Smith Nursery Becky Vincent Newsletter Editor & Webmaster Libbi Crowe On December 17 the Rt. Rev. Philip Duncan II will make his annual official visit to our parish for Confirmaon, Recepon and Reaffirmaon. In preparaon for this, classes start this fall for those wishing to be included in these rites. Confirmaon Confirmaon is one of the seven sacraments, the outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace. The Outline of Faith on page 860 of the Book of Common Prayer says this: Q:What is Confirmation? A:Confirmation is the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop. Q: What is required of those to be confirmed? A: It is required of those to be confirmed that they have been baptized, are sufficiently instructed in the Christian Faith, are penitent for their sins and are ready to affirm their confession of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Having done that, the Confirmaon candidates are confirmed by a bishop in the apostolic succession, by the laying on of hands and prayers. Recepon When someone has been confirmed in another denominaon by a bishop in apostolic succession (such as Roman Catholics or Lutherans), they may be Received into The Episcopal Church. This is a way of recognizing someone who has made a mature confession of faith in any other denominaon by saying, in effect, we honor your spiritual journey in another fellowship, and we welcome you into the fellowship of the Episcopal Church. Reaffirmaon Reaffirmaon is for people who have already been confirmed in the Episcopal Church. You can be presented to the bishop during the service of Confirmaon to “reaffirm” your Chrisan vows. Reaffirmaon is especially appropriate for people who sense they are at a new stage in their spiritual life and want to affirm this in ritual. That is where I think many of us are now: aer all the changes of this year, our journey in the Chrisan Life may benefit from a posive, visible acknowledgement. We need to remind ourselves that this parish, like the Church at large, carries on despite any upheavals, transions or obstacles. Issues are temporal; The Church is eternal. And, we are The Church. Let’s tell the world, each other and God that whatever the problems, we are standing firm in this lile corner of the Kingdom of God. We are in community with each other, and we are not giving that up. We are strong in our faith. Reaffirmaon provides a way for us to take stock of our religious and spiritual life, and renew our courage and determinaon to connue in it. I will parcipate in the Reaffirmaon in December. seven sacraments, the outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace. The Outline of Faith on page 860 of the Book of Common Prayer says this:
Q:What is Confirmation?
A:Confirmation is the rite in

Q: What is required of those

A: It is required of those to be

baptized, are sufficiently
instructed in the Christian
Faith, are penitent for their

their confession of Jesus Christ
as Savior and Lord.
Having done that, the Confirmaon candidates are confirmed by a bishop in the apostolic succession, by the laying on of hands and prayers.
Recepon
When someone has been confirmed in another denominaon by a bishop in apostolic succession (such as Roman Catholics or Lutherans), they may be Received into The Episcopal Church. This is a way of recognizing someone who has made a mature confession of faith in any other denominaon by saying, in effect, we honor your spiritual journey in another fellowship, and we welcome you into the fellowship of the Episcopal Church.
Reaffirmaon
Reaffirmaon is for people who have already been confirmed in the Episcopal Church. You can be presented to the bishop during the service of Confirmaon to “reaffirm” your Chrisan vows.
Reaffirmaon is especially appropriate for people who sense they are at a new stage in their spiritual life and want to affirm this in ritual.
That is where I think many of us are now: a7er all the changes of this year, our journey in the Chrisan Life may benefit from a posive, visible acknowledgement.
We need to remind ourselves that this parish, like the Church at large, carries on despite any upheavals, transions or obstacles. Issues are temporal; The Church is eternal. And, we are The Church.
Let’s tell the world, each other and God that whatever the problems, we are standing firm in this li;le corner of the Kingdom of God. We are in community with each other, and we are not giving that up. We are strong in our faith.
Reaffirmaon provides a way for us to take stock of our religious and spiritual life, and renew our courage and determinaon to connue in it.

Pot Luck Brunch
Let’s all get together! For the rest of 2014, when it’s the first Sunday of the month we
will have ONE SERVICE AT 9:30 A.M
September 7.
Immediately a7er the service, we will have
a Pot Luck brunch! This month’s theme is
your favorite Game Day brunch!
Remember, on the first Sunday of each month, we will not have SML, nor coffee hour (8th Sacrament). Also, during the service the ushers, acolyte, LEM and so on will be both “early” and “late” service
regulars. We are really mixing it up! Be sure
you are there to enjoy it!
St. Augusne’s will be holding its annual fish fry in conjuncon with a community yard sale this year. The date for the event is September 27 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Almost 40 booths are already spoken for and the Fire Department has agreed to provide a Fire Truck for the kids to explore. There will be bargains to be had by all from a combinaon of vendors, arsts, and purveyors of second hand goods.
Allison Hollinger is organizing the yard sale acvity, while Tony Thompson and Eric Straight are planning the food and refreshments as a fund raiser for St.
Augusne’s. If you want to help with setup, cleanup, or manning our parish’s booth, please let Eric and Tony know right away.
Make sure you mark your calendars! Whether you want to sell, shop, enjoy the food and fellowship, or volunteer some me to help a good cause, you should plan to be there. If there are any quesons, they can be referred to Tony ([email protected]), Eric ([email protected]) or, if you would like to reserve a booth, Allison ([email protected]).

On October 25, 2014 we will celebrate our 30th Anniversary. It's amazing to think we have been serving God and the community for 30 years.
Do you know anyone who has interesng stories about St. Augusne's? Please let Ginny Brown or Brenda Khan know if you have stories, or names of people to invite, and if you have any pictures or items that relate to the history of St. Augusne's.
We want to commemorate this anniversary with a memorable get-together with old friends and new. With your help, we can make this a wonderfully fun occasion. We need people who are willing to organize, plan and setup for this important funcon. It would be great if we could get some form of entertainment, also. Please call Brenda and say you will help!

