SEPTEMBER 2015 / Volume 49 / Issue 9

Page 2: September 2015

Have you ever found out that something you thought to be true actually wasn’t true at all? For example, did you know that Napoleon Bonaparte wasn’t short like we’ve all been taught? When the conversions are done correctly, he was 5’7”, which was taller than the average Frenchman at the time! Or, did you know that you won’t get arthritis from cracking your knuckles? After multiple medical studies, there is no link after all! Or how about the statement that holding a baby bird has no effect on whether the mother will abandon it. Birds have a really poor sense of smell, so they can’t tell if a human has touched it or not!

There are a million examples of things like this – things that we thought to be true, but just simply aren’t. In many cases, we believe these “factoids” because we trusted the person that taught them to us – our parents, a family member, a teacher. So, when we find out that they aren’t true, it can throw us for a little bit of a loop, right? We’ve spent our whole lives believing something, and now we find out it was wrong.

I have a feeling that was the same way the crowd felt when they heard Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. When Jesus got up to speak what became his most famous sermon, He must have turned their world upside down! The Beatitudes, or the sayings of blessing, were the exact opposite of what everyone expected to hear.

On August 29/30, we are starting an 8-week sermon series called Flipped, in which we will focus on each of the eight Beatitudes. What unexpected truths do these inverted sayings of Jesus hold for us today? Don’t miss this exciting chance to have your life flipped right-side up by Jesus!

See you soon!

New 9am Service Launch Team“Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” ~ Acts 2:46-47

This is the story of the early Christian church in the book of Acts. It was new. It was exciting. There was energy, and there was growth! This passion for community, fellowship, and connection to Christ is a goal every church today strives to achieve. Springfield First is no different. So, we want to take the awesome energy we have in the three current worship services, and use that to launch a new worship service at 9:00am on Sunday, October 25! And WE NEED YOUR HELP! Our Launch Team for this worship service has a lot to do before this can happen, including things like transforming the Community Life Center (gym) into a viable worship space; developing teams like hospitality, tech, and music that will make the service function; and even just committing to attend. God may be prompting you to help with any or all of those things. If so, contact Pastor Mike at [email protected] or 793-9760 x122. Join the team and get fired up!  Young Adult Ministry · Fall Kick-off!Fun and fellowship… jokes and Jesus! If you are between the ages of 18 (out of high school) and, let’s say, “mid-thirties”… you are invited to the Young Adult Fall Kick-off on Sunday, September 13, to kick off the year! We’ll hang out, have lunch, and talk a little bit about the upcoming year immediately following the 10:30am service. No need to bring anything. Just show up and have fun!Childcare available upon request.

SUNDAY MORNING OPPORTUNITIESResearch has revealed that people choose a church based on several factors, one being Biblical teaching. We have several Sunday morning classes teaching from Scripture-based curriculum. Below are Sunday morning classes that we offer for YOU. We want your walk with Christ to become richer and fuller through the knowledge of His Word. DISCIPLE FAST TRACK Tuesdays, beginning September 1, at 6:30-7:45pm

Room 4 (Note change from full-length Disciple class!)If you have considered Disciple I but life was too full, this is the year to sign up! Disciple Fast Track maintains the integrity and principles of the original study, but its modifications can better meet the needs of a hectic world. Participants still receive a thorough introduction to the Bible but in almost a third less time. Fast Track is not a replacement for the original; it is simply a practical option. The course uses the same Disciple Study Manual, but the class time and course length have all been adjusted for busy lifestyles. Additional print and video materials, which are extremely easy to use, provide the tools to absorb and retain what is learned in this shortened format. Main features of Disciple Fast Track: Classes meet for a total of 24 weeks. There are 12 sessions in the Old Testament and 12 in the New Testament. Each group session lasts 75 minutes – this is half the time of traditional Disciple classes. Our new schedule will be Tuesdays, September 1 through November 17, covering the Old Testament. Reconvene on Tuesdays, January 5 through March 22 to complete the study of the New Testament.  GET ACQUAINTED WITH YOUR BIBLETuesdays, beginning September 8, at 7:00-8:00pm Room 5This 8-session study by Gary L. Ball-Kilbourne will be led by Max Webster. It is ideal for new church members and adults with little or no Bible background.

A BETH MOORE STUDY: JAMES, MERCY TRIUMPHSWednesdays, beginning September 2, at 6:30-8:30pm

Room 4 This is a 9-week study led by Sarah Rempel. James, Jesus’ own brother, started out as a skeptic. See how one glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned an unbeliever into a disciple. Once you get to know both the man and the book of James, you’ll never be the same again. James is a book with many topics – social justice, joy, hardship, faith, reversal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-mindedness, the dangers of the tongue, humility, and prayer – all of which are covered in this study. Books may be purchased online through Amazon or we will order new ones at a cost of $17.00. This class is open to all women. When you sign up in the Atrium, please indicate if you wish to get your own book or purchase one from the church. Childcare is available upon request. Contact Sarah Rempel at 671-2448 or [email protected] with any questions. INVITATION TO PSALMS: A SHORT-TERM DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDYSundays, beginning September 6, at 9:00-10:00am

This study is also great for those who are interested in the practice of prayer and worship and would like to connect prayer practice with Scripture.  RETIREMENT SMART 360˚October 20, 22, 27 and 29, at 6:00-8:30pm

The Global Leadership Summit was a huge success with God clearly present, and those in attendance are now incorporating all they learned into their ministry, business, and family. Over 140 people from Springfield First attended/served as volunteers and the impact will make a positive difference in the lives of many.

A big “thank you” to all who shared their gifts and talents to welcome so many new faces into our facility. The comments received in the evaluation forms let us know that the welcome that was extended was warmly received. Whether you worked on the grounds to make it inviting, prayed before and during the event, welcomed people in the Atrium, served food, or helped in the resource center or the tech area, with everyone working together, leaders were equipped and encouraged over the 2-day event.

