Did you know that there are nearly 10 miles of walking trails throughout the

Forest Heights community? These trails are maintained by the homeowners

association and while our maintenance staff (Richard Metzger and Juan

Guerrero) do an excellent job of keeping the trails safe and clean, their daily

maintenance schedule does not afford them the time to walk the trail system

each day.

This is where you come in.

If you walk the trails on a regular basis and notice any kind of maintenance

issue, be it a diseased tree, a fallen limb, overgrown shrubs or debris on the

trails or in the common areas, we need to hear from you. To aid in the report-

ing of trail maintenance issues, we’ve created this online trail maintenance

report form (located on the HOA website > Committees > Go Green > Trail

Maintenance). Your reports will greatly assist our crew in their ongoing efforts

to keep our trails safe and enjoyable for all who enjoy this wonderful feature

of the community.

Thank you in advance for keeping an eye out for trail issues!

New and exciting changes coming to the

FHHOA newsletter

The Forest Heights HOA will be making some new and exciting changes to this

newsletter starting in January 2014. Instead of a monthly newsletter, we will be

switching to a quarterly publication that will include: in-depth articles on issues

that impact the community, committee updates, financials and compliance

related information. To ensure that our homeowners are receiving the most up-

to-date information from the HOA, we will continue to send email communica-

tions on a bi-monthly (or as needed) basis. These emails will be brief in nature

and will cover the latest news “at-a-glance”. As always, the HOA’s website is

your best source for all the news, information and resources you need in order

to be an informed member of the Forest Heights community. Check us out!

Over the past 3 years, West Multnomah Soil and Water

Conservation District (WMSWCD) has collaborated

with the Go Green committee and Forest Heights staff

to remove invasives and plant natives along our stream

banks and trail system. We are excited to announce

that we will continue our restoration efforts in partner-

ship with WMSWCD via an $18,000 grant awarded

from the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.

This grant will help Forest Heights develop a storm

water management plan, identify areas of potential

improvement, and provide educational opportunities

for residents on how to

help manage erosion/

water issues on their

home sites. Workshops

will be held to help residents reduce time and money

spent maintaining their landscape through implement-

ing approaches that will also manage storm water run-

off from roads, parking lots, roofs, and yards. Holisti-

cally tackling both our natural lowlands and our devel-

oped uplands will benefit everyone living in (and down-

stream of) Forest Heights by decreasing stream bank

erosion and improving water quality along the five

creeks in Forest Heights, which ultimately drain to the

Tualatin River.

The project as a whole is designed to be a demonstra-

tion project for the entire West Hills area. Other part-

ners and collaborators include Clean Water Services

(Washington County), Tualatin River Watershed Coun-

cil, Bureau of Environmental Services (City of Port-

land), and the Federal Natural Resource Conservation

Service. The lead consultant on the project is Green

Girl Solutions who has worked on other projects such

as the City of Bend Stormwater Demonstration Pro-

jects.

Planning will begin in September, with events for

homeowners scheduled for Spring 2014. Keep watch-

ing for more updates and schedules.

With school starting this week, we want to remind all

Forest Heights residents to be cognizant of additional

pedestrian foot traffic in the neighborhood, and please

be sure to observe the following traffic laws when out on

the roads with school buses:

Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to

stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow

down and prepare to stop their vehicles.

Red flashing lights and extended stop arm indicate

that the bus has stopped and that children are getting on

or off the bus. Motorists must stop their cars and wait

until the red flashing lights are turned off, the stop arm is

withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they start

driving again.

When driving in school zones, watch out for young

people who may be thinking about getting to school, but

may not be thinking about getting there safely.

Slow down. Watch for children walking in the street,

especially where there are no sidewalks. Watch for

children playing and gathering near bus stops.

Be alert and ready to stop. Children arriving late for the

bus may dart into the street without looking for traffic.

Help Us Create a Net Team in Forest Heights

In the event of a citywide or regional emer-

gency such as a severe winter storm, flood or

major earthquake, households need to be pre-

pared to be on their own for at least a week.

Neighborhoods need to be prepared

for self-sufficiency, too. Volunteer neighbor-

hood rescuers will likely be first on-the-scene

when firefighters and police are slowed by

impassable streets or overwhelmed by calls

for help.

Neighborhood Emergency Teams (NETs)

provide emergency disaster assistance

within their own neighborhoods and are

trained to save lives and property until

professional responders can arrive. These

volunteers are specially trained to help

others without putting themselves in harm’s

way. NET members are:

• Prepared to be self-sufficient for one

week during any emergency

• Able to provide emergency assistance

to their family and immediate neighbors

• Able to work within an emergency

response team to save lives and property

in their neighborhood and guide untrained

volunteers who want to help others during

a disaster

A foundling, an old book of

dark fairy tales, a secret

garden, an aristocratic

family, a love denied, and a mys-

tery. The Forgotten Garden is a

captivating, atmospheric and

compulsively readable story of

the past, secrets, family and

memory from the international

best-selling author Kate Morton.

Cassandra is lost, alone and grieving. Her much loved

grandmother, Nell, has just died and Cassandra, her life

already shaken by a tragic accident ten years ago, feels

like she has lost everything dear to her. But an unex-

pected and mysterious bequest from Nell turns her life

upside down and ends up challenging everything she

thought she knew about herself and her family.

O ver the past years, determining the best

improvement for the east side of Mill Pond

Park has been a challenge for the Forest

Heights community. After multiple surveys of the

homeowners, task force studies and the work of

consultants, the Forest Heights Homeowners

Association Board of Directors has set the direction

for improvement to the area most commonly known

as Tract R.

The primary goal of the Tract R/Mill Pond Park

improvement project is to clean up and transform

the wild, unmaintained land into usable space for all

ages to enjoy, with the additional priority of developing

the space as sustainably as possible. With the input

of multiple professionals, the parcel of land to be im-

proved in Mill Pond Park will include features such

as soil remediation, eco-lawn, meadowscaping and

native filter strip plantings.

It is the hope that the project will showcase the possi-

bilities of development while providing homeowners a

chance to witness sustainable solutions in action while

enjoying the new functionality that this space will pro-

vide, including a lawn amphitheater that is being

added as part of the grading plan, providing both a

benefit to stormwater runoff and an additional venue

for entertainment and events.

The tentative project schedule is as follows:

September 3—September 6

Remove maintenance shed, relocate restrooms

to area by playground, tree removal

September 9—September 30

Regrading and soil remediation

October 1—October 31

Replanting & landscape installation
