can be of benefit to

our church. In other words … after you have heard the

sermon and participated in Holy Communion … now

it’s time to renew my thanks by doing some work for

    the Lord.

Christians realize that sin is a big problem and

obstacle in this world. Thanks to the Word of God, you

and I have been brought to the realization that for-

  • giveness is needed every day. Scripture also tells us that salvation is a free gift that we cannot

earn. That fact alone makes us more eager

to say thanks to God. He has saved and

freed us from eternal prison. God gives us

a fresh start every day! As stewards, we re-

alize that our talents and abilities are gifts

from God that are to be used in his service.

We also use our testimony and time.

In other words, in our conversations, we

credit God and expressthanks to Him.

Blessings do not come because of luck, but

because of God’s goodness to people.

Our offerings display that God is the Provider and we are grateful for what He gives to us.

Some of the tasks that we can do around the church are fairly obvious, such as being kind and

courteous to fellow worshippers and visitors. We give words and cards and notes of encourage-

ment. We sing in the choir, usher, teach Sunday school, serve on committees or boards, wash

    windows, etc.

Check with the various leaders we have elected to see what they see is needed. There are

many ways of expressing thanks to the Lord. We hope that one of the ways that you will say

thanks is through using your talents at our church.

People live one of two ways … with or without Christ. The Lord’s apostle revealed that

many live without Christ, living just for themselves. Many lift

up worldly pleasures, parties and success. All of us are tempt-

ed to squander our talents, waste time, spend money foolishly

and put off opportunities to talk up Jesus. So the Holy Spirit urg-

es believers to live with Christ, to lift Him up as the risen Lord, to

rejoice in Him and be blessed by Him.

Thanks be to God who enables us to use God-given gifts to

His glory to benefit others. “Each of us will give an account of

himself to God,” we read in Romans 14:12. Let us be among

those who hear the words, “Well done, good and faithful serv-

ant!” (Matthew 25:21). From my family to you and yours, happy

    hearing! Alive in Jesus!

    things through Christ

    who gives me

  • Good Shepherd Financial Stewardship – July 2019

Well we are off to new fiscal year and for the month of July our expense where slightly

higher than gifts. It is just one point of 12 which makes a full fiscal year. Soon we will be

starting, probably in many ways, the new church year for many with school starting, summer

winding down and preparing for Christmas. Yes, it not that far away. What good news we have

    to share!!!!

Our God came to us to bring us to Himself. We reach about 100 people in our congrega-

tion weekly and trying to further reach even more who may not know Jesus our Savior. Please

pray that our Lord will guide you on how to serve Him by talents, praying, giving, smiling, lis-

  • WELCOME HOME SUNDAY OCTOBER 20th :

    THE BLESSING OF "HOME"

There's something about home. Home is where you relax after a long day of work. Home is where you can let your hair down. At home people love you even with your quirks and flaws. Home is where you feel most safe, in a world which is anything but.

Jesus intended for His Community of faith to be like a school where we learn about God's Word and like a cathedral where we praise our Creator. Jesus intended for Church to be a home where we gather with Christian family and enjoy all the blessings of home.

On October 20th, we are celebrating Welcome Home Sunday. (We will not gather to worship on Thursday October 17th.) We will talk about how God blesses us with the support of a Christian community. One ma-jor goal for this Sunday?

We want to have 100% of our members in attendance. Let's pack the house! Let's see what that looks like, when every member comes to-gether. Let's do everything possible to set that date aside so we can join our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Following Welcome Home Sunday, there will be another event go-ing on the next Saturday, Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 26th from 4:00-6:00pm. (When family gets together, there tends to be food!) There will be some games for the children. So, let's plan on attending this community event as well.