New Hope Home Dinner
SML in September
The Wired Word
The Wired Word is a curriculum for adults which discusses a current event in a biblical context each week. Each session has a Big Question to provide a framework for the discussion on some recent news item. Included is “Confronting the News with Scripture” to help us see how we can apply Scripture passages to what is happening in
the world. Each session includes discussion, exploration and a Closing Prayer.
We are having volunteers from the parish lead each week. You can come participate, you can lead, you can just listen.
Either way, you will be a welcome addition. Please join us!
September 30 is our next outreach dinner for the men at New Hope Home. Those who have cooked and served for these dinners will tell you it is uplifting, fulfilling and lots of fun.
We will make red beans and rice, slaw and cake for dessert. The pantry already has lots of red beans and rice, so we will need donations to buy sausage, cabbage, onions, and vinegar. We will also need cakes for up
to 50 people, so if you have a favorite recipe, we would welcome your efforts!
We will start the preparations the Sunday and Monday, do the final cooking Tuesday at 1, and serve promptly at 5:30 p. m at the New Hope Home.
For more information, contact Jen Kentgen, Libbi Crowe, or Jackye Jensen.
Do you enjoy being outdoors? Do you like being with friends? Then join us every first Saturday of the month (weather permitting of course) to dig a little, plant a little, and share in fellowship working together to make St. Augustine's garden grow. Bring your hat, a pair of garden gloves, and some water. We are planning to work towards
beautifying the All Soul's Garden and other natural areas around our church every month starting on September 6, 2014 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. If you have any questions, contact Jennifer Kentgen at [email protected] and (850) 630-7009; or Libbi Crowe

Thank you for the support you continue to provide to the requests for special items as well as for the food items that you give so generously to the food pantry. All of the items are given to local people who are in real need.
For the months of September and October we are asking for paper goods to supplement the requests from the food pantry. Bathroom tissue, paper towels and face tissues are particularly needed. If you are able to give extra donations of peanut butter and jelly, these have been requested by Caring and Sharing. They
endeavor to provide both in the food parcels they distribute at Thanksgiving.
A number of stores are also reducing prices on swimwear as the end of the summer draws near. This is a good time to stock up on suits for the children who will attend Camp Happy Sands next year. Swimwear to fit 7 to 12 year olds, boys and girls is what is required as well as bath towels.
“Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.’ John Wesley.

Around the Parish & Diocese
Happening September 29-31
Happening is scheduled September 29-31 in Memphis, TN, in partnership with the Diocese of West Tennessee. Happening is a renewal weekend held twice annually for Episcopal youth in grades 10-12. The weekend provides teens with a way to explore their spirituality while living and learning with others their age who want to share the faith they've found in Jesus Christ. And it’s a ton of fun! The cost for the weekend is $70, transportation is provided and financial assistance is always available. Please contact James Lawrence, Diocesan Youth Coordinator at [email protected] or call (251) 616-2162 if you have any questions or to register.
Women of Vision
The annual Women of Vision Retreat is scheduled for September 1-3 at Beckwith Camp and Retreat Center. The theme is Empowering Women”. This retreat is an opportunity for women to be empowered for ministry in all areas of their lives. The sessions are led by women who have participated in these retreats previously and will teach skills and tools for establishing a vision for their ministry in their lives and in the church. The price for the weekend includes lodging and all meals: $162.00 (double occupancy); $208.00 (single occupancy). If you have any question, please contact Amanda Smith (251) 223-1099 or Andrea Shilston (251) 928-2376.
Cursillo
CURSILLO 2014 – the next Cursillo is #153 September 25 – 28, at Beckwith Camp and Retreat Center.
Caring and Sharing 2014
Another year has passed and the time for Caring and Sharing will soon be upon us. Caring and Sharing of South Santa Rosa County is beginning preparations for its
Thanksgiving and Christmas distributions. St. Augustine’s Ann Thompson has once again been elected President of the organization and many other members of our church continue to be essential volunteers and Board Members.
Caring and Sharing assistance includes food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Through our Giving Tree Program at Christmas, children 12 and under are provided gifts and children 13 through 18 (while still attending high school) receive gift certificates. Vouchers will be provided at the Thanksgiving distribution for used clothing and linens from Interfaith Ministries on highway 98. If you are a potential client, Registration is a must!
The 2014 dates to remember for Caring and Sharing:
October 11 -12 (2:00–4:30 PM), October 13 (5:00–8:00 PM). Interviews will be held at Liberty Church, 6006 Gulf Breeze Parkway, Gulf Breeze FL.
November 21-23 Distribution of food
December 19-21 Distribution of food and gifts .
Talk to Ann Thompson or virtually any other long time member of St. Augustine’s about the rewards of volunteering and the benefit provided to hundreds of families in South Santa Rosa County ([email protected]).

Jennifer Kentgen, Liza Knapp, Jackye Jensen and Libbi
Crowe gathered for a quiet day retreat on August 16
before Jennifer was admitted to the Order of the
Daughters of the King on August 17. The chapter hopes to
plan a quiet day for the Fall to which all will be invited.
Othella Wright is entering data into
“the Green Book” as the official
parish register is often called. Ginny
Brown and Brenda Khan did
research into old bulletins, filed
documents, newsletters and “the
red book” (record of services held)
to gather data. Othella volunteered
to enter and index what was found.
Thank you Othella!
Members of St. Augustine’s gathered at a recent Thurs-
days in the Park. Pictured are Steve Clark, Pete Peter-
zen, Mary Peterzen, Janet Wright, Peter Wright, Brenda
Khan and Charleen Clark. Mark and Libbi Crowe were
there, too.
