SUPREME

PRESIDENT’S

MESSAGE

SUPREME

SECRETARY’S

MESSAGE

SUPREME

SPIRITUAL

DIRECTOR’S

MESSAGE

Greetings to all members of theKnights of St. John International.

The Supreme Board has come off ofa successful meeting in beautiful Buf-falo, NY, the site of the 2016 biennialInternational convention. The localconvention committee, the BuffaloGrand Commandery, has been hard atwork to make the convention a success. They have had some challenges to over-come, but they have assured both theMen and Ladies boards that all will beready for next July! There will be manymore details to come in the next fewmonths.

One of the main topics of the meet-ing dealt with the continuing processof the restructuring of the SupremeBoard, as required under the laws ofthe state of New York. While that pro-cess will be ongoing for some time, therestructuring committee has asked forinput by the membership. They needthis input by no later than 1-Dec-2015.If you have any suggestions, please sendthem through your grand commandery, this will help reduce the amount ofemail to the committee. Once the com-mittee has the necessary input, theywill be working on those ideas in orderto accomplish the restructuring.

The message I would like to focuson for this issue of the Journal is ofhumility.

All too often, in our world today, wesee people and their actions that ex-hibit their pride; the T.V. celebritiesand how they exhibit their bodies, aformer world athelete and how he/shehas “changed” genders, political figureswho want to spend other peoples moneyfor their pet projects just so they cansay that they “care” for the “little guy”.We see very little mention of the“Mother Theresa’s” of the world or ofthe “St. John Paul II’s”; people whohumbled themselves in the Lord in or-der to minister to and take real care ofthe little guy (and gal and children).

Even within our own organizationthere are some visible examples ofpride and its deleterious effects. Weneed to be good examples and exhibithumility, not just for it’s sake alone, but so that Jesus can work through usto do great deeds in His name. If webecome more humble in Christ, He willexalt us and we will be respected and

It seems that when the time comesto write this article, something appearson the scene that makes the decisionon a topic a simple choice. As you willnote, I vary from my predecessors inthat I try to refrain from nagging aboutlate monthly and year end reports, death notices, new members and all thelists and reports that should be filedtimely. I have found other means ofgetting these gripes across, and it’sbeen working pretty well.

I would like to dedicate this articleto a man that helped make the respon-sibilities of my office a “piece of cake”.I must communicate with every GrandCommandery in the world and if themessage doesn’t get out to theseGrands properly and succinctly, we haveproblems. I work very closely with allGrand Presidents, but when it comesto our African Grand Commanderies, and specifically the larger countrieslike Nigeria and Ghana, I rely heavilyon the Supreme Subordinate Secretar-ies to help me carry the burden. Tospread the message and return to mewith results. They are both a blessingfor me.

Unfortunately, the recent SupremeSubordinate elections in Ghana re-moved “my man” from office. Eitherit was a tenure issue or he just chosenot to run for re-election, but I nolonger have Brig. Gen. Marcel Videkaras my spokesperson. It has been a greatmany years and a great run.

Marcel saw what was needed to bedone and went out and did it. Whenthe Year End Reports began to stragglein, some in ink, some illegible, he tookhold of the reins and made sure thatevery commandery in Ghana not onlymade their reports promptly, they wereall retyped, membership counts weredouble- checked and accurate, and e-mailed to me timely. It was such a joyto work with him.

He reported to me quarterly, andmade sure that I was provided withnew member and deceased memberlists to coincide with Knights Journaldeadlines, so we could make those re-ports timely. These reports kept meupdated on the donation of money(cedis) and hours. He also inundatedme with requests for Commissions, butthat was also doing his job, which causes

Christ asked his disciples. They re-sponded: “John the Baptist, Elijah,or one of the prophets.”

Not comparing Pope Francis toJesus Christ, but a similar questionis being asked about Pope Francis.“Who do people say Pope Francisis?” Some call Pope Francis, thePeople’s Pope, Down to Earth Pope, the Social Justice Pope, the Popewho is turning the Church, andworld, upside down.”

The United States, and my homecity, is pleased to host the WorldMeeting of Family, but especiallyhost to Pope Francis. His presenceshould spark the conscious and at-tention of many people, includingreligious leaders, politicians, laypeople, the marginalized, and thoselooking for some kind of personalhope and change.

It is always said, we are placedin certain areas and positions at theright time for the right purpose. Many people will agree with thisstatement when it come to PopeFrancis. Truly, it was the guidanceof the Holy Spir i t when PopeFrancis was elected to the Papacy.

Pope Francis mission so far, andwhat the world “have seen andheard,” is one of hope, fresh ideasand on-going challenge to all as wejourney to the Kingdom. He contin-ues to bring a new and fresh mean-ing to the term “New Evangeliza-tion.”

As Knights and Ladies of St. JohnInternational, may we continue tore-commit our faith in the CatholicChurch and her leaders, especiallyin Pope Francis.

Who do you say Pope Francis is?

As always, let us keep each otherin prayer, and thank you for all youdo for the good of the order and theKnights of St. John International.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Monsignor Federico A. BrittoSupreme Spiritual Director

Buffalo Regiment:Colonel’s Comments:Col. Dennis Potozniak

My fellow Brother Knights, I hopeI find you doing well during thesewarm and humid days of summer. These days are precious here in NewYork. It seems we wait for so manymonths to enjoy the precious few thathave the warmth and sunshine thatwe cherish so much. This brings me athought of how often we forget to cher-ish the items of the “everyday” hap-penings in a “normal” day of our livesbecause we are distracted or side-tracked waiting or looking for some-thing more. We don’t stop to appreci-ate the simple gifts we’ve been longaccustomed to just happening auto-matically or just always being therefor us whenever we want it. For ex-ample, the simply greeting of a lovedone at the start of a day, the call froma friend, the gift of job or even theblessing of opening our eyes eachmorning and sleeping in a homewhere there is warmth, food and mostimportant love.

I think we all get in this rhythmreally. We forget what is really im-portant. We crave for more and dif-ferent but what brings us real happi-ness is constant and steady. In ourlives and in our Order, let us stop ex-amine our goals and ambitions andpray we weigh them against the needsand purpose we profess to believe in.I think by all of us taking a pause toreflect and examine ourselves we maybe better prepared to work out ourdifferences, formulate plans workingtogether knowing that we may notalways get everything we wish for ordesire but that we can find real ful-fillment and comfort in so manythings we so very take for granted andsometimes overlook. By doing this, insome periodic steps I believe we’ll en-joy our lives more, feel more satisfiedand more at peace with ourselves andone another. I think this might workout for the better for not only in ourown lives but in the life of our Orderas well. We’ll cherish the purpose ofour Order, our fellowship we share andthe activities in it and become lessconsumed of the pursuit of goals andawards. Just a thought, I try to applythis myself to keep me grounded andappreciative. I don’t always succeed, but the wonderful thing I know is thatwhen I do stumble and I need sup-port I have a wonderful family and so

many wonderful friends, BotherKnights to help me. It makes me morethan bit ashamed I am not more grate-ful for this Blessing. A blessing fromour Lord we often take for granted.Just a few thoughts to consider. Maywe all be more thankful for all of ourblessings, no matter the number. Thereal blessing awaits us in heaven withour LORD, where we will want fornothing. Blessings to ALL!
