Saturday, September 12 is the Past Grand Knight/Faithful Navigator Dinner. All are welcome. Please sign up in the lounge or get in touch with me to make your reservation by September 4. September is also the month we kick-off our recruitment efforts at both Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Jerome Parishes. Let us all continue our efforts in recruiting younger people in our council. It is up to the membership to invite and welcome every eligible Catholic man to become a member of the Order. We need new members, new vision, new ideas, and renewed energy in all areas. Much of this can be found in new Knights. And, in return, new Knights will find great satisfaction in their participation in the achievement of our goals of Fraternity, Unity, Charity and Patriotism. Your participation at meetings, and our many and varied activities, are necessary for the Council to be successful. Each of you is needed to enable us to continue to be all that we can be, to meet the needs of our community. "Many hands make light work!" Know that you are welcome to do as much or as little as you can, when you can. We need volunteers in every area of the Knights of Columbus now and throughout the year. Don't be afraid to try something new. The ark was built by amateurs, and the Titanic was built by experts! It is my hope that you will have a wonderful fall season. Knight of the Month

Brother Umit Davulco

Our Knight of the month for September is Brother Umit Davulco. This Brother seems to volunteer for everything. He is a volunteer bartender, works at Bingo, cooks at the outdoor and indoor events and does all this with a smile. Umit has become a welcome sight to our council. He has the qualities of our degrees firmly

engrossed in his character. When he is working an event, he puts his all into making the event better for all who attend. He always has a kind smile to accompany what he says. Please help me congratulate Umit Davulco as our September Knight of the Month.

From the Deputy Grand Knight

Not that you could tell by the temperatures lately, but the end of summer is approaching. Our Children and Grandchildren are returning to school and vacations are ending. As we return to our “regular” schedules, and

plan for the next few months, please look at the calendar and see where you can help with council programs. September is open house and church recruiting weekends, please sign up and help Chancellor Dean with these events. Let us take time and consider what it means to each of us to be a Knight and share that meaning with just one new person and invite them to the Open House or another upcoming event. Success in recruiting new brothers only comes when you try!

Vivat Jesu, Jon Sargent - Deputy Grand Knight

Fraternal Benefits Agent

Raising Awareness about Life Insurance

Each September since 2003 has been designated as Life Insurance Awareness Month. Like most awareness-raising campaigns, Life Insurance Awareness Month was created because there is an overwhelming lack of understanding of life insurance, its uses, its benefits, and its variations among the general public. Each year, the Life Insurance Market Research Association (LIMRA) puts out the results from a recent survey, and unfortunately, the numbers they report continue to be discouraging. A recent survey found that more than 75 percent of people polled did not have a personal financial advisor, even though 68 percent of them said their opinion of the current economic conditions was somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable. In other words, a majority of those surveyed were uncomfortable with the economy and the uncertainty it brings, yet they did not seek professional assistance. Maybe they spoke with their friends and family. Maybe they hoped the instability would go away on its own. Maybe they did not know to whom to turn. If you fall into this category, please remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus, you have a full-time, professional agent you can call your own. My primary responsibility is the care and service of your family’s life insurance, retirement and long-term care needs. I’ll answer your questions because I want your decisions to be informed ones. I want to help. Another LIMRA statistic said 43 percent of people did not buy life insurance because they worry about “making the wrong decision.” Talk with me, your agent, and, afterwards, you’ll understand that the only wrong decision was not purchasing sooner to protect your family’s future.

EVENTS & ANNOUNCEMENTS Nocturnal Adoration – Blessed Sacrament Chapel (OLMC). Join us on the FIRST FRIDAY (10 PM – 6 AM) for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The Holy Hour consists of Powerful Readings, Silent and Recited prayer. The next Nocturnal Adoration is the weekend of September 4-5. Join brother Knights and their families as we prepare to meet the Lord. Many of our loyal and dedicated members have passed or are getting older. We need some help on the early morning hours. No need to make a long term commitment - choose any hour, you will be surprised and gratified. Families are encouraged to attend anytime. Additional Adoration Opportunities: OLMC: Thursdays - 8am to 6pm; St. Jerome: September 3 - 8:30 AM – 7 PM (Day Chapel).

If you would like to be an officer or a board member of the 5480 Club - please let one of the nominating members of the 5480 Club know ASAP! The nominating committee members are: Thai Nguyen, Dan Richard, Jim Healy, Bernie Gerlach and Dean Jernigan. The offices are: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, 1 x Two Year Term Board Member and 2 x Three Year Term Board Members. Elections will be held the 2nd meeting in October; interviews will start right away.

Council 5480 will support the Peninsula Agency on Aging (PAA) with packing the dry foodstuff in September. We need the most help on Monday, September 14th at 3 PM…we will need some sturdy knights and ladies to unload the truck and set up assembly line tables. On Tuesday, September 15th - military volunteers will form the bulk of the packing group; but we will need a few people at 1 PM to open the building and assist in breakdown of boxes, and closing the building. The PAA supports the independence and quality of life of Peninsula residents primarily 60 years and over by advocating, arranging, or providing vital human services. To volunteer - please contact Frank Dougherty: [email protected].

Movie Knight! Les Miserables

Movie Knight resumes in September 2015! Please join us in the lounge on September 25th at 7:30 PM to watch Les Misérables - a 2012 British epic romantic musical period drama. The film is based on the 1980 musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg and the 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo. The film stars an ensemble cast led by Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried.

It all began when the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig married Therese from Saxony-Hildburghausen on Oktober12, 1810. In honor of this wedding the royal family invited the citizens of Munich to celebrate this event on a large meadow outside the city walls. Henceforth this meadow was named the “Theresienwiese ” (or Theresa Field) in honor of the Crown Princess. The Oktoberfest became an annual event for over 200 years now. At present the Oktoberfest is imitated in many countries around the world. The Tidewater German-American Society (TGAS) of Newport News celebrates Oktoberfest’s for the past 45 years. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at the Columbian Center, 100 Columbus Way (off Nettles Drive), Newport News. Tickets are $20.00 per person and include an authentic German Meal. For further information please call SK Wilfried Wotke at (757) 877-3316.

Spirit of ’45………. We reflect back to our participation at Warwick Forest Active Retirement and Living Facility on last month in support of what many have called “The Greatest Generation”. Seventy years ago, the people of the United States received word of the end of World War II, and on that day people of the United States and around the world greeted the news of the Allies’ noble victory with joyous celebration, humility and spiritual reflection. In small part we helped pay tribute to all the remarkable citizens (including several of our own Sir Knights and Brother Knights) who bravely served our country in that time of peril as they fought fearlessly to defend our freedoms and ensure our safety while promoting liberty and democracy. No words are fully adequate to express our gratitude or to repay the debt we owe them. The courage, dedication, self-sacrifice and compassion of the World War II generation is alive today and evident in the United States Armed Forces, emblematic of the men and women currently serving or who have served with pride and distinction. We salute you! Let’s keep the spirit of ’45 alive. Thank You….