The Global Leadership Summit will return again on August 11-12, 2016. Take time now to invite someone to join you next year. Until then, be looking for more information on how we will keep the Summit experience in front of us all year long.

PARENT INFORMATION

ELEMENTARY | SEPTEMBER THEME: INITIATIVEDirty jobs are a part of everyday life; somebody’s gotta do them. But how many times are we tempted to wait for someone else to take care of them? How many times do we avoid dirty jobs because we think they are too big for us to handle? There are things that just need to get done, and we need the right attitude as we approach our tasks. That’s why we’re going to focus on what it means to have initiative during the month of September.

Initiative is seeing what needs to be done and doing it.

FAMILY NIGHTOn September 30, Springfield First will be hosting a family night for parents, children, and youth of all ages! We will begin the evening with a family dinner at 5:45pm. Following dinner, entertainment will be provided by Jim Percy, Gospel Illusionist, along with character balloons and face painting. Bring the whole family to enjoy a night of community, laughter, and fun! Please RSVP to Nancy at [email protected] or 793-9760 x227.

CHRISTMAS MUSICALRehearsals for the Christmas musical, “We Three Spies,” will begin the first week in October. Anyone in grades K through 12 are invited to become part of the cast and crew. Children and youth can develop and learn skills as they prepare for a performance on December 13 at 4:00pm. For more information, please contact Nancy at [email protected] or 793-9760 x227.

PRESCHOOL · HELLO, FIRST LOOK FRIENDS!

It’s time to visit the We Care Pet Shop where we care for pets and children! The month of September will be full of dogs and frogs and

birds and mice! Oh my! Your kids are sure to have fun, but more importantly, they are sure to learn about caring and that

God cares about them.

Throughout the month, we want kids to walk away with the knowledge that “God will take care of me.” What a powerful thing

for kids to know! No matter what, God will take care of them.

We all might pay attention a little more when we realize that we aren’t just working for our parents or our bosses but we are actually working for God. God will help us with anything He asks us to do, even the dirty jobs!

Another amazing summer, another amazing time in StudentLife! We again sent students, parents, and volunteers across the country serving children, seniors, homeless, and others, and here’s the truth: lives were changed! Students came to know Jesus Christ for the first time, lives were committed to Him in a new and powerful way, and StudentLife students and volunteers were able to share the love of Jesus through serving. Again, it was an amazing summer! But with the end of the summer comes the beginning of another school year… which means a new year of StudentLife ministry, and we can’t wait!

ELEMENTARY | SEPTEMBER THEME: INITIATIVE

First FUSION Teaching Series: “Unlikely”Have you ever been challenged by something in life that you felt was impossible, but you were convinced God was calling you to it anyway? Doesn’t it seem like God operates differently than most of us? He seems to choose the most ‘unlikely’ people for His work, He shows up in the most ‘unlikely’ places, and asks us to respond in ways that are ‘unlikely’ and go against our normal response! Crazy! What it all boils down to is this: you and I are unlikely people God uses in unlikely places to respond in unlikely ways! As we begin a new school and ministry year, we’re going to journey together and ask the question: “What can God do through us, our school, our youth group, our church, our families, etc. that seems… unlikely?”

September 20: An Unlikely PersonSeptember 27: An Unlikely PlaceOctober 4: An Unlikely Response

Graduated Seniors:Another amazing group of young men and women are moving into a new chapter of their lives, and we at StudentLife couldn’t be more proud! Our prayer for each of them, whether they are going to college here or away, serving in the armed forces, or entering the workforce, is that the foundation of faith they built during their time in StudentLife will carry them through all these changes! We pray that they continue to develop their faith, falling more in love with Christ each day. As a church, let’s continue to support and invest in these individuals, and make them feel that they will always be loved and cared for by their home church, Springfield First United Methodist!

SEWING PROJECTThirteen young girls participated in our most recent sewing project on August 1. Together with grandmas, moms, one dad, and several volunteers, they enjoyed our morning of eating, sewing, and giggling. After one finger cut, several ripping out of seams and rethreading of machines, the girls were able to model their new bags for all to see. A special “thank you” goes out to those who helped with food, sewing machines, and pressing. It took many people to make this a good experience. What a blessing! We can’t wait for a new opportunity to do this again.

14 Good T id ings / SEPTEMBER 2015

Dear Springfield First Family,I am excited to become your new Director of Connections. From a very young age, I realized what a blessing giving is and have continued to follow that passion. I have been working in the non-profit sector for the last eight years fundraising, managing projects, volunteers, and events. I was raised in Broadlands, IL, a small farm community 30 miles southeast of Champaign, with a whopping population of 350 people, half of which I am related to. I graduated from Illinois State University with a major in Organizational Leadership and Human Resource Management. My husband Brian is from Ottawa, IL, and we have three girls: Kerrigan (7), Makenna (5) and Miranda (3). Kerrigan and Makenna attend Ball Elementary in Chatham and Miranda goes to University of Illinois Cox Children’s Center. We live just outside Chatham in the country where we get to enjoy nature. We love the water whether it be boating, skiing, tubing, swimming, or fishing. We also love to travel, have new experiences, and try new foods.

I am so grateful God has called me here to serve and help change lives through Jesus Christ. I look forward to getting to know each of you and helping you discover your ministry.

Faithfully yours,Chantel Corrie

Dear Church Family,We are so glad to welcome Chantel in the new position of Director of Connections. We look forward to meeting the new people she will help bring to Christ through this church, as well as the opportunities she will provide to help each of us to come closer together in the body of Christ. Please give her and her family a warm welcome as they begin this next step in their own walk of faith.
